Great discussion! I think in both “Vizhiyil Vizhundu” & “ Punjai Undu” there is a nice sketch in the movie about the raga. In the former, the song follows Aarohanam/Avarohanam and brief Swaras and in the latter the dialogue after the song exemplifies the raga. “Neeye Unakku” is indeed a classic in this raga!

Ha ha ! I like the way you pull each others legs ... You guys make it look very easy but have such a deep knowledge ! So many songs I spent 2 hours after this to find out what you guys are talking about !
To summarise what I learnt - Minor scale in G is karaharapriya. (S R₂ G₂ M₁ P D₂ N₂ Ṡ) So if you drop R2 and D2 you get Shudha Danyasi . It is also called udayaravichandrika ( of Dikshithar school) though some heavy theory is there behind the subtle difference ...which is beyond me . You get to this by dropping Ri and Dha from Natabhiaravi and Thodi also but it is called subset or janya of Karaharapriya ... why ? ..No idea. And if you don't drop the Ri and dha when coming down , it is Abheri .
