- Making my choices for the Replacements best songs ever was NOT easy! I must have left off an album's worth of material--speaking of which, even their B-sides are great. And I was clearly crunched for time, so I only spoke about songs on their major LPs. Tell me your favorite Replacements songs in the comments, and let me know how I did!

Here's a great repressing of Pleased To Meet Me on vinyl. There's something about this album that always charms me. It's such a beautiful mess. And the band (all three of them) show so many different sides from track to track:
amzn.to/3AepT4L
For all you completists, this digital version of the Tim album is expanded with some very interesting bonus tracks:
amzn.to/3lBEKlw
This vinyl pressing of the underrated Don't Tell A Soul is on clear vinyl, and sounds wonderful. It'll spare you having to track down the original like I did:
amzn.to/3rYy9mj
Here's Dead Man's Pop, if you need to be a completist about Don't Tell A Soul. Yes, it tells the WHOLE story of the album--and I have to admit, the remix is revelatory. You get studio stuff, live stuff, Tom Waits stuff! Featuring four CDs and one LP, it's doubtful they'll ever create a better DTAS package:

If you'd like to learn even more about this wonderful band, check out Bob Mehr's brilliant Trouble Boys, the definitive biography of The Replacements:

You forgot Bastards of Young....wow!
@@falconerpdx Nope, I covered it about nine minutes in. Could never forget that!
@@PopCultureGraveyard mucho apologies I am watching election coverage.
@@falconerpdx No worries! Happy to be a distraction from that
Tommy gets his tonsils out is a classic!
Wow man, I just got into The Replacements last month heavily. Started with Tim and went chronologically, favorite currently is let it be, solid gold. You killed it and hit all the nails on the head. This band just has something super special, crazy good lyrics and lots of hidden gems when it comes to natural musician ship.
Hey brother, thanks a lot for the kind words. You're so right about the natural musicianship--these boys could really play. As for songs, I'd put these guys' throwaways against other bands' hits. I like how my favorite album by them changes from year to year. That's the mark of a truly great band.
I'm a little late but welcome to the fold. When I first found them, I listened to NOTHING ELSE for almost 2 years and was entirely satisfied. I' could still give everything else up and be fine.
"Wait on the sons of no one" is the actual lyric on Bastards of Young. Which is even cooler than "we are"
YES! You know, I went my whole life until about six years ago, when I read Trouble Boys, thinking it was "we are" instead of "wait on." But after so many years of people mishearing it (due to Paul intentionally swallowing the end of the word "wait" and the end of the word "on"), and Paul himself even singing the words "We are," as he does clearly on their SNL appearance, it wasn't a comment fight I was ready to have. Anyway, you're clearly a real 'Mats fan. Thanks so much for the comment!
@@PopCultureGraveyard If you know the bible verse Paul refers to for the line, you win the no-prize. Cannot find that info anywhere; only Paul saying that after he himself remembered this fact. I've looked and found nothing.
No mention of Unsatisfied? That is almost criminal. And Rock n Roll Ghost on DTAS is such a classic, glad to see Anywhere is Better Than Here get mentioned though!
It's clear that no disclaimer will get me off the hook for not mentioning every single song on every single album. We all have our favorites. I really tried to keep this video down to a reasonable length so I only picked my top few off each LP. In general, DTAS is aging very well, and revisiting it was a pleasure.
"The ones, love us best are the ones we'll lay to rest
And visit their graves on holidays at best
The ones, love us least are the ones we'll die to please
If it's any consolation, I don't begin to understand them"-This excerpt is really brilliant, I totally agree. And it sort of sound like a Keats poem. I am not sure if Westerberg meant that way, but in a cosmic way it´s an encounter of intergeneration romanticism.
I totally agree that if Westerberg had been a poet, he'd have been one of the romantics--especially one drunk on hemlock! Thanks for the comment!
I been schooled! I’ve been listening to The Replacements since 84 and have considered them my all time favorites for just about as long and don’t know half the things you seem to know about them and their songs. Most of your observations of the songs, lyrics, and particularly the song arrangement order was very insightful, much of which has escaped me over the 37 years I’ve been listening. Very observant, insightful and flat out funny. Nice work.
My own favorite Replacements song? A ridiculous venture as so many are my favorites but just in the spirit of things:
Sorry Ma: Shiftless When Idle
Stink: Go
Hootenanny: Mr Whirly
Let It Be: Sixteen Blue ( although I Will Dare made me a fan)
Tim: Left Of The Dial,
Pleased To Meet Me: I Don’t Know,
Don’t Tell A Soul: I Won’t
All Shook Down: Someone Take The Wheel
Thanks Don! So happy you enjoyed the episode! You're so right; picking favorites among that treasure trove of a song catalog is an exercise in futility. That said, those are all great songs you mentioned--with some nice deep cuts. Thanks for the kind words, and for taking the time to comment. And welcome to the channel!
I'm old and new to Mats. Vids like this help me discover what I missed. Thx!
Glad to hear it, Lee! Always happy to meet a new Replacements fan. Enjoy your 'Mats journey, and welcome to the channel!
@@PopCultureGraveyard I'm from Buffalo NY, as I'm listening/thinking uhhhh...these guys sound familiar here/there. Wow. Can you say Goo!?
My all-time favorite American band...can't wait to watch this one! Tim is my favorite album, but Let It Be and PTMM are right there as well. And honestly, I love them all in their own way.
Hey Mort! Hope you enjoy it! And I feel your pain trying to pick a favorite. Mine alternates from month to month and year to year!
Tim is my all time favorite Mats album!
I can't argue with that! Such a classic LP!
I just came across this today. Good stuff! Well done sir!
Thanks a lot, Shawn! So glad you enjoyed it, and welcome to the channel!
Excellent! Most comprehensive and useful retrospective of the American treasure that was The Replacements. Blows my mind that people still spend more effort highlighting how much beer that drank instead of really listening to their incredible catalog. 💕
So glad you enjoyed the video! You're very right about most people focusing on the wrong thing when it comes to this band. They may be the most under-appreciated band ever. Thanks for the kind words!
Just discovered your channel while looking for new Replacements discussions on YT; the fact I’ve watched this everyday the past week with a smile on my face is all you need to know about your analysis. You got yourself a new subscriber. “I hate music...it’s got too many notes”
So glad it holds up to repeat viewings! Welcome to the channel, and thanks for the great comment!
Here Comes a Regular is fantastic and a hell of a closing song. Been a Mats fan since mid-80s. Paul's solo material might also be worth a video (if you haven't already? This is the first video of yours I have seen). The poetry and snide attitude continue but there's also a mellowing that is worth noting as we all grow a bit older.
You do a great job on the video and analysis. Keep it up!
Hey, Chris, I agree with you about Paul's solo stuff. There's also a buoyant quality to them, almost as if he's enjoying the freedom of going his own way and not having to compromise anymore. I'm not sure I can get to a Paul solo episode, but I'll put it on the list. Please do check out my other episodes; I'm sure there's other bands here you like. Thanks for the great comment!
Saw the Replacements live several times circa 1983-88. Even slammed a pint of Jim Beam with Tommy in an ally behind the venue in 84. Was gutted when Bob passed. Saw reunion tour in 2014, wasn’t quite the same. Tommy remembered me though amazingly enough.
Holy hell! That's awesome! You definitely were at ground zero when it comes to that band. Would have loved to have seen them back them. I can totally believe that the 2014 experience didn't even come close to the 'Mats you knew in the '80s. But at least you've got those memories!
Please To Meet Me is where I hopped on board. Great album all around.
You sure picked a great one to hop on! PTMM is only getting better with age.
I found this video, and checked the rest of your videos. You’ve got some major taste my friend! Cheers!!!
Thanks for the kind words, Buzz. That makes two of us!
I could not have explained it any better myself. You nailed it to the wall. Thank you, simply fantastic!
Thank you, David! I appreciate the kind words. So glad you enjoyed it.
Love this! My brother and I were just talking about how great "Willpower" is, a few days ago. Let It Be was also my introduction to the greatness that is The Replacements, back in the late summer of 1989...they have been my favorite band ever since.
Thanks, Tom! Willpower is such a hidden gem. You totally got into the band the best possible way. That Let It Be album is an all-time classic that just seems to get better and better every year.
Another great video Hollis. I'm a fan of the Mats, especially the mid-period. Tim and Pleased To Meet Me are my favorite albums. I Will Dare is my favorite song. Cheers! - Matt
Thanks a lot, Matt! Yeah, that mid-period has a lot of magic. Can't fault I Will Dare as a favorite, it's probably the song by them I've played the most over the years.
Great video! I’m a long time Replacements fan and your video took me back through memory lane. You’re 100% on with Westerberg. Lyrics, songwriting, etc. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for the kind words! So glad you enjoyed the episode, and always nice meeting a fellow Replacements fan. Welcome to the channel!
I Will Dare is in my top 5 too. Of ALL TIME not just Replacements songs. Also probably i ever heard a mandolin in a rock song.
Oh, it is SO top-5 worthy! And it's so funny to me that Paul Westerberg plays a mandolin on their one song that features guitar playing by Peter Buck--who would later ride a mandolin all the way to success on Losing My Religion.
Nice video. Really enjoyed it! I am in the middle of writing my own album and song ranking of the 'Mats and we are in sync on a lot of their best tracks. I especially loved the mention of I Don't Know, an underappreciated track. I also really love Shooting Dirty Pool, which doesn't seem to get much love but has some hilarious lines, including one of my all time faves: "you're the coolest guy that I ever have smelled."
Thanks for the great comment! I hear ya on Shooting Dirty Pool. "Get your money on the table, get your head out of your ass" was always a real lyrical winner! Good luck with your 'Mats piece, and welcome to the channel!
best review of the mats today - well done
Thank you, my friend! So glad you enjoyed it
"Rock and Roll Ghost" is a majestic dream track that endures in a different way then anything else in the entire Mats catalog.
My favorites from each album are:
Sorry Ma: Johnny’s Gonna Die, Raised in the City, Careless, Shiftless when idle
Stink: Go
Hootenanny: Within Your Reach, Color Me Impressed, You Lose, Take Me Down To the Hospital
Let It Be: Favorite Thing, Answering Machine, Unsatisfied, I Will Dare
Tim: Hold My Life, Left of the Dial, Little Mascara, Can’t Hardly Wait (Acoustic Version)
Pleased to Meet Me: Never Mind
Don’t Tell a Soul: Talent Show, I’ll Be You
All Shook Down: Haven’t listened to it extensively enough to say, but I remember thinking Merry-Go-Round was pretty good
All fantastic songs--every last one of them! Paul has such an amazing body of work as a songwriter.
@@PopCultureGraveyard glad we can agree on that
@@PopCultureGraveyard yes, especially Within Your Reach/Favorite Thing (my fav two Replacements songs)
You said you weren’t doing to but then you did!!! Love it!
Ha! Thanks, pal. I can't help myself!
Little mascara - swinging party - valentine - nightclub jitters - aching to be
I can't argue with any of those! Thanks for the comment!
This is a great retrospective on a great underappreciated band. I really enjoyed this. Paul Westerberg is a very intelligent lyricist who wrote a fair share of memorable catchy tunes that put him up there with the best songwriters rock has to offer.
Thank you so much! I'm totally with you on Paul's place in the pantheon of great songwriters. Welcome to the channel!
@@PopCultureGraveyard Thanks. I'm checking out your other episodes. Keep up the great work!!
You’re so right in your judgments. It’s is nice.
Thank you, my friend! Appreciate the kind words.
Excellent video from an obvious true 'Mats fan. However, I have to make one correction about one of my favorite 'Mats songs you mentioned: Skyway.
I'm not sure if you were joking, but you said that Skyway is literally about a skyway, which isn't true. I believe that there's a pretty clear narrative taking place in the lyrics.
The first verse, the narrator is walking on a one way street while wearing a hat gloves to fend off the cold. Meanwhile, they see the "you" walking in the skyway above them. The narrator then spends their nights lying awake fantasizing about meeting the person.
In the final verse, the narrator gets their wish because they see the other person walking down the one way. However, because the narrator decided to go up into the skyway that day, they're missing each other yet again.
This is why I love Westerberg as a writer. He takes these simple images and stories and exposes fascinating themes and commentaries with his lyrics.
Thanks for making this video, and I hope this helped deepen everyone's appreciation of a deceptively "pedestrian" song. :)
Hello, fellow 'Mats fan! I absolutely was joking, simply to make a point about how Paul could make a song with a deeper meaning about a topic so "seemingly" ordinary. But I LOVED hearing your breakdown on the song meaning. I totally agree, and you put it more succinctly than I ever could. Thanks for the great comment!
I live in Minneapolis, which has 11 miles of skyway. There are certain feelings you get only while walking the skyway and Westerberg captured many of them brilliantly
When I was a 2nd year in high school (1986?) I had nothing else to do and the Replacements were playing at a little roadhouse bar called Heartbeat in Oyster Bay, Long Island (NY). I didn’t own any of their albums at the time, but local radio station WLIR played them and a couple of the great tracks from their recent release Tim.
This venue had the smallest stage- I’d seen numerous gigs there (the call, Ramones, fishbone, the church and so many others). The band seemed disheveled and ragged (probably drunk and low on sleep- I think they had a gig in NYC the previous night) and got up on that tiny stage and proceeded to rip our heads off. They launched into Bastards of Young and it was a real thrill to see that live in such an intimate venue.
The recently issued For Sale live recorded at Maxwell’s in Hoboken captures that era well. Check it out! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_Sale:_Live_at_Maxwell's_1986
Holy hell, Ed, we're exactly the same age--and I grew up listening to LIR too! No wonder we're always in sync. Wow, you saw some amazing shows there. I love tiny venues like that. PS: I've always loved that Maxwell's show. So envious you caught them during those joyously sloppy Bob years!
@@PopCultureGraveyard My brotha from another mother! Yeah I got into more alternative eclectic music pretty early thanks to WLIR. And since then I’d see these relatively new/unknown bands at tiny clubs/venues. The 80’s and 90’s were such a good time for that, before things got carried away with video/television and of course later the Internet and social media. It’s nice that this club scene hasn’t completely faded away, but it’s not quite like it was a few decades ago.
That's two f'n awesome weeks in a row. Velvets and Mats. Or as the kids might say - PCG is LIT.
Haha! Thanks, Joe. Trying to stay LIT is exhausting.
"Unsatisfied" , "Sixteen Blue", no? Paul's finest vocal delivery on that album.
I heard the song Alex Chilton once on college radio when I was maybe 14. Stuck in my head but knew nothing about who sang it and didn’t hear it again. Maybe 5 years later I randomly bought Pleased to Meet Me on tape in a discount bin... put it in my Walkman, yes WALKMAN...and then there it was! My all time favourite Mats song.
I'm probably a tad older than you. I think I first heard the song when I saw the video for it. That wonderful static video. Such a magical song. I really used to love my walkman. There was something about listening to an entire album or even a mixtape I made myself on a walkman while out and about, that was far warmer and quaint than the digital coldness of today's ear-bud options. Perhaps it's just nostalgia. But it's true. As for the Replacements being in a discount bin...that's a crime!
@@PopCultureGraveyard you’d be surprised I turn 50 in January. As for the Mats being in a discount bin, well I lived in small town New Zealand so if it wasn’t Dr Hook or Cold Chisel it wasn’t gonna be popular in my town. Now... get on that Husker Du deep dive (please).
@@songstofuckto Haha, I turn 50 next month. I can't believe I "out-ed" myself like that, age wise, but men of a certain age have to stick together. And Husker Du's coming, don't worry!

"Look me in the eye and tell me that I'm satisfied" can't get much better lyrics than that.
YES! Fantastic song. I wish I could have gone in depth on each and every song in their catalog. They all deserve it.
Do all ‘mats fans prefer Tim and previous albums or is it just me? Bob was the jam, and they weren’t the same after for me. I can’t be alone.
I think there are plenty of 'Mats fans that share your preference; I used to be one of them. I think there's magic in all those Bob albums, but I think doing Pleased without Bob unlocked something in Paul--an adventurousness that's evident his later songwriting. I think they were evolving, and became a different sort of band in which Bob no longer fit. Nowadays I like both Replacements, mark 1 and mark 2.
The Mats are my favorite American rock & roll band.
One of the best to ever do it.
@@PopCultureGraveyard I saw them play their last show in Chicago ‘91, and their first back in the states in ‘13. I have almost every solo-record any of them have released too. I heard them at a college-party in ‘88 & it literally changed my life & musical direction … thank god. ☮️
I just subscribed because of this video. I have no fav Mats song, they all are my fav,
Thanks a lot, Darron! Picking a favorite is damn near impossible with a catalog like the 'Mats. Welcome to the channel!
Customer will always be my favorite track on Sorry Ma
I can totally see that. Paul's sloppy vocals on that are charming as hell, and I doubt the band has ever played faster.
Hey dude I don’t know if you still check these comments but I just wanted to ask where you bought your t shirt it’s really cool
read the Discogs feature about 'the Mats' a few month ago and was shocked how sick and how deep into booze they where...
...interesting they like 'Minor Threat' and go after the debut for short into HC and because the great hand-stamped cover i must buy 'stink' immediately (sadly not for a bargain) it's not a perfect 12" but a great statement! Btw. i'm a huge fan of your YT-work...
Thanks, Mike, I appreciate the kind words. Yes, Stink is a fun blast of noise. I purposely didn't include everything they did. But I figure anyone who gets as far as all the studio albums can decide if they're ready for Stink or How Did The Vomit Get Up On The Ceiling or Maxwells or any other deeper stuff. Have you read Trouble Boys? if you want all the good stuff as well as all that sick, boozy stuff, that bio has all the bases covered. Highly recommended.
This is great, but... I believe you could have gone as deep on the Let it Be segment as you did on the Tim segment (no mention of Answering Machine, Seen Your Video or Unsatisfied?
I hear you. It was hell trying to chop this video down to an edible length. They just have too many great songs! Thanks for the comment!
keep doin what youre doin man..
Thank you, my brother! Much appreciated
Hi Hollis… Tommy Stinson was my Lover ♥️♥️♥️
Why no Stink??
Uh oh, another hardcore 'Mats fan called me on that. I made the decision to concentrate on the full-length albums (and leave off any EPs, B-sides, bootlegs or PW solo stuff), because I always have a hell of a time chopping these videos down to a good length. If I HAD included Stink, I would have included Kids Don't Follow and Stuck In The Middle, which are my favorites off them. Thanks for stopping by!
@@PopCultureGraveyard I figured because it was an EP. My fav would be Go but Kids and Stuck are more representative of their punk sound at that time. Good review.

Love it!
I’m still laughing about Tommy being three years old😂😂😂😂
That was problably already commented here, but the lyrics of the Bastards of Young chorus is: "Wait on the sons of no one" and not "We are the sons of no one".
Apart from that, pretty nice video :)
Hello there. You're absolutely right about the lyrics. You're also right that someone mentioned that about a week ago. This is what I replied to him: "I went my whole life until about six years ago, when I read Trouble Boys, thinking it was "we are" instead of "wait on." But after so many years of people mishearing it (due to Paul intentionally swallowing the end of the word "wait" and the end of the word "on"), and Paul himself even singing the words "We are," as he does clearly on their SNL appearance, it wasn't a comment fight I was ready to have." So, basically since that pronunciation has entered the lexicon among the majority, I'm just going with it. Thanks for the comment--and the kind words!
More than any other band, when you get to the end of a Replacements record you've been through an emotional wringer. The highest highs, the lowest lows, and every emotion in between. And you didn't even mention Little Mascara.
You're absolutely right about the emotional wringer, Paul's songs don't leave anything on the shelf. Unfortunately Little Mascara was one I had to cut when I was trying to get this down to a decent length, leaving only my MOST favorite songs, but it was in my original edit. There are just so many great songs!
Why does no one mention the ep “Stink”
I mean kids won’t follow is awesome
Dope smokin moron
I need a god damn job
Cmon it’s the best and never gets talked about
Sorry about that. I always have to make tough choices to cut some corners when I edit these things down to a digestible length, and Stink lost out. But it's a brilliantly gritty artifact.
As great as Let it be is, it does contain a fair amount of filler. Gary, Tonsils, Kiss Cover, etc. Answering Machine a high point.
I beg to differ. Tommy Got his Tonsils out is the Mats' Floyd the Barber; and sloppy, fun songs like that one and Gary's Got a Boner and Black Diamond, serve to balance out the album in my opinion. I agree they're not for everyone. But I think they help to round out an accurate description of who they were as a band back then.
@@PopCultureGraveyard im all for quality over balance : they are a quantum step down from the high points (dare, 16 blue, A.Machine, Etc). Tim suffered the same fate. Juvenile humour act dud them a disservice imho.
Been obsessed with Replacements since 1984! Had affair with Tommy Stinson💕Don’t be Jealous
