Malaysia | Overnight Jungle Train & Perhentian Island 4-Day Trip

- Riding Malaysia’s famous Jungle Train to end up in 5-star luxury getaway at Bubu Villas on Perhentian Island is one of the most adventurous and unique long weekend trips I’ve ever taken here in Malaysia. This is the first domestic trip I'm doing for my weekly radio show WHAT A TRIP! on Lite FM, Fridays during the 6pm drive time hour with my buddy Phat Fabes, and it was truly a trip!
I have a fun 4-day itinerary to share that starts with the scenic KTMB route officially known as the East Coast Railway Line that travels from Johor Bahru, all the way up north to Tumpat near the Thailand border on the east coast but we’ll be hopping off at Tanah Merah for our island holiday:
- No matter where you’re based, you’ll need to start in Gemas at 1am, which is easier for those of us starting in KL or JB for sure! Don’t plan to sleep as usual, take catnaps when you can because there are so many small children on board, it was not possible to sleep in my case.
- From there, the team at Bubu Villas collected me at Tanah Merah Station and we drove just over an hour to the Kuala Besut Jetty- Next is a 30 minute ferry ride to the main jetty on Perhentian Island and a short walk along Long Beach to Bubu Villas
- There is every budget of accommodation available on Perhentian Island but I opted for the #1 luxury property on the island, Bubu Villas -- and they took care of me from the train station pickup to the airport drop! It’s perfect for solo travellers and romantic getaways more than kid-friendly families in my opinion. I stayed on a quiet stretch of white sandy beach, had my own private garden and outdoor shower, just like in villas in Bali. And it had nightly happy hour with a free cocktail and canapés for guests.
The Perhentian Islands (pronounced Perhen-TEE-AHN) lie approximately 10 nautical miles (19 km) off the coast of northeastern Malaysia in the state of Terengganu, approximately 40 miles (64 km) south of the Thai border.
MY TOP 3 TIPS:
1) Don’t miss the hidden gem local bar called Joe’s Perhentian. It’s super local and tucked into the jungle a bit so ask someone at the hotel how to get there. We were the only foreigners the first night and ended up dancing and laughing til 2am. / joes_perhentian
2) Sleep when you can and take plenty of snacks and drinks for the train journey. There is nothing available at Gemas station or on the train until morning!
3) Depart for home on a short flight from Kota Bahru airport and plan your departure from Perhentian Island around the ferry. I had to wait 4.5 hours in the airport for my flight home because I didn’t consult anyone before buying my flight and I regretted not buying a changeable ticket.

Perhentian island is really beautiful. Hope u have had a fabulous time on d island. D Bubu Villas r really charming. D arrabiata spaghetti n lobster looked scrumptious, d choc lava cake too, d rosemary lamb also.
I've been to Perhentian island once, n that was decades ago when I was a kid.
Thanks for sharing this absolutely wonderful video. What an escapade from KL. U can see more of Malaysia from d train ride.
Oh my dear. U reminded me of my past as soon as I see d KL Sentral Station, I was working in MIDA HQ in KL Sentral area. I will be passing this station, Monday to Friday, every week, well except when I was posted to Mumbai for 3 years.
Yes it was such a fun trip, I am very lucky being here in Malaysia! Thank you!
@@AngelaCarson Yes u r, very lucky indeed. 🙂
Been there at Bubu…it was the best resort ive ever been… the ambiences, vibes really really amazing!!! The downside is, its quite pricey 😅 but heyy… with the long beach view, the amenities…we think its worth it!!! Love your vlog, reminded my experiences in this resort 😍😍😍
Ahhhhhhhh nice, yes it's a love and very chill property I can't wait to return to :-)
You are so inspiring as a solo traveler! Enjoy and have safe trip
Thanks so much!! That is a very lovely comment. Be well and stay safe too :-)
Angela, it's really good to see another wonderful video, just a day ago, it was your lovely video, having ramadan buffet in W Hotel.
Thank you! You have a lovely weekend!
@@AngelaCarson U too, dear Angela, have a great weekend. 🙂
I just can't wait I'm headed for KL in July!!!!!!
Oh nice! It's wonderful the borders are finally open :-)
Nice Vlog Angela ☺️
I can explain the bird noise on speakers, highly likely it is there to deter birds and stop them from nesting in the area. In areas like these, birds can be very messy and ruin the local area with bird poo! That's my best guess lol
Ahhhhhh yeah maybe! It's the wildest thing I've ever heard come out of a speaker haha
Nice vlog 👍🌞🍀 Enjoy your time 💖😃😇
Thank you 😊
I love ❤️ Malaysia so adventure, green and healthy foods 👏
Back to back amazing vlogs, I now have to manage to fit in this place in my itinerary, place looks really good.
Last time I was in Malaysia was in 2020 and visited Avani sepang Gold Coast, loved the infinity pool, it is bit outside of Kl city but really good relaxing place. Keep up the good work I am sure I’ll be having an amazing holiday later this year thanks to your suggestions.
You just put the biggest smile on my face, as helping people make travel decisions is my #1 goal :-) Thank you!!!! Happy to have you adding to the conversation as well
@@AngelaCarson such a sweet message. I have been following your vlogs for over 3 years now and must admit my 2 time travel has been inspired by your choices of hotels. Element in KL and I stayed at Casa del Rio melaka. This time I wanna go 1 step higher and would like your advise on a hotel which according to you has the most amazing club lounge, although I have booked EQ I’m not sure if their club lounge is operating. I really liked your video on impiana Kl and intercontinental. On a side note thanks for suggesting grab plus (I reckon you made a video about it few years back) to us on our travel as that was really useful. Really appreciate your videos and hard work that you have put in last few years. So glad that you back in Malaysia.
Thank you :-) I don't know the EQ but I remember in KL the best Club Lounges from my experiences were Shangri-La and Ritz-Carlton. Westin was good, too! And Impiana was the best of the "affordable luxury" hotels I reviewed (cheap and cheerful, big lounge!)
Loved the experience 🔥
So glad, it was very fun to shoot!
Perhentian island is more suitable for backpackers. If you prefer a five star hotel you should try staying at Redang Island. But the night life in Perhentian is the best!
Thank you for having me in your video
Thanks for shooting those train shots of me! Was great to meet you
I really enjoyed this vlog. It has everything, very adventurous. U were on a train, boat n airplane. U did a lovely review on d villas. U met lots of nice people. U have had a scrumptious food. U showed d beauty of d island. U had a fun night on d island. One if d best videos, I've seen from u, very entertaining.
Thanks a ton - yeah, felt like a very action-packed video even though I didn't go snorkelling and see the fishes. Thanks for the kind words, Yasin :-)
@@AngelaCarson Thanks for d action packed video. Maybe next time u could do snorkeling. 🙂
@@AngelaCarson And u also found time to do community service by cleaning some rubbish by d shore of d beautiful beach. Otherwise, d white sandy beach will no longer be pristine. 🙂
@@AngelaCarson I used to live in Tanah Merah when I was a kid. We lived in a District Officer bungalow, quite near to d small town centre. In front of our house is d main road n across it was a field of kamunting trees, local berries, n not far from it, is d railway track n a beautiful railway bridge. Even I was a kid, I still remember d house, we use to have campfire in front of d house compound n do corn bbq etc. So much memories in d small town before we moved to Kota Bahru. 🙂
ejoyed,amazing job~
Thank you!!! First big travel vlog for me in many months. Was crazy fun 😁😁
Beautiful nature money cannot buy.
Yes, true
I just love how you make this❤️❤️❤️ ( jealous)
It was hell and heaven all in one journey hahahhha Big hugs! How was Lake Toba?
@@AngelaCarson I saw it. Still here🙏🏻
Wow nice. Thx
Hi Angela, We are a big fan of all your adventures especially Pakistan. I believe everyone here truly appreciate the exposure you provided on Pakistan's tourism industry.
Pakistan is missing you so plz come back. Pakistan really deserves you !!
Ahhhh thank you. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of Pakistan. I feel like I"m meant to live there but I'm not sure Pakistan feels the same as it was impossible to get a long term visa :-(
Going to perhentian next week...
.. for my 12th time.
Been this island in 2019 just before COVID and all, and it’s absolutely beautiful.
I heard it was quite a party island before but it's just so chill now
@@AngelaCarson Think it depends what time of the season you go there. I went in October just before end of the season so it was quite, chilled and relaxing. funny enough I also stayed at Bubu villa and alunan resort (bit too quite that part of the island and more suitable for families maybe, thankfully I stayed only 1 day and moved to Bubu).
@@Brissyren I loved Bubu, peaceful to the MAX!
Haven't been to KL since , 2018 , need a trip back . Trains look upgraded
Hopefully you'll get back soon to KL :-)
@@AngelaCarson yes, born in JB lived there 16 years , but. Wow the changes are coming fast .. enjoy
Hi can you please confirm
how much distance from
Stesen Ktm Tumpat to Perhentian Island via Ferry?
and how much ferry charge?
Distance I don't remember ... and if you stay at one of the luxury properties, it's included :-) For a budget property, not sure....
@@AngelaCarson okay
thank you so much
Hope i can go there too someday😅
Hi. May i know what station did you stop? And what transport are you using from the station to jetty?
it's all in the video ....
How do you get to perhentian island from tanah metah?
All the nicer hotels have boat transfer service :-)
Nice 👍🙂
Thanks 😊
dnt take drink if serve from plastic glases..thts why 1 of the reason still mny trsh thre
7.38 crossing the Guillemard Bridge
Yeah, I can clearly hear d disturbing ambient from d noisy kuds in d background. It was supposed to be a pleasant night sleep in d train. 2 hours sleep was definitely not enough to start a day exploration.
I'll never do an overnight train in Malaysia again unless they start offering private cabins like in Pakistan and other countries...
@@AngelaCarson I think there r private cabins in KTM, but I'm not sure to which destination. 🙂
@@AngelaCarson I thought, I'm d only one who is sensitive to noises. U mentioned about d loud azan in one of your earlier video n u used earplug later. Well, Ive been going thru d same situation, day n nite for so many years. Near my house is about 4 to 5, small mosque n a mosque. D state mosque that u like is also not far away, but I could hardly hear d azan. But I could clearly hear d azans, five times a day from d other 4 to 5 small mosques n a mosque. And in my neighborhood, there r many chinese who owns territorial dogs that make so much disturbing noises, day n nite. Not only that, almost every nite, mat rempit,d illegal motorcycles n cars racers will make horrible noises, esp at nite time. I can't be using earplug all d time. U had a 2 hours sleep, n I understood that situation very well. In my case, it's a daily story that I have to.endure, my rights to a peace of mind is constantly violated by irresponsible people. My closest neighbor, likes to play with his car doors, sometimes, four or five times a day, he moves his car from.his garage to in front of his house n slammed d four doors each time, it sounds like a crazy person, a retired school headmaster. And there r few people near my house who likes to do hammering in their house. It's difficult situation, but I try to remain calm n collected, hehehe. 🙂
The bird noises are recordings of a type of swallow to attract them to the building to make their nests there. They are lucrative business ventures but some flout local guidelines making a nuisance to the neighbourhoods. Traditionally birds nest were used to be gathered from their natural nesting places high up on cliffs far away from human settlement.
Interesting!! So, the birds are sold? Or the eggs?
@@AngelaCarson it's the nest, actually made of the dried birds saliva. Believed to have various health benefits. If you have time just look up edible bird nest in CZcams or Google.
You're not joking, right? Ohhhh I feel bad now, I deleted 2 other comments from people I thought were leaving racist / snarky comments about the bird nest soup! haha Oops
bird's nest soup is very expensive
Didn't know they got airport in Terengganu..
Yeah! Not great for long wait as there are only 2 places to eat but it was comfortable.
Those bird noises is actually to attract swallow birds to nest in the building... They will collect the nests...
Ohhhhh interesting! How do you know that? I'm so curious
@@AngelaCarson we have the same thing in my place
Angela, perhaps you can use a small microphone to speak like some vloggers as the background noise at public places will be distracting to listeners. This is so that you do not hv to speak loudly onto the camera.
Yes, good idea ... thank you
