    Working on a ship I always have a 3 months break from drum kit - then 3 months at home on drum.., but I do hit the practice pad from time to time on ship. After I come back home I always think I lost so much, feeling not being able to keep up higher tempos - then in couple of days on drum kit I feel refreshed and that everything is 2 times more easy than it was before the contract on ship. Also, other techniques start to come more easy - because it is more easy to "erase" old muscle memory habbits that I repeated on daily basis while being at home. Great vid btw - thanks!

    You have to know something about mecanics of your brain. Even if you don't practice, while sleeping, your brain still work. Try hard something, if you don't get it, wait one or two days, and your brain will make the job for you. At my start of playing drum, I learned a lot on how my brain works, on my muscular memory, and other stuff like that. So I learnt that if you have a problem to understand a math formular, or anything else, even in drumming, while sleeping, your brain will search a way to solve that problem. I'm sure that's what happened to you, maybe I'm wrong, but it's too similar with all those times that works with me. In any case, I'm really happy for you, and thx a lot for sharing good solutions to increase our double bass technics, as always you're a really kind person dude. Take care, hope to see you in France a day

  • @toolband1992
    @toolband1992 Před 4 lety

    Amazing. So tight and controlled for the song. Singles is my preferred technique for feel and sound but heel-toe has made achieving really high tempo's not only 'easier' but it takes less stamina and from what I have heard it's quicker and more efficient with the time spent learning it. Like DD he floats beautifully between heel-toe and singles for feet; and fingers and push-pull for hands. Incredible stuff. Thanks, man. :)

    • @KaiOwensDrums
      @KaiOwensDrums Před 4 lety

      I agree mostly but doubles take much more physical effort. You need tighter springs and use the small shin muscles which take a very long time to build. Singles relies on the pedal swing which is easy to continue. This is just based off of many drummers i know who use singles and myself who uses doubles! But I’d love to hear what you think!

    • @toolband1992
      @toolband1992 Před 4 lety

      @@KaiOwensDrums. Ohh, ok. You're more in the technical know-how than me. I'm just going by what I've heard from pro drummers and the pro's and cons for 'them' as conversely, it differs from person to person, I guess.
      I think most would agree that John Longstreth was one of the first in Extreme Metal to use heel-to or popularise it (?), per say.
      There is a plethora of techniques and information out there and I think it's like read music and not: sure you can get far by ear alone but you're not gonna get a jazz gig for lunch or money if you can't sight read.
      Moreover, maybe not great analogy but basically use what works for you and/or makes things the easiest to achieve your goal(s). I respect big time, either technique, for people to play anything over 250bpm as no easy task.
      Just wanna get back to gigs. Wonder if we'll get any club gigs this year. I've gone through every case scenario in my head and cannot see it happening whilst obeying social distancing.
      We're only at the very beginning of this and nobody knows with any certainty what's gonna happen. Without a vaccine things are gonna be VERY slow to go back to some resemblance of normality - it won't be a normal we've ever seen and will be pervasive and force us into a future and I don't think relatable to how we were prior covid-19.
      Anyway, I hope everyone stays safe and comes out of this strong: because we are a f***ing strong community and I know we can come together as a global community with resilience and passion and rise again. Peace out. :)

  • @edrumsense
    @edrumsense Před 4 lety +5

    Fun fact. Race horses are forced to exercise every day without stop until they hit 1 year old, if they don't do that the horse starts to loose muscle mass. After 1 year old the owners start to shorten the exercise and adding resting days progressively and proportional to the age. If they don't do that the muscle mass have no time to regenerate, and thus, will loose muscle mass. That happens to us humans at around 27 - 30 years old. Maybe not a 2 month rests, but you have to consider stop practicing at least a few days per week and some longer periods per month. You need to find your sweet spot, because every body is different.

    It is well known in sports that the rest between sessions of tough physical exercise can be divided into two phases. The first phase deals with bringing the body back to the capacity it had before the session. The second phase brings the body to a capacity higher than it was before. But in order to enter this the second phase one must rest longer than people think. So taking longer breaks now and then is not bad at all if one wants to develop the physical capacity as much as possible.

    Dude ! I beg to differ, i was in very great shape especially with my hips before the lockdown, could pull out powerfull mid tempos and fast tempos up to 240/250 bpm, 2 months later without practicing during the whole break… hum....Well ...
    Let's say i was able to go back behind the kit.. and now 3 weeks from the end of the lockdown i am just barely getting back all the controll i had with heavy daily practice because i lost almost everything..
    I'd say be aware it will be different with everyone, getting rest is a good thing, but at least keep playing/doing the motions you're used to on the floor cause it can all go by the window faster than a blink of an eye !! .
