    Auto racks are notorious for going into emergency, I have seen more than I can count go into emergency at much higher speeds and have never seen the cars come through the doors like this. I am thinking whoever loaded the cars did something wrong or missed a step. Very good catch young man, and prepare to go viral because Millenniumforce just tagged your video!

    Can you see the cars dipping down toward the camera. This is from low ballast before the diamond (should have added more ballast)
    and the diamonds have no flex. Diamonds are not supposed to be tightened down to the max as tight as they can be. This causes
    extreme wheel stress and rail wear. All the diamonds at Plant City are tightened to the extreme. That's why when trains pass thru here
    (AMTRAK) sound is so loud. Yes, there are buildings amplifying the sound but it should not be this loud. If you look at the rail heads here
    there flattened out. That's proof. This is basic old school track maintenance not being followed. That little mishap costs csx a pretty penny.
    Retired Track Inspector for hire.

      Can anyone help with this question? How could this train stop so fast. There are many loaded auto racks. Though I don't know if that means the rest of the trailers are likely loaded or not? I might think they wouldn't want to pull many empty ones but maybe they would. Any idea?

    I used to work for a company unloading autoracks. We drove the cars off the autoracks for them to be loaded onto semi trucks heading out to the dealers. The only thing they do to secure the cars inside is set the parking brake and chock the wheels on each car tire(4x per car). On the inside of the autoracks are wheel chocks that lock into the floor so they don't move but the force of an emergency will cause them to bust. They are only made of plastic! Not sure why they don't use steel instead.

    when i hired in 1974 ; the cars still had REAL frames to tie down with REAL chains....there was never that much damage with this easy of a stop.....by the 80's the cars were getting smaller/junkier/lighter so they went to plastic chocks (the frames were no longer strong enough to hold) some still have a belt that go around the tire (those were better) some of the rail cars might have defective end of car cushions...that can cause serious damage in a minor stop..hopefully they got the air hose recoupled and they were on there way....claims agents will have to write some more fat checks...

      I worked for the railroad when I was younger and I know the sound of the wheels hitting the joints in the track to know about what speed he is going and he was doing 35 to 40 mph.
      I rode the back of many trains at many speeds to learn and study the sounds and speeds. Back in the 80's it was required in New Jersey to take a test to the knowledge of the speed of trains. I passed that test.

    So I've heard a million times in my life that a big freight train can take a mile or more to stop. But every time I see a video on youtube of a train going into emergency, it stops in about 2 car lengths! What is the story?

      Under normal braking, it takes a train over a mile to stop. Railroad supervisors always warn engineers not to throw a train into emergency at any cost. Sending a train into emergency stops the train faster than necessary. Such abrupt stops lead to cars being crushed, heated brakes that weld themselves to the wheels of the cars, and/or damaged cargo. There was enough energy being exerted from the pounding over the diamond that it was enough to separate a hose. If the vehicles were properly secured after being loaded, they would not have shifted.

    • @cdavid8139
      @cdavid8139 Před 6 lety +1

      A heavy train (14,000 tons for example) doing 60mph may indeed take a mile to stop. And railfans love to throw the mile (or two or three) mile figure out there. Indeed however most trains are not 14,000 tons doing 60 mph. So while it does take considerable distance to stop at times, they often will stop far sooner than a mile.

      They are, but the restraints can only take so much force. Plus, if you have a vehicle come loose at the rear end of a rack, the vehicle restraints on the other autos on that rack have to contend with both the braking forces plus vehicles rolling or sliding into them from behind.

    • @mattmoschkau2831
      @mattmoschkau2831 Před 5 lety

      It’s caused when vehicles are improperly secured. They are suppose to be secured from frame mount locations to tie downs in the rail car floor. This prevents any movement of the vehicles, but lazy people will latch onto suspension or axle components, this allows the vehicles to move which can and does snap the tie down chains and then vehicles go flying.
      Probably a new guy or just a lazy idiot.

You can scan all types of frequencies other than just railroad such as air traffic, fire and police, ham frequencies, GMRS and FRS and so on. Decent ones are not cheap, but you can get them for less than $100 easily. They're worth that.

    • @whiteknightcat
      @whiteknightcat Před 6 lety

      During normal braking, all you should hear is the brake shoes on the wheels. When a train goes into emergency, all the trainline air is released quite loudly, followed by the application of the brakes from the point of the air hose separation out both directions along the train. If the emergency brake is initiated by the engineer, the braking propagates from the head end towards the rear.

    The two auto racks involved look to be CP 540181 and SOO 519020 which is the white CP car immediately behind it. Look down in the comments for additional info. It you get to look inside an auto rack there are chains, hooks, and clamps to secure the vehicles against movement during transit. They should not come loose even in emergency--possibly a derailment. That is the way they are designed. Most auto racks have a stencil to return the car to a certain loading point as the tie downs have been adjusted for those vehicles so that loading and securing them can be done in as little time as possible. auto rack car distribution is very complex and not determined by stenciling on the car sides. The pool is pretty much nation-wide and racks are sent from the unloading point to the closest loader that needs equipment. For example an auto rack moving from Louisville to Jacksonville, when unloaded, is very seldom going back to Louisville empty. It will instead be sent to the nearest point that requires a car for loading. Tie down devices inside the car move.

      +Iowarail Hi there, just curious, does CSX buy the cars and ship them as a part of their business? Or do you mean they buy any cars that have been damaged in transport?

    • @royreynolds108
      @royreynolds108 Před 7 lety +1

      Securing the load is not the responsibility of the shipping company but the one doing the shipping, therefore CSX is not responsible for strapping them down and probably would not have moved the cars from the loading area if it had been known that the automobiles were not tied down correctly. That is a requirement for shipment. The shipper is supposed to load, tie down the goods, close, lock the doors, apply seals, then notify the carrier the cars (railroad) are ready for transport so the railroad would not be in a position to inspect the condition of the load prior to moving the auto racks. Securing the load applies to ANY load on or in a rail car(truck too for that matter). Add barges to the list as well as ships.

    that was odd because the mechanic have fixed it before it went on the train because they are so post too look at all the cars before they took off. `

      RetroGuy76 you just explained how a 18 wheeler truck works. without the sand bit of course. they use air. everything is air because hydraulic fluid would get hot and boil under the conditions they are put under.
