  • Kelvin Kiptum made an unquestionable contribution to the world of running, particularly after he set an astonishing record at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Following Kiptum’s death NBC 5 talked to the man who brought him to Chicago, Carey Pinkowski, the executive director of the marathon.

"Wasn't a household name..." sort of. I mean, he is as close to a household name as any long distance athlete. Those who even slightly follow running would recognize his name. He is the world record holder in the marquee distance running event of the world. Hundreds of millions, at least, around the world would recognize his name.

Yes, for those of us who are athletes or at least, follow this great sport. Unfortunately, great runners are rarely highlighted by the media if they don't achieve or are close to achieving something groundbreaking like a sub-2 hour marathon (even sub-2 hour 26.2 time trial, like Kipchoge).
How many people outside of our sport know the likes of Joan Benoit Samuelson, Deena Kastor, Des Linden, Kara Goucher, Meb Keflezighi, Paul Tergat, Bernard Lagat, Haile Gebrselassie, etc. (all of whom are decorated, amazing runners) compared to someone like Michael Phelps or Lionel Messi or Michael Jordan? It's really because of who the media chooses to talk about based on what is made popular by public interest, unfortunately.
I'd be surprised if the 2 reporters knew who Carey Pinkowski was talking about when he mentioned Khalid Khannouchi.

Distance running fans and runners knew this young, brave, talented legend would certainly go below 2 hours in a competitive environment. He was on course to achieve it sooner rather than later. I believe he would have done it at least a couple of times.

1.59 flat I reckon, 1.58 flat is probably not physically possible, but I could've seen him sneak under 1.59 - I don't think anyone will break his record in our lifetime even though it wasn't a fraction of his potential

Your kidding yourself if you think Kipchoge had anything to do with this. The obvious answer is always the most likely. Kiptum was infact juiced up to his eyeballs on drugs. His blood was thicker than custard. He had a heart attack or stroke while driving and his doping has caused his own death along with his coach. just wait for the autopsy report to be leaked.
