The song was written not only as a duet for the creator and his wife to perform at parties, it was written as a song EMPOWERING female agency at the time, so that the woman in the song, who *wanted to stay over* but societal expectations said that premarital sex was *sinful* , could have some agency in her own life without being labeled a whore.
It's such bullshit that people give a song from 1944 grief about lyrics that mean literally an entirely different thing than today in 2023.
