Trains at: Clapham Junction, BML/SWML, 17/04/21

- An excellent afternoon session spent at Clapham Junction on the South Western Mainline and Brighton Mainline where we see countless services from South Western Railway, Southern, Gatwick Express, London Overground and freight from Freightliner. So completely ignore everything I said in my introduction!!
The Freightliner 66 was heading from Hoo Junction to Wokingham to drop off new sleepers for the line running up to Reading where the line had been closed for the weekend from Wokingham to Reading to allow for engineering work to take place.
I thought I would give Clapham a try whilst the nation is in the slow process of coming out of the national lockdown to see how what is usually an insanely busy railway station is coping, especially as the TOC's aren't running back to a full timetable yet.
I also came here because my initial station that I wanted to go to wasn't accessible to me on this day as no trains were calling there.
There's a rich and varied history to come with this station and even though there were lines passing through the site there wasn't a physical station here for a good few years. Before the railway reached Clapham the area was rural and oddly enough specialised in Lavender. Hence why you have Lavender Hill in the area. In 1838 the London and Southampton Railway became the London and South Western Railway which then proceeded to open a line from Nine Elms to Woking. That was the first railway line through the area. The next line to operate was the line from Nine Elms to Richmond which opened in 1846. Two years later Waterloo was opened which then made Nine Elms redundant. In 1860 the line to Victoria was opened and three years later Clapham Junction was opened and was done as a joint venture between the London and South Western Railway, the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway and the West London Extension Railway as an interchange for all of their lines.
When the station was built much of the Battersea area was heavily industrial and the Clapham area was fashionable (insert joke here) this actually worked in the railway companies favour as they all wanted to try and get the more upper and middle class people from the surrounding areas to come to Clapham. Which did work for a while, unfortunately there was a negative that was to come with all this. Because of the fact that the Battersea area was heavily industrial it meant that a lot of under privileged people at the time came into the area for work. Because of this the local population sky rocketed and went through the roof. In 1840 the local population was just touching 6000 and by the time 1910 decided to say hello the population was knocking on the door of 168,000. The area was full of slums which was eventually replaced with council housing by 1975. And they say the area has improved...........

Another great video - the station looks almost tranquil, at least for Clapham Junction's standards!
South Western Railway are replacing the Class 455 and Class 456 with the Class 701 Arterios which are coming into service from the end of this year. And the Class 707 Desiro City are to be cascaded to Southeastern. With the Class 455 & Class 456 to be scrapped and some Class 455s could go to Southern.
Another intriguing and enjoyable video. Never been to Clapham Junction, given the current situation I can't see me getting there either.

Southern are using Gatwick Express train at the moment. Gatwick Express are not operating due to upgrade works at Gatwick Airport.

The engineers train hauling sleepers might be going to Wokingham (4 stops up from Reading towards London Waterloo, Guildford, Redhill, and Gatwick Airport), as there are replacing the sleepers over many weekends between Wokingham and Reading
How you get those middle unit numbers amazes me. Was there yesterday and sometimes its impossible to see them. I in fact prefer it how it is now. At full capacity the place is just To busy !!
Also, southern are running a service 2 an hour to Brighton using the Gatwick Express liveries. Also, Southern uses the Gatwick Express liveries to Eastbourne/Ore and Littlehampton as well. Trains to Littlehampton are not dividing at Haywards Heath and the Ore trains are dividing at Eastbourne, not Haywards Heath.

Fun fact the reason why some 455 carriges don't look the same as the others is because they are ex class 508 carrgies from the days before they were shorterned to 3 car sets

Yeah they're also running single GX units on the Brighton to Hastings route too.

What did the station staff/etc say to you about filming there? When I went about 3 days later they claimed filming was banned even though I later rang NR and they said it was fine.

Maybe Gatwick Airport Station is being upgraded to enable it to serve LNER Azumas, since they’re longer than even the 12-coach Thameslink 700s.
To keep Gatwick express fleet running southern are using them on some of them on their services also great northern will be using them when the class 365 are taken out of service this is until replacement for the 365 are found
