  • Construction will soon begin on the Interstate 64 Gap Segment A Widening Project. The first of three widening projects, Segment A will add a third lane on I-64 eastbound and westbound between mile markers 204.9 to 215.6. In addition to alleviating congestion, this 10.7 mile widening project will also include pavement rehabilitation and additional overhead signage.
During a groundbreaking ceremony on November 14, VDOT Commissioner Stephen Brich along with Governor Glenn Youngkin, Secretary of Transportation Sheppard 'Shepp' Miller III, Congressman Rob Wittman Delegate Barry Knight, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Virginia Division Administrator Thomas Nelson, and Vice Chair of Central Virginia Transportation Authority (CVTA) John Hodges spoke about the benefits of the widening project - a safe and efficient connection between Richmond and Hampton Roads.
In total, the I-64 Gap Segment A Widening project and the future Segment B and C widening projects will add an additional travel lane on I-64 in each direction from mile marker 204.9 in New Kent County to 233.3 in James City County.
