  • In this Video Corin trims a unique tree so we just had to capture the initial trimming of this tree to show you.
Crepe Myrtle, scientifically known as Lagerstroemia indica, is a deciduous flowering shrub or small tree that is native to Asia and is widely cultivated for its colorful and showy flowers. It is particularly popular in landscaping and gardening due to its vibrant blooms, attractive bark but we have a unique example as bonsai to show you today.

At some point the owner may want to take those branches down to the trunk or close to it. Those are a bit long without ramification. It's never going to get the division unless you start over. I'm no expert but I think that's what my teacher would have me do. There are sooo many varieties of Crepe Myrtle. I like the coloring of this one. Just a tad of red. It's a great size for the foliage. Maybe some day mine will grow up and be a big bonsai like this one. Nothing like having your trees worked on by professionals every few years. Thank you for showing us this including the update. The tree seems to have liked your green house!
    Nice job,
    Mats

That's really cool! I'm looking for species I can use for bonsai here in Florida, and it never occurred to me to use a Crepe Myrtle even though they're everywhere here.
They seem to bud everywhere you make a cut, so I thought they would go crazy being pruned into a bonsai form. That is quite lovely though.
    Well, off to the nursery...😂

Really cool looking tree! Love the form, bark, large size. Thanks for showing the pruning and how hard they are able to take at this time of year. Great tips! Helps me to better do my job.

Cheers for that demo. My crepe myrtle gives me kittens every year. I live in a marine environment on the east harbour coast of Wellington Harbour (NZ). My myrtle is always slow to bud in the spring. Normally my deciduous bonsai have broken into leaf and looking lively long before my crepe myrtle gives itself a good shake and wakes up. Last year I was so happy to see it break that I had more than a few glasses of my pear wine. Nice to see you do something with a crepe myrtle. Thks Craig

I have one as an ornamental tree here in Australia. They are extremely hardy trees. The leaves turn a burnt orange in autumn.

This is the first time I've seen your site and I found it very interesting. I have a crepe myrtle that is my very first bonsai and it has super thick matted roots with a lot of very thick roots on top and I'm not sure how to handle it. When I got it I trimmed the roots as much as I could but the mat is so seriously sick that I didn't know quite what to do with it
