- Filmed at Hilton Park services M6 on Sunday 11 December 1994. Those were the days Sunday mornings busy with the Irish trucks stopping for a break. Plenty of Scania 3 series here, short clip at the Hollies Cafe for good measure. Part 2 to follow as the lorries head off southbound. Enjoy!!!
Fantastic film 😎 proper drivers with proper trucks and the names on the trailers are a distant memory 😳 many thanks for sharing
I remember serving my apprenticeship on trucks like these. Manual boxes , mechanical fuel injection , everything hard wired , a throttle cable!! Actually felt like you were driving these trucks unlike today. Hardly any overseas companies or drivers. Just think....back when this was filmed everyone would have been complaining how the job wasn't the same as it used to be , imagine if we had known the state of the haulage industry now compared to back then , Being a truck driver is a skilled job , but more so back then........We have all the latest technology and as someone said...LED light bars etc etc haha......but sadly the industry has gone backwards which is a great shame. This is a brilliant piece of video. People actually changing gear manually , and still getting better fuel economy than we have now!!!! No speed limiters , trackers or any CPC nonsense. You would almost think that drivers back then were actually trusted to go and do their job autonomosly rather than the micro managed constantly monitored crap we have today. Is it any wander some drivers don't care!!!!....Great video!!!!
Fantastic bud, 3 series Scania's still rules so many in this video, now we see R or S series Scania's at the services!
Fantastic old memories when the Scania V8 really sounded like a proper V8 with the roar it made and I can remember it vividly as a 13-15 year old boy catching the Saturday early evening or late night ferry crossing from Larne-Stranraer and then the 500’ miles long punch all through the night/morning down to Dover for the Sunday lunchtime or afternoon ferry crossing to Calais mainly and then travelling mainly to Italy with my late dad. I always remember Sandbach services on the M6 was just as busy on a Sunday morning too with loads of the Irish trucks heading south to Dover? Great days gone by and never to be forgotten! RIP Dad XX
Been to So many breakdowns at Hilton park services over the years.. I can almost smell the piss watching the video haha! Brilliant video
Absolutely fantastic bit of trucking history & memories shared in the video, looking forward to any more you might have
Every services was always full of Irish trucks heading for Dover on a Sunday. Could never get parked. Then off we would go only to be overtaken by them all doing 90. Everything done at foot to the floor speed. Take me hat off to these boys they knew how how to get from a to b quickly
Was there in back in the 80-90s with my father and brother who drove on the continent.. and all around England.. great memories for me.. but back then it didn't matter where you are from.. truckers stud together... Always remember delivering to places around England and everywhere we delivered too... Ye where always kind and generous and willing to give a hand... Thank you friend 😀😀
🙈😂 That reminds me of getting off the ferry in Pembroke in my little van,, travelling with a red 164 right up my back side doing 70 until they got tired of waiting, him and another 164 behind him passed me and disappeared into the night,,, 🇮🇪🇮🇪👋👋👋
They certainly did flat te the mat .🤠👍
Not a light bar to be seen. This is the era of haulage I fell in love with as a kid and set me up driving
you're right there, now in the 'customize everything' age we;re in - we seem to be in the age of the posers
@@garethifan1034 the level of professionalism seems to have slid so much over the last two decades. Having fifteen spots on the front of your motor and a million LED marker light's is now more important than knowing how to handle rope! The standard of drivers I witness on a daily basis is shocking, don't get me wrong, there's many "Drivers" still around but, it feels like the vast majority just want to whack the truck in 'D' and switch themselves off for the day. Would love to see how the vast majority of new drivers were to get on with a twin Eaton splitter etc. Still, I've been driving artics for ten years and I'm still as in love with the road as I was when I was 4years old in an old SK powerliner.
@@southerncomforttrucking9799 I know what you mean, I started off in an F7 in 1990 then went on to a Scania 112 then a M A N F2000 - it was a different time then. We worked hard to very hard lol, but it was fun and rewarding. I can't stand these flashing led's everywhere today. By the way - love the Twin Split - had it on the MAN..great box. Regards
Great film brings back good memories when trucking was a bit more fun! Thanks for posting
Fantastic upload, hope Ned Kelly sees this film.
Thanks again for this video.
Thanks for the upload John, nice bit of transport history captured there...👏👏👏👍👍
The days when a 143 was king
The Mighty 143
Aye but 141 was better
My late dad drove the 141, 142 & 143 for Northern Irish hauliers back through the very late 1970’s until the mid 1990’s and he always said that his 143 450’ was the best truck that he ever drove for sheer pulling power but the 141 375’ & 142 420’ ran the 143 very close for pulling power on the long drive down on a Saturday night through to Sunday afternoon from Stranraer to Dover starting off on the dreaded A75 from Stranraer lol
@@mickeyshone5229 aye the 450 took some beating ive had 2 450s in my time and once u learned how they work they great machines . Not much room in them climbing over the middle bit if u needed the bunk . But for driving them very little comes close .
I enjoyed the job back then but not now! I think that says it all. Great video👍👍
fantastic film, some happy memories watching the irish boys on Hilton park thanks for the film, looking forward to part 2.
Great video! Love the old 143s and the odd MAN etc Brings back many memories, thanks for upload
Great vid. I was 14 back then & dreamt of getting behind the wheel of these. Unfortunately not managed it, but great to watch!
Brilliant video, not many video cameras around then which makes it very special now to see this, great memories. Look forward to part 2. 👌🏼👍🏼
Bloody Brilliant well done mate for posting this up.
Great video.thanks for uploading it.
Not a piece of plastic in sight fantastic video
Captured a marvellous time for trucking
Cracking video, great times and trucks that we’ll never see again.
Awesome rigs & operators.
all the best from Australia
Great video thanks for sharing it,👍
Another great upload 👍
Wow, that’s an interesting vid. Lots of old trucks. So many Irish trucks. Bloody hell Hilton park services was like Piccadilly Circus back then. Certainly not much time to get your truck backed into a slot. All skilled guys there, not much room for error. Nice one mate.👍🏻🚚
Having a 45 before the next shunt to Dover.
Absolutely brilliant video. To think I more than likely loaded them Alpine Express trailers for Dunnes stores Malaga. Great memories.
@What's App channel no mate I was the forklift driver at Sydney Coopers Dublin. We loaded you guys back then. You wouldn't get a match box into the trailer when we were finished. 😎
First lorry I ever drove was an old mk3 scannia. Love them,
Great footage
I remember painting some of them while working in McElvaney Motors
The other good transport cafe i used to go with my dad to when he drove the AA multicar transporter delivering the patrol vans to the depots was jacks hill cafe in towcester. Still there as far as i know and they still quite a busy cafe. Food was always good there too. Some memories seeing some good old real trucks plenty of power and pull anything
This footage is pure gold
Proper drivers back then not these wheel attendants they have these days older drivers with respect but todays ones are terrible
Great to see this footage well done
Not all of today’s drivers are tossers
Great vid well done 👍👋
This is great stuff mate. I remember them Irish wagons flying past me like i was in reverse! 😂👍
Back in the days of when trucks were trucks.. I remember working on these types as an apprentice body repairer and sprayer.. Seeing how different the old Volvo F12 and 16 looked compared to the new FH12 and 16.. And how there was still plenty of Fodens and ERF's in use.. No complicated electrics, no cheap plastics.. just good solid built trucks..
Notice all the 4x2's, how times have changed..
well not really, its much the same really. You can pick out the Brit (or NI) trucks as they are 3 axle tractors. All other EU countries allow 40 Tonnes on 5 axles so they use 4 X 2 with higher drive axle weights. Its only the UK that allows 44 Tonnes on 6 axles generally (although ISO containers run at 44 Tonnes in the EU) but with lower axle weights hence the 6 X 2 tractors.
And not a single green uniform in sight, lovely bit of old school trucks and proper drivers.
Ahh da good old days no need 2 carry a magnet just pull a fuse💪💪
Few quids worth of classics!!!
No wonder the 143 was a market leader every other truvk u seen back tben was a 143 450 most of the irish lads had them and nearly all the guys from aberdeenshire had one or more in their fleet . Even charles alexander the aberdeen company owned by tdg had a pair of 143 400s on the fish work . . Nice to see bains of tarves aberdeenshires old 143 all these lads from this era knew how to work . 100 hr week no problem no lightbars or fancy stuff on these working machines . Love hearing the old v8 go up through the box these 143s werent cheap . I mind around this time a friend pricing one from reliable vehichles in aberdeen fae mr mchardy the sales lad . Hundred grand and change for a tag axle 143 450 on steel springs air was another 2.500 grand so he ended up getting a p cabbed 113 360 tag on air he still was miffed that the boss wouldnt buy a 143 as it was too dear
Class 👍👍
అద్భుతం ( Wonderful )👍👌
Brillant👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Not one single auto
Some cracking old school scanias 🚛🚛🚛
My dad used to have one of those scania units when driving for Thomas Allen haulage in wendsbury about 1991
Amazing, brings back memories, hilton park was the second stop for tay after Penrith truckstop and then the watford gap and then Smithfield market. I see the late Isobel Millar in Joe Millars centurion 500 Scania. I had a couple of 143's pulling for the famous Ross Reid of Interland Transport fame in those days. The crack was good there were no speed limiters men were men and Scanis's were real trucks then.
Love your Video, Were Scania trucks cheap at that time becuase im impressed with all those Scania's.Thanks,Keith,Malta
Nice to see one of the late Freddy Fosters Scania with a Ferrymaster trailer, might have been me.
bonjour les artiste moi en 1994 je rouler pour F R T en inter j'avais le 705 ces de bon souvenirs souvent bloquer les dimanche sur la route s"étais comme sa la vie de routier au long court salut a tous les ami de la route Daniel F R T 705
Brings back memories that but Wasn't all at hilton park
A little bit at the Hollies in description
Looks like some of the video was taken at the Hollies Cafe at Cannock
Old School last dance badass truck and men.
The good old days when parking was either free or a fiver , not like nowadays £30 plus 😡
And Behold not one from Romania
For some odd reason I just find the early 1990s the best times ever I think the reason is due to the fact that our society was so civilised unlike today and it was the end of the Cold War with democracy expanding and I just want to find out what Britain’s roads where like at that time after the ussr dissolved
Great video sadly some companies no longer here
Would love to see some videos from inside a distribution centre from the early 90s
wow 4 x2s and scania ruled the roads
Kurła kiedyś to było...
Bellissimi scania 143
Some of this vid looks like the Hollies on the A5.
Back when you could get a space, not full of foreigners you see and did you see the guy watching him back you would never get that nowadays, yeah that's when the job was worth doing
Great memories great trucks and great times, but sadly at a time when the industry was about to go through massive changes and not for the better , now look at it shit lorries, clueless steering wheel attendants and transport staff 😞
Series 1 FH was brand new that year..
Good old days before speed limiters and rolling road blocks
International Diesel service A5 hollies truck shop.
It looks like a Scania Volvo parking lot cool trucks wonder if some of the trucks still servive
Bet them Irish lads were on there 5th taco card.. happy days back then..
I was in that video . about 3mins into it . the guy in the black waistcoat walking across the car park. ....
Seen ya
@@tonisherkan8027 are you on facebook?
No,
@@tonisherkan8027 pity i would have liked to be intouch with you
Wasnt too many places you weren't Danny
Carna Transport still going strong just a few miles up the road from me.
Well, the weather hasn't changed since then.
All the paddys have been took over by the foreign lot.. sad really i go over to Ireland often and the eastern block lot are getting more and more
Little Eastern European trucks back then
Would love to use this in a documentary I am making. Please let me know how best to contact you for permission, thank you.
The best days of trucking, before trucks lost their gear sticks and trucking became woke.
Glad to have been there.
Thease guys could drive thease beauty's think the hardest thing must have been parking at the services than delivering the loads they had the fun of changing gears them selfs not like us now
O, my God... 25 years ago... It's a terrible... Spirit of time
In 84 it was dafs erf and aecs.lol
Tidy blind side reversing of walsh western at 9.26
What a excellent video just ruined with a few vulvas and german trucks, no supprise with the f12 at 8.43 with the cans on the chassis more than likely water for the kettle engine on the boil
I migliori camion del mondo il 143 450
Sam Patterson had that MAN on demo before Ewing’s bought it v10 roadhause a flying machine
All trucks have an identity here,,non of this “ logistics” and “solutions” rubbish you see firms putting on there plain white Renault or merc 3 year lease truck......
Dan the Man or spedition
Today only trucks are different on this services. Asphalt is still the same.
I don't understand, why Britain stop in 90' with road infrastructure.
Because all money now goes in benefits to illegal immigrants.
Nice footage, but not a single british manufacturer lorry to see!
Europeans b like, we have the best looking trucks in the world, Australians and Americans b like, hold our beers.
No Renault Trucks😕
Never mind 5:48
Great days for me as an owner operator - Scania 113.360 Topline 6 x 2 tag axle running fridges to Spain. The Irish lads were a hard working bunch, mad as a box of frogs but would never leave you in trouble. We will pass over the multiple tacho discs but hey they had a long way to go. I went on to operate 5 trucks of my own (MAN 22.422 Roadhaus and an FH12).
So sad that while we all just traded and drove trucks and had a few laughs along the way in the EEC we now have the EU giving us a hard time because we wish to leave and sadly the useful idiot in Dublin Veradkar is leading the way. Every one of these trucks and every one since and until a couple of years ago never paid a penny road tax or bought any diesel here but if the EU keeps up this attitude we will leave with no deal and the Irish lads won't be using British roads to get to the EU. Politics eh?
Great memories. Some of your facts are untrue. Most of the trucks are British registered so the road tax and fuel were bought somewhere in the UK. The Irish registered trucks filled up on the way home so had enough to get them back to Dover before they filled again.
@@damienleonard7251 Oh so you know my facts are untrue? Interesting... well I have just watched it again and most were Irish but still what do I know. A couple of Cloggies and some UK lads working for Interland on port to port transfers. Basically if they were 4 X 2 they were Irish or foreign. The McCullas were NI trucks and 6 X 2.
I guess you didn't read the part where I was referring to Irish trucks 2nd paragraph 3rd line down? And back in the day no one filled up in UK on the way back. If we came from Germany we filled up at Luxembourg or from Italy and Spain we filled up in Calais supermarkets for cash. Basically half the price of UK diesel. Of course there were always the tilt trailers with false fronts filled with red diesel.
@@1chish what do you deem to be an Irish truck.. ?. I was there the day it was filmed. I was driving the Translate Turbo star, I'm Irish, and I know how we operated. At one stage we bought all our fuel in the UK.. but that changed over the years, as the laws changed all over Europe and we were allowed to carry our fuel from country to country. In other words, we didn't have to declare it at the borders.
@@damienleonard7251 Blimey I have to explain that? Its a truck registered in Eire OK? A truck registered in Northern Ireland being British. Not sure where this is going but hope this helps. And yes I was fully conversant with a 'Tankschein' and why we refuelled coming OUT of Germany not going in. Not sure the French or Italians gave a shit either way. Mind they were interested in the 50 Franc not folded in the Permit so they didn't stamp the green copy ...
@@1chish I was pointing out that we all paid for fuel in the UK regardless of what part of the island we came from.
Irish hauliers have always been well on top of the job. Underpowered trucks just wont do the job.as you can see nothing slow here.
I was born
в Англии !?
Trucker myself, totally awesome trucks here. And drivers with gears., yeah gears. No poxy chauffeur driven autos. And two things stand out in this video one good one bad. 1 actual parking 🅿 for British, Scottish and Irish reg trucks good point whey hey. no 2. Bad point. No greggs ohh f*ck.. Off to hollies for a nice slice of waitresses 😉
Yellow scania taking up 2 bays bad parking 😑
Aye snowflakes need not apply for drivers jobs back then these guys were true drivers these guys put in a week what some folk wouldnt do in a fortnight . Aye and be there saturday for the boat across to the bean then down to dover tip monday morning back home wednesday morning wed night loaded and away back doon the road . No fancy light bars and marker lights just suitcase on the bed and keep er lit . Those trucks could tell some stories i bet . But as allways what happens on tour stays on tour am i right or am i right lol .
Volvo the better trucks
