    my cockatiel was so naughy and playful and affectionate, we never kept him in his cage unless for night time. He was definitely on the quieter side though, he wasn't exactly quiet, but definitely not noisy, You're so right about the soothing beak grinding, I've fallen asleep to that more times than I can count when he did that right on my shoulder.

    Wait then my hand raised baby cockatiel has been happy since the day I got him? Wow at first I thought they were regular behaviors. I got him a month ago and he’s warmed up a lot to me he even bonded with me :)

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 3 lety +7

      Hey Itz!
      Don't forget I'm using "Happy" as an anthropomorphic term here! Parrots think and feel differently to us, BUT all of these behaviours are signs of contentment and the closest we can get to defining happy in them!
      They are regular behaviours too! (at least in cockatiels that are well cared for anyway!) Seeing cockatiels beak grinding, asking for pets, singing/chatting and generally being active and curious is just nice!
      It's awesome that he's bonded with you! Hand reared babies are definitely more likely to bond with us humans, but you can form bonds with non hand reared birdies too!

      I recommend getting a baby as well, but don't avoid the older ones!! I have one who was untamed, the original owner had kept her locked in a cage for a few years because she found out she was allergic to the dust that my poor tiel made. She would hiss the first few days, but now she's more cuddly than a dog, and waddles like a fat hen after me when I do things around the house 😂

    I was watching this and I glanced across to my 23 year old ancient cockatiel. She was fluffed up, one foot up and grinding her beak :D. Interestingly enough, she has never shown any interest in toys. However, she does have her own computer keyboard (with the electronics removed)- she got jealous of me spending time on my 'toy' and wanted one herself! She is generally only noisy when demanding head tickles or summoning her human slaves for some attention!

    I got a cockatiel that wasn't hand fed. He's 13 weekes old, wings were clipped, I've had him for about a week. The first 2 days he's been silent, he did watch me in the watch tv next to his cage and I talk with him and whistle too. Then the last 3 days he gotten more active and chirpy. He doesn't nip or anything but he avoids my hands when I go in his cage to feed him. But he doesn't seem bothered by it being next to the cage. He also is very chirpy. And he paces alot. I was worried that, because he may want to get out of his cage which i let him. I just get him to perch on an extra wooden perch to bring him in or out. He never bites or hissing still always chirping even when a hand is in his cage. I was just worried that the pacing was a sign of territorial, boredom, or excitement. Do you know what pacing, chirping, and making wings in a heart shape could mean? Is he happy, bored, or territorial?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 4 lety +6

      Hey Mark! Thanks for your comment!
      Heart Wings are normally a display of some sort, either to impress or defend territory!
      Pacing is usually a sign of excitement, anticipation or occasionally frustration, although in your case I don’t think it’s the last one!
      Chirping is usually a good sign! It can mean all sorts but usually a noisy bird is a healthy one lol

Has different noises for wanting a drink of water, has a "what was that?" noise if she's startled, and has developed a general "chatting to Dad" chirp and will sit on my shoulder and have a chat to me while I make my morning coffee.

    Mine's not a fan of toys unless it's a foraging toy (even when empty or there's food out, I think she likes moving it). Happy in other aspect though. Will ask for pats and then preen my beard in return.
    I've also noticed mine will stand on one foot and stretch her wings out as though she's doing her own form of thai chi or yoga.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 3 lety

      Hey Angus!
      Conure/cockatiels love digging around/foraging, especially females. Pickles goes crazy on the floor of her cage or in her foraging tray moving and chucking bedding around!
      That's cute with the beard preening! Obviously means she sees you as a flock mate.
      The wing stretching is pretty normal too, they tend to do it on one foot so they can stretch it out fully!

    I've recently lost my cockatiel, Niki. She showed signs of disease, as being always in the corner of the cage, sleeping.
    Sometimes she'd go to my shoulder and sleep in there.
    She couldn't eat most of the seeds, but she did eat the tiny ones. And she had excessive hunger.
    I knew she was sick, but no one believed me. I gave her a supplement, but seemed like she was sick for a long time, before I even adopted her.
    2 days ago, I've adopted two males. A baby that can eat on his own but doesn't have all the feathers grown yet and another one that seemed pretty healthy and active (Strong as well, as he tried attacking me once)
    So, the baby sleeps a lot during the day, and I'm worried that he may have gotten the first sign of disease. Should I check him up and keep him in a separate cage until the results come?

    I have 3 cockatiels which one is the Babur of the other 2. Which they had 4 ans Charlotte the one I have was rejected by her siblings and the parents. She was very weak when she was born and was a few days behind the others. This has been about 9 months ago . The sibling made her bloody one day I thought they gouged her eye but they did not I just couldn’t see her eye because of the blood. I went online to talk to vet and tell him about . She also has health problems and is much better over the months . She keeps losing feathers around her eyes . They water and the feathers get hard and fall out then she will get better and be just beautiful for a while. But she has not been in a cage since that happened about 9 months ago . She is with me all the time except when I go to work. My husband is home all the time. She sleeps in a basket that I have hanging up on my wrought iron canopy . I have clothsline run across the top and have some toys hanging and a swing. She use to sleep on me , she would not sleep anywhere else! But now she loves her basket and she hisses at me if I try to put my hand in it. She letting me know that is hers and just hers!
    I know her moods when she is mad at me she turns her back side to me, when she is just irritated in bad mood she flicks her wings at a fast pace trying to hit me . I put her on the floor when she does that . And she will settle a few min after that because she does not like to be on the floor. I am very attached to her and she goes in the car with me and most of the time she really likes it and some times she gets uptight and nervous. So I don’t take her as much. I can’t get her to play with toys ? She did play in my jewelry box for a while ans then she got bored or over it. I want to teach her to bowl or play basket ball but anytime I try something she ignores me. Her parents we got from a friend and they want to do nothing. They don’t like to be held and the boy Fred will bite hard. I do put gloves on amd get him anyway and hold him for about 10 min and talk to him and pet him. Then I will put him down. Ethel his mate will let me hold her ans she will get in my shoulder but she wants to be with Fred and him with her ans you take one of them
    Out of the room and the other one is going crazy and screaming. The other owners never did much with them
    And they never had babies till we had them about 4 years. I helped feed the babies when they turned 8 weeks. They were super good parents but I could see it was taking a toll on them so I got some baby powder and started feeding them which I’m glad I did or Charlotte might not have lived and they wouldn’t be trusting humans like they do. I think the parents to old to change much. Even though Fred bites and screeches running away from when I get him and hold him. After a while he not very hard to get. So I know he is ok with me

    My bird hates toys, she loves to watch the birds and lizards in the backyard, or if she's inside the house, loves to sit on my shoulder, her fan spot on the fan itself or puffed up at the end of my bed till I move and suddenly flies after me. I've spent at least $70 or more on different toys and she hates them, doesn't wanna touch them, or near them half of the time etc but according to this video is incredibly happy, maybe she's like me, happy to relax and sit watch the world go by etc

      A pair is better as they have a partner and friend of their own species to be friends with. It's a bit of a misconception that pairs don't bond with people if they are kept together. Our two boys are happy with us!
      One small factor though, if you get a male/female pair they may breed or get territorial! So if you can get a same sex pair if it'd work better for you.

    Our cockatiel does many of the behaviors that you described, but he won't make happy chirping. (He does grind his beak.) In fact, he gets annoyed when anyone whistles and he's never once mimicked us. He also doesn't love his toys although he does interact with his world. He's never caged and he always wants to be with us, but he sometimes won't make a single chirp for over an hour. We worried that he was lonely, so we watched another bird for a few days to see if he would socialize. The other bird was social and nice to him, but he showed no interest in her. He didn't seem to mind her being social, but he did not participate, and his only reaction was to eat more than usual. How do we get him to sing?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Matthew,
      Thanks for your comment! The first question I have to ask is: Are you sure he isn't a she? Does he exhibit any other male behaviours like "Heart Wings" (wings spread and marching/singing) or tongue clicking? (you can see these behaviours in another of my vids if you aren't sure.)
      Regarding the toys, some parrots need to be trained to interact with toys or they aren't sure what to do with them! Others just aren't keen on them, or need a specific type of toy to play with (for example Pickles our Conure loves chewing toys, but finds foraging toys boring)
      My partner Sophie has a video on her channel about how to do this!
      Regarding the interaction. It's possible he's just very bonded with you and so doesn't see other birds as decent companions. They are very much like people, they like who they like and it takes a while to get used to other people/birds sometimes!
      Sadly there isn't any way you can make a bird sing if it doesn't want to. You can whistle to them, play music or other bird sounds for them to imitate etc.
      But if they don't want to or aren't male it's just the way they are!

    • @bartdikkerd2255
      @bartdikkerd2255 Před 3 lety +1

      It might be just your cockatiel's personality. If he doesn't have any health issues or stress then it's just her/his personality. Can't do anything about it.
      Also, females are much more silent compared to males, so maybe? Well, even if it's a male, there are exceptions, it's just that it's more common for males to be more noisy than females.

      Petting takes a fair bit of trust/time and some cockatiels don't really enjoy it from humans. It really depends on the individual bird.
      Chirp wise, I don't think there is a sad type of chirp. Usually if a bird is sad they don't make much noise at all!

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Před rokem +1

      Beak trimming is definitely on the list of videos to do!
      One of the easiest solutions is encouraging them to wear it down themselves by providing lots of chewable toys. Soft woods like Balsa, yukka and sola are all quite useful for this. Harder woods can work but cockatiels can get bored of them quickly as their beak's often won't go through them.
      If he isn't keen on chewing toys you can train the behaviour too! (videos about this on both me/Sophie's channel)
      If it's really bad you can try and file it down but that'd take some training too as restraint to do so isn't advised.

      So, like you said you want it to be a safe and fun place for her!
      The easiest method is giving her a treat and obvious que whenever she goes home. For example, you put her in, give her a treat and say "go home"
      You can also try the in and out game. So if you put her in, get her right out again and do it at random intervals. This will make it less of a chore for her to go in as she won't think she will be stuck in there!
      Also, I don't know your set up but maybe more chewable toys!

      @TheParrotTeacher  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Hano,
      I'll start with the one I can't do much with. Mites sounds like a big issue. Some people recommend that you treat the entire house as once they are there, they are there! Also be sure to investigate the treatment you're using carefully to make sure it is bird safe. You could consult a vet for more advice on this!
      It sounds like he is pretty attached to you, which is good for bonding. It also means that you training him would be easier. He likely calls for you as he is calling for you as a flock mate and is worried about where you are. It's also possibly separation anxiety.
      I have lots of videos on bonding, step up training and general training that might be worth you watching! There's a cockatiel playlist if that's easier!

      Plucking is usually a sign of stress or a vetinary issue (it can also be caused by lots of other factors), however screaming can mean multiple things.
      There sounds like there could be lots going on here, so it would be difficult for me to give a decisive response in a comment.

We’ve been noticing at night ~ a couple hours before bedtime she is sounding cranky. She or he 🤷🏻‍♀️ paces and struts about on her perch and sounds like she is screaming very angrily. Do you have an idea about this? I’m thinking she’s tired or possibly hungry....I actually just saw your mounting video and we do believe this might be the cause. Our bird only started behaving weird at night recently.

      Hey Gr8fulgirl!
      That sounds awesome, if so she's likely mostly a content little birdie!
      Have there been any changes in the house recently near her cage? Is she getting enough sleep in darkness?
      Pacing can mean a few things, it can mean excitement, attention seeking or stress. If she's screaming too, it'd narrow it down to attention seeking or stress/annoyance.
      At her age it could possibly be moulting, or hunger as you suspect, or some signs of hormonal behaviour. (My partner Sophie has a great video on it if you want to learn more about it)
      Our new rescue bird does something similar, but it's mostly when he's a little unsure what's going on or the TV is on before he settles down to relax.

    I try my very hard to get them comfortable but I think that they may be feeling cold or hot and that's why they are creating so much noise. They literally scream.

      If you've just got the little guy it may be they are settling in still! I have lots of other videos on cockatiels that might be useful!

    Hi! i currently have a question,
    I have a female cockateil bird and she like to be with me almost always, been a month since i got her (march 27) but i didnt get her a cockateil companion because my parents are allowing me to get 2, no matter how much i convinced her. will she be happy in the long run without a proper 'teil companion?

      Hey Heartcore,
      Having a pair of birds is always preferable, but there's nothing to say that a solo bird can't be happy.
      Just give her lots of space in her cage, lots of decent toys, lots of attention and training and plenty of time out of the cage! It's up to you to fill the gap of her companion!
      I'd suggest taking a peek at my other videos as I have lots of how tos!

    I wear a necklace around my neck which they find quickly. Do yours break a necklace at times?

      Hey there,
      Mine is sturdy enough that they just play with it occasionally. Some parrots will find jewelry and routinely destroy it though, so you need to be careful!

      @@TheParrotTeacher mine usually just nibble on occasion, but one old necklace was too hard to resist. But one latched on as soon as he saw it. Normally they have only a few seconds between their cage and the medicine table. My 25 year old got his beak around one corner as I neared the medicine area. I think his toenail caught the prize and broke it. They usually only nibble on my collar. The walk only lasts 2 seconds. But this was a junk jewelry and released as soon as it scared him. Now I only wear earrings that they can look at without touching. The broken chain startled him. Any good tips for making a play area so they try non chewable toys so they can have play time for those who get along well. They are all males from 29 year old to 2 that I took in from a lady who died. I have had these two about 20 years. All are male and have slowed down lately. I accept any suggestions. :)
