  • P-47D at the Hahnweide Oldtimer-Meeting 2019, flown by Jon Gowdy. Aircraft is powered by a Pratt & Whitney R2800 18cyl. Radial engine with over 2500hp.
    Engine Startup went a little smoky. It`s a common thing for radial engines to collect some oil in the lower cylinders. That gets burned on engine start.
    The B-47 Thunderbolt os one of the biggest and heaviest fighters of WWII with very strong armament.

    You might think that a big, heavy plane would be useless against the fast, nimble Japanese planes, but this thing was incredibly fast at high altitudes; the weight and hefty design allowed for great energy retention and amazing dive chsracteristics. The 8 .50 calibre machine guns also helped. Pilots would climb to high altitudes, dive onto an enemy plane at high speed, then zoom away. Rinse and repeat.
    "Boom and Zoom" tactics.

      That second stage turbocharger made the P47N a very lively performer at the B29's altitude. You bring those single stage supercharged Franks, Georges or Jacks up there and that big Jug is going to make them look crippled before they're even hit.

      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper Před 6 měsíci

      @@davegeisler7802 The turbo was bypassed in this particular aircraft, actually most all P-47's flying today have had their turbos bypassed, some have been removed entirely and lead ballast takes its place. The R2800 still provides good power for the altitudes seen by civilians and the turbo is unnecessary. Only a handful of owners who want everything to be original have kept the turbos functional, the rest just use the wastegate port to dump all of the exhaust instead of sending it to a turbo. Easy way to tell is by looking to see any smoke coming from in front of the tailwheel at startup, or any exhaust stains in that area. If you see none, the turbo isn't being used. Easier maintenance, cheaper, and less likely to cause a total airframe loss if you get an intake fire on startup.

    Nellie B. My idea of a crowd pleaser. I've always liked that chrome cover on the hub of the Hamilton Standard 13' 3' prop. Or as I call it the "Big Hammy". You can tell this is an experienced 47 pilot, when he pulled the gear handle up the Jug didn't wonder around. Fun fact: the rear section of the canopy, from the Tempest. Early R-2800, it's got a "Dog nose". Big beast! Looks so nimble in the air. BEAUTIFUL! Great vid!

      Not really besides the name... It was an escort fighter later also used as a ground attack aircraft. I'd imagine something more along the lines of an F-4 or F-15E would be a better fit.

      Yeah but the A-10 is a ground attack aircraft and the F-15 not so much. I guess it would be a combination

      @@alexenns3203 A P-47 was not designed as a ground attack aircraft. It was an escort fighter later pressed into the ground attack role much like P-51s and pretty much every other Allied fighter later in the war. Pretty much exactly what an F-15/F-15E is. Both became multirole fighters that were/are still at the top of the curve as far as top fighter aircraft of their eras. A-10s are not and were never intended for anything like that and have never been anywhere close to the performance (again because they're not intended to be) of any contemporary fighters. I'd imagine the reputation for "toughness" and the fact that they were made by the same company is why they chose to reuse the name.
