greg lake with his 8 string bass cool.
Greg did the best he could under the circumstances at the time. To me was just as good as John was. Two truly gifted musicians may God rest both of them
Hedid great
I love Steve’s guitar performance.
Greg made a perfect job.
Losing Greg and Keith was like losing my older brothers
Best substitute lead vocal performance ever. Greg Lake's voice has built-in royalty.
Yeah he did a great job
Wetton left; it was rumored that he was having issues with Alcohol and his bandmates confronted him about his sloppy playing when they performed live.
Lake was probably number one choice
What a dream come true!! GL was top notch
His intonation is very bad.
Greg Lake is the grandfather of progressive rock
How I loved Emerson Lake and Palmer then two members go to Asia they where just outstanding.
Without doubt, on of the best bands of the world.
Greg Lake is awesome. Love this!!!
Thank you for putting this up for all the Asia fans out there.
I am a fan of Carl Palmer
You can switch up Wetton and Lake anytime, I loved those guys with King Crimson
How many keyboards do you want?
Yes!
Exhausting watching him run around so much, too much multitasking! And to think at the same time as this, he was subbing as the Tap's keyboardist.....
The Japanese are so polite ! Carl Palmer's kit is a thing of beauty.
Wow! Greg's playing one of his 8 string alembics. He had switched to the headless Steinberger for this. Surprising.
I remember when I saw this on MTV way back in the day. I had no idea about the John Wetton drama at that time, but knew right away that it was Greg Lake on bass and vox. Took me years to find out why. He did an admirable job on short notice, but he didn't quite hit the Wetton notes.
Wetton is Tenor, Lake is baritone. Different Tesituras.
@@lavallee1963 Wetton was a high baritone. Definitely not a tenor.
Yeah, I missed hearing the high notes that John did, but Greg's voice sounds similar enough to JW's that the song's integrity was intact.
Lake

the ego trips behind the scenes was the big reason he didn't give it his all: he wanted out - ASAP!!
for a ripe ego such as Lake's, that is a hekuva statement!
🤌🙈🙉🙊🤌

Nice too see this a Asia fan.
Awesome underrated tune!
It was a hit. WTF?
@@haitolawrence5986 Wasn't in Guardian's of the Galaxy though.
I remember watching this in December, 1983.
This time period with ASIA was a bit strange. JW was out, Greg in; then for ASTRA in 1985, Greg was out, Steve was out, JW back. ASIA ASTRA a solid album was released in late fall 1985 and did not do to well despite a solid quality group of songs...
I followed all the band members, and still do today. Greg and JW, missed, greatly...
Strange because John was impossible to work with as he was a miserable alcoholic at this time which was hush hush back then and is more and more coming out in the open now. Real shame. ASIA could have been much bigger.
Here's one a lot of people don't know, the relationship continued after this, Greg and Geoff did an album together. Ride The Tiger. Think In The Hot Seat. Not that great but has some good moments. But a better version of Street War Than on In The Hot Seat. Would have been great to hear their version Man in the Long Black Coat. Greg's voice sound really good.
I had Love Under Fire from the Ride the Tiger project for years but only recently heard the full album . I still prefer ELPs Street Wars and Paper Blood ( Money Talks ) , its also interesting as his voice for RTT is still pretty good ( although struggling at times) , his voice went really downhill after Black Moon !
NI New. I-I need you Jonathan I miss you so much
Jonathan Jackson I miss you with all my heart I love you I wish you could just come back and get me
They came here to Bogotá colombia in 2009 , it was amazing. I hope to see them again. I love this band.😊🤘🤘
Somewhere deep inside MTV vaults is an Emerson, Lake, and Powell full concert video in high quality. The question is when will that see the light of day? Not many people know this. Would like to ask Carl what he knows about it.
Palmer you mean..Carl Palmer
So glad I got to see these guys live. A lot of people goofed on the whole supergroup thing, but jeez they were incredible.
So very thankful for this band my oldest son was stuck on gnz roses at the time that band made me sick when Asia come alone it was all over he never looked back and to this day many years later this band has him changed and for the better
As in GnR? Asia was out before they had formed.
I loved John Wetton's vocals since KCs Larks Tongues album..but Greg nailed it..
Amazing that this is only 6 years removed from the classic Works album for Greg and Carl. Years back then were like decades. Now they’re like weeks.
During this time Japan was way ahead of the curve. Several bands that were popular in the USA were HUGE in there. Cheap Trick, Night Ranger and "Survivor" to name a few. Did I omit anyone ?
Toto
@@crcruise Cool. I did not know that. I appreciate the reply. ✌
Asia had the best selling album in the US for 9 weeks…
Thanks Asia, love music and song foreiver 🙏😍👍👍🎸🎸🎸❤🇮🇹
mindblowing!
Bravo Greg.
As close to the original as it gets..
The Great CARL PALMER !! I didn't know about the Wetton thing either, but I AM spending $140 for the new box set !! See "Dave Galant Unboxing" from 11 days ago ! How great to see Greg Lake and Carl Palmer together, what a kick!!
That`s not true ASIA.
A virtually flawless performance of this timeless classic. Fabulous musicianship.
Still miss Greg Lake. He didn't handle the vocals the way John Wetton would have, but I don't care. He's still a great guitar player and a fantastic performer. Actually, I miss them both.
Agreed
As much as I appreciate JW, I think because he really has G Lake vibes. To me Gregg Lake is the best.
1980s funky fresh
Powerfull!
Fantastico
I bought the VHS tape years ago, but either this is from a different performance, or else the sound is dramatically improved. I look forward to the el cheapo CD version.
Carl Palmer ripping it up.
Greg lake saves the day…. RIP
Awesome.
Hola.
Muy buen grupo. Increibles sus melodias, ritmos, composiciones y demás.
Saludos.
Nice song
Greg was given 6 weeks to prepare for the gig and of course did a good job but he should've insisted that Howe lower the keys, this is in D, would've been better for Greg in C then he could've hit the high notes which he didn't even attempt.
I agree
We watched this on MTV when it aired. From what I remember it came on pretty late that evening. There were delays or something. Had to go to school the next day and was pretty tired. haha
I remember this concert on MTV. I bet Geoff Downes hated his keyboard arrangement spread out over the middle of the "A." The keyboards would normally be stacked and to the left and right of him. I remember technicians with black gloves on their hands coming up from behind the keyboards to switch knobs.
Geoff had all the 80"s moves
I was there!!! ;)
Cool!
I dont see you
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤
Greg couldn’t hit hose high notes like John though. Both of them were lead singers for King Crimson.
E' vero.

HIS LIFE WILL BE OVER AND LIVES ON!! |/:).
😎👍💗🇬🇧🥁🔥🎼💣🔊)) GO CARL GO!!!
Surely there’s a way to improve the ergonomics of Geoff’s keyboard setup.
Best Asia song IMHO.
And he spends the entire show with his back to the audience? At least he gets his steps in.
Yeah, I was thinking, did Geoff have to do the whole show with his back to the audience?. Surely there could've been a better setup for him.
Greg was a perfect substitute for this concert. But I wished John sang this concert

Sounds different 1/2 beat faster, but I like it!
R.I.P John Wetton
YELP !?
Question now is will it have Time Again , second will have the Asia in Asia interviews
i'LL BE WITH YOU IN JUST ONE MINUTE!! |/:).
GD that was a good outro solo, top of his game here. Greg did alright but it's still a shame it was not John and a proper Documentation of the band.
fuck yes
That's a tough unruly crowd, dangerous, out of control, kamakazi!!!!
Faith. for our soul survived.?...
Back when MTV was music TV
one Question for any bass player out their , why would Greg Lake need an 8 string bass for this song
As Greg told me years ago, he simply felt it was the right sound for this song. Any time I hear his Alembic 8 String Scorpion is fine with me
Forgive my ignorance but may i ask when did the more that 4 string bass come upon the seen ? I'm just an old guy so go easy on me man !
@@1HUFFMAN the day a person can not feel free to ask a Question then quite honestly were all damned
One of the leaders of the 12 string bass was Tom Pederson of Cheap Trick , the why I am not going to try and answer cause I truly don't know ,but I will and get you an answer, also Jack Bruce use the Fender Bass 6
@@alfredoescalante7418 OK bud, I appreciate the reply !

MTV at the beginning
Is John Wetton singing?
So the only way to get the blu-ray is to buy the deluxe box set?! That sucks! Who makes these decisions? Their terrible! Why can't you have a Blu-ray/CD package??
The only way to have bluray is the Deluxe box set...now, but in the future I think will be released alone.
@@lavallee1963 cheers. I actually bought the Japan box set with no vinyl and the blu-ray is region free. cost inc shipping was actually £5 less than amazon UK LOL
@@fleece1969 Thanks for the information.
The keyboard 🎹 ist sure could use MIDI🤔
No high notes?
Well have been an Asia fan since first heard sole survivor back in 82, apologies to Greg Lake fans, but this was a carrer killer for the band. Fans were left in total confusion as to where John Wetton was me included and sorry just not the same without Wetton on vocals and Bass! Lake was an obvious choice on short notice and does ok, yet it is simply not the Asia that you heard on your radio and Wetton is sorely missed. I saw the original 4 twice in 82 in STL and 2008 in Milwaukee, also have the reunion dvd from tokyo so I will watch a couple videos from this show, but not buying the dvd set.
They lost your phone number, Lemmy was busy - what were they going to do?
When John Wetton sang it live it didn't sound the same as a record either. Greg Lake is one of the best singers in rock history he did pretty darn good I think.
John as ASIA.
Steve was not leader of ASIA.
Bad video crop and horrible frame again 🙄
I'm not a Geoff Down's fan, he always struck me as a Wakeman or Emerson wanna be and watching this just reaffirms my thoughts..
He speaks so highly of you.
He is very talented. This isn't challenging for him, though.
Bad lead vocal ... The rest sounds fantastic, though.
Vocals are just awful
Not even JW could sing his own songs LIVE
