The Coyote (Prolupus latrans) is a species of jackal native to North America, it is also known as the american jackal or silver jackal, it is one of the two jackal species included within the genus Prolupus, the other is the Golden Jackal (Prolupus aureus), members of the Prolupus genus are called laurasian jackals or holarctic jackals.

Where did you get this information. I typed in "is a coyote a type of jackal" and it proved your whole comment is false information.

@user-kw3fk8pf5d, the coyote is a jackal, it is one of five extant dog species called a jackal, the others being the Short-Eared Jackal (Atelocynus microtis), the Side-Striped Jackal (Lupulella adusta), the Black-Backed Jackal (Lupulella mesomelas), and the Golden Jackal (Prolupus aureus), surprisingly, the golden jackal is the closest living relative of the coyote, both species belong to the genus Prolupus, where its members are known as "laurasian jackals" or "holarctic jackals" and its type species is designated to be the golden jackal, the coyote is also known as the american jackal or silver jackal, therefore it is a jackal.

@@indyreno2933 For one thing no one in america calls them or refers to them as anything other than coyotes. Not on person you meet will point out a american jackal or a sliver jackal. NO ONE! The coyote split off from it closest cousin species 800,000 years ago to become it's own species. Jackals live in Africa and Asia. Jackals and Coyotes are 2 seperate species.

@user-kw3fk8pf5d, there are five extant species of dog known as jackals: the Short-Eared Jackal (Atelocynus microtis), the Side-Striped Jackal (Lupulella adusta), the Black-Backed Jackal (Lupulella mesomelas), the Golden Jackal (Prolupus aureus), and the Coyote (Prolupus latrans), the former and latter are the jackal species native to the new world.
