I remember getting those Jo Han kits back around that time also. They were always a bit cheaper than other brands. I still have an unbuilt Plymouth Fury police car I need to build some day.

Awesome video! I really have to thank you for making this video. The nostalgia factor for me is over the top! I recently got back into modeling after an almost 35 year hiatus. I picked up a couple of these Johan Torino kits recently as well as 1 of the MPC Torino kits.
Back in the day my local hobby shop in Sayre PA had a caboose on the side of the shop with all their kits in it. It was literally full of Johans in 1987! Back then I picked up the Johan 1964 Polara Re Charged kit and the Sox And Martin 71 Cuda. I built them and still have them. My buddy and I at 17 years old used to go in there and drool over the Johan kits, there were just so many different kits that they had. He and I both pumped gas at the local Mobil station making $3.35 an hour minimum wage. Paying for car insurance and upkeep on our 1:1 vehicles while in high school didn’t leave us much disposable income.
I really wish I’d have bought more of those Johan kits back then.
As a little bonus for you my buddy bought one of the Johan Ramrod kits back then. He recently gave me the built up kit in the original box!

So yes that was the timing chain cover for the cammer. The cammer was a true hemi but the boss 429 was somewhat of a semi hemi and not a true hemispheric combustion chamber. Great video

I remember that kit, had it in my hands in my youth. Never got around to buy it. I actually enjoyed Jo-Han kits, the bodies and engine detail was usually blueprint correct. And a 12 year old was not worried about the promo style chassis. Engine and body caught the eye, not the bottom. And when it comes to flash...
Well, just a pinch between the cheek and gums and I are good to go 👍

I used to live in Radford VA in the early 90s and was on racing teams at the track there. Ronnie was killing it there in Late models. I was friends with a couple of his crew guys. Talked to Ronnie sometimes. Great guy. I loved that video they did with him. I did a model of one of his cars. I'd like to do one again. Too bad no one does decals. I would love to go check out his restored Pontiac the next time I'm there.

I did videos on stripping the paint and found that one of the colors in the two tone scheme was the beige/white plastic. I love the Jo-Han kits. Mostly because they made some classic AMC models. (My dad was a dyed-in-the-wool AMC stallwart.) I have a couple of their Marlin and Ambassador kits. I also have quite a few Jo-Han AMC dealer promo models. Including a model of the first car I ever bought (used in 1973), a 1964 Ambassador 990 station wagon.

Yes the timing cover , your asking about , is for the 427SOHC engine ... JoHan put the Boss and the SOHC engines in the same kits ... like the Maverick&Comet kits , but they used the same engine block ( maybe even the heads too ) which we know is incorrect ... but as kids we didn’t know OR care ...
Ya I remember in the late 80’s , in Toronto , buying the Maverick , Comet and Torino ( ya the snap one ) fo about $5 each ... now I pay 50-100$ each if I’m lucky !

Good to see (hear?) you finally feeling better, Matt 😊 Really enjoyed this one!! I had 1 of those in the 00's, it was lost in a house fire in 2011 😞 The only time I'd ever heard of it was on DW's car, never saw a can of it until now, lol! I'd love to see you build that DW car (I'd like to build it too). Thanks for showing us the great photos of the old cars and when I get a chance I want to make two more of those Buds race cars. Thanks for showing them again. I was able to get a JoHan Torino off Ebay a few months ago. I was lucky because it was listed under "Antiques" instead of "Hobby/Model Kits" and it snuck through unnoticed. I only paid about $40 for it. I did it up in the 1972 livery which was school bus yellow and unsponsored. Davis Pearson debuted it at Riverside, but left after the Atlanta race to join the Wood Brothers. LeeRoy Yarbrough then drove it at Darlington but was then replaced by Donnie Allison for eight races and finally Dick Brooks took over for it's final season appearance at Rockingham. It was as fun build, but I do prefer the Isaac MPC kit.

Like you said, you really never knew what you were getting when you opened a Jo-Han kit. The three things that put me off of them was 1) the colors of plastic in the kit 2) flash, but on the other side of that coin taught me flash wasn’t a bad thing- short shot parts and 3) some of the parts in the kit didn’t go with the subject of the kit ie: the cammer motor not the small block ect. But for the most part they were unique kits and are missed within the hobby.
Great video Luka! Glad you are well down the road to recovery!!!

1st: What the hell is your name? Luka or Matt? Maybe I missed something somewhere. Maybe I'm trippin' on my cancer meds? But right now this ol' fart is confused.😮
    Now to the Torino.
I've always been fond of Johan kits. Not so much their oh so common promo style chassis. But I always felt the bodies were quite good and the engines...wow. No blob for a carb. Never an intake manifold with a bumpy blob for a molded on distributor cap and an even worse carb. My Torino is molded in that funky cream. I wanted to build the Bud Moore car as raced at Riverside in both 72 and 73. I was an Official at those races. Tech Inspector and Wreck Impounds for the support sports car races and track crew flagman for the NASCAR races. One of those was the weekend I graduated high school in 73. The Torino was in RC Cola markings. In spite of the small block engine was a contender. At the time I was drinking RC most every day. I was familiar with the Bud Moore team and George Folmer from Trans-Am and George was a driver I rooted for in Can Am and F5000 as well. Good guy. I only ever found 1 of the kits back then and its decals were messed up. The Dana 60 would be good for a Mopar of the day. I got a real close up look at one during that June 73 race when a couple cars, one of them a Charger, tangled, went off course and hit the bank right above me with me having been bodily thrown into the drainage ditch at the bottom of the bank as the Charger bounced off and the other went up over the top and hit several parked cars. Oil pan, headers, driveshaft, rear axle and fuel cell passed by my nose within inches with an explosion of dirt. Almost forgot entirely about my date the night before that I took to Magic Mountain. I was trying to buy one of the MOC kits more recently and 2x it was out of stock. Never did get one. I expect the chassis in that kit to be the same as the other MPC NASCAR kits of the day like the Woods Bros Cyclone and Petty Plymouth. Maybe some day I'll get after getting the parts I want to build the 2 years of that Torino. Right now I'm building Hot Rods, Gassers and Altereds.
