    My ex-husband used to clear fence rows for farmers and bring home the wood from trees he cut. He stacked them very similar to how Darrell does it. Except he put 4 long pieces of rebar (two at each end) stuck in the ground to keep it steady. That old wood kept our house warm during the "Great Blizzard of 77" that blew through our town and kept power off for 3 days.

    Very helpful. I just bought a Cubic Grizzly Wood Stove for my tiny house and have to think through storing wood. I've been looking at different methods. So, this is timely for me. I have an extra step though . . . I have to chop wood down to 6 1/2" lengths! I haven't installed the stove yet, and may not since I am a renter. I don't have wood yet, either. Short story: I turned an out building 16' x 18' into a tiny home out in the country on the property where my son lives/rents. I have a Mr. Buddy and lots of propane to use in case the electrical grid goes down (plus I have some solar), but I like knowing I have the start of a wood-stove back-up plan, if needed. I am a single, late bloomer like you, Kaye, probably older, and can relate to you on several levels. Love your show. Keep them coming. I'm in awe of all the work you've done to move to Tennessee and start your homestead. You must fall into bed dog-tired most nights! Yet you keep smiling and keep going. You are an encouragement to me!

    Kaye! Why nit use the damaged tarp to cover the wood instead of that sheet metal just fold the cut part underneath then just stack a few pieces of wood onto to hold it down. I just put my wood in my garage there always spaces to stack them. I don’t have to go out in the bad weather.

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  Před 2 lety +1

      I did that last winter and got lots of comments not to put it in my garage because of spiders, termites, snakes and mice....? I do have some in my shop.

  • @lauriesmith7517
    @lauriesmith7517 Před 2 lety +1

    What about the bugs in the firewood infesting the wooden deck? They also can just tunnel right over it and the foundation and into the house. Pressure treated wood is less likely, but not termite-proof.

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  Před 2 lety

      Hm. Idk. I believe the deck is pressure treated wood.

    • @darrellluck7230
      @darrellluck7230 Před 2 lety +1

      The deck is pressure treated wood and the bugs in the firewood are soon to get frozen and then burned. It's not good to keep firewood stacked close to the house year-round, but putting it there just for the heating season will not cause any problems.

  • @juditharsenault2131

    Unfortunately, you should stack your wood at least 30 feet from your house to avoids pests in your house. Carpenter ants and other wood boring insects can be attracted to your firewood. It's a bummer for me because then I have to trudge out through the snow with a sled to retrieve my firewood. It's good exercise and keeps me tough, though. It was -30 F last winter and it was rough but I bundled up. I store a little bit on my covered porch only after it gets really cold. Otherwise I go out to the woodpile to retrieve it.

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  Před rokem

      That's what I had planned to do in '21 when I had a full-time helper that summer, build a nice big firewood shelter over by the shop, but didn't happen, and this deck was just sitting here. I agree with you, though!

    • @juditharsenault2131
      @juditharsenault2131 Před rokem

      @@Latebloomershow I wanted to build a firewood shelter but didn't want to spend the money. Instead I used treated old decent 8' long 2x4s that my son had gotten when he helped remove a deck. I laid them on the ground 12 inches apart after levelling the ground with some elbow grease, a pick axe and a shovel. I cross stacked both ends of my 8 foot long piles and stacked the wood with the bark side up about 5 feet high. By the way, I put it 75 feet from my house. I got scrap roofing metal from our local dump to cover it after it started to snow but left it uncovered until then. I left 3 feet between stacks for air circulation. It was a tremendous amount of work for me but I'm a retired RN so I had the time. The mosquitoes, black flies and no see ums ate me alive practically. It was rough and unglamorous. But it was good for my character- to do something hard. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
      I just got a load of firewood a week ago and will start stacking today. The cross stacking on the ends takes the longest because you want a stable pile so your cross stack has to be level so your pile doesn't fall over.
