      I’d describe myself as a “recovering addict”. Rather than a “druggie”. Nitpicking, but… yeah… I have had that thought. Like, damn, I wish I’d tried DMT before I got sober. Whatever.
      I guess I see a big difference between being a recovering drug addict and being on a diet. There is nothing stopping a person trying to lose weight from eating whatever they want. All that is required to lose weight is to remain in a calorie deficit. Within that requirement, you can eat literally whatever you want. Whereas when you’re in recovery, you can’t do drugs at all.

      It's telling (and sad) when they see restricting unhealthy food as taking away joy from their lives.
      (Unhealthy) food should NOT be this important in your life that you can't imagine it not being a big part of your daily food & joy in life. The point of life is not to get happiness from food.
      The point of Food is to nurish your body and make you feel awesome so you can go and do other awsome things in life.
      If your diet makes you tired, sluggish, gives you headaches, makes your body uncomfortable, too big (or too small) for your environment.... it's time to look over WHAT you eat and how MUCH.

      @Datura981 Před 2 lety +30

      THIS. My body doesn't want to sleep. That doesn't mean I should follow my craving for staying up 30-35hrs before sleeping. Does it feel good? In the moment, until I'm exhausted the next day and feel too crappy to accomplish anything. My body craves the peace and haze of opioids. That doesn't mean I should follow my craving and try to acquire pills to take until my face falls off. Does it feel good? In the moment, until a few days later I want more. In the moment, until I start justifying to myself that this Ibuprofen-level pain REQUIRES opioids.
      "Living your best life" is not following the neanderthal-brain impulses, it's assessing those impulses and making an informed decision on whether they're good for you or bad for you. And in either case, good or bad, how much? Water is good for you, you may have the desire to drink a lot of water, but if you drink multiple gallons in a short period of time, you could seriously injure yourself. Does that mean water is bad? No, not at all. It means everything has its limit, even the things you need to survive. ESPECIALLY the things you need to survive.

      @@anma9217 True. I'm from Poland and women here tend to be very slim. If they gain weight, it's usually after having children and/or entering menopause (it's changing somewhat these days what with fast foods being more available and popular, but I'd still say if I see an overweight child, they tend to be boys). In all of my life (I'm 39 now) I've known all of 4 women who were on the heavier size around high school/uni (3 of them have lost weight since and have kept it down), and the 4th one is just built in the way where she has big breast and round hips and thighs (so if she puts on a bit of weight it always goes there), but a tiny waist and a slim face and neck, so she's clearly just not predisposed to be a waif - she's not really fat though, just very voluptuous. Men here tend to get overweight at a much earlier age, I guess due to the social pressure to "be a man and eat like a man, here's your pork knuckle and lots of beer!" Their type of fatness tends to be a big beer gut. The only person I've ever known in real life who was close to having the same type of obesity that I've seen in FA's from these videos was an American man.

      When I was in high school, I wanted to be an ESL teacher in South Korea. I was about 5’1” 152lbs. I realized after doing tons of research into the culture that I would be viewed as fat in east Asia, and that terrified me because I was already struggling with an ED. Where in the US I was just a bit overweight, midsize, about a size 14 or 16, Korean people would likely view me as just… big. And judge me as a fat American. It really put things into perspective for me and it was part of the reason I’ve lost like 45lbs since then

    • @LucianDarcWolf
      @LucianDarcWolf Před 2 lety +7

      There have been times in which I’ve regretted turning down offered food, however those times generally occurs when I’m sicker than my normal(by that I mean I’m pretty much always sick, my immune system is pretty junky and it’s hard to keep it boosted up as much as I’d like too but the things that help are expensive. My poor immune system directly impacts my food choices as much as a few of my medical conditions do), which limits my already limited diet down(and my current diet isn’t the best[not the worst either, but could be loads better too], and I know that some of what I eat does impact one of my conditions, but the exact diet I should have on the whole is really expensive and currently out of reach so I can only do it partly right now due to financial constraints). However the regret to not eating the food comes from having to turn down needed additional food that I otherwise can’t afford to have… But I know that it’s not the end of the world to have to turn it down because hey maybe my friend or family member can make it again when I am doing better and I can try it then. Ok so maybe that’s more disappointment than regret, still though I love food(especially when it’s made by family and friends cause they make some awesome stuff), but food isn’t the center of my world. I also am decently active(have to be or I won’t be able to walk due to progressive joint issues), so while I’m over my personal max weight for my(as dictated by my poor joints, more weight = more joint pain and issues), I know I can and will drop this little bit of extra weight.
      There’s more to life than food, and it’s ok to love/enjoy food it’s just not good or healthy have the kind of relationship with food like these folks do because it’s unhealthy not just physically but emotionally and psychologically as well.
      Oh gods, coming across foods that exacerbate issues or just make your tummy mad after eating them… that’s for sure a different type of regret… I tried something yesterday that just…..nope couldn’t even finish it because it was just so awful.
      TL;DR: I enjoy and love food(especially foods made by my family and friends), and I regret/get disappointed when I have to turn down food due to my being extra sick(due to my sucky immune system), because extra food helps out a lot to make sure I get enough food(especially if said food helps improve any of my conditions), but it’s not the end of the world when I have to decline said food.
      They on the other hand have a poor(and sadly so) relationship with food, and as such place food on a pedestal(almost like they warship an idol in some cases). It’s not just about their physical health being impacted by their poor relationship with food, but they also show emotional and psychological problems too with their unhealthy relationship with food. It’s sad, they really need help, but you can only help those who want help.

      Something similar here, in my 30s I was on antidepressants and at the same time I also started to have thyroid issues. And from having been within the upper range of normal weight to somewhat overweight with evenly distributed weight it made a huge difference when starting to touch the obese range of 30 BMI. I noticed some antidepressants was worse, and I was a fairly active person participating in sports both within team and excercising for myself but everything was hard and I was so tired. Just a brisk walk to the bus causing huffing and puffing or walking up stairs. And an ordinary 5 km easy run became a pain. It was awful, and excercising is very important for my personal wellbeing.

    I had a very interesting thought about fat acceptance today. They say that bodies come in all shapes and sizes, which is true, but they also say that someone being 100kg overweight is natural, due to genetics and is not their responsibility. But let's look at other species of animals. Horses for example. Some horses are smaller than others, some are bigger, some are taller, more muscular, skinnier. But there are NO OBESE HORSES IN THE WILD! This is the same for literally every animal in the world... except humans and our pets. I.e. the only animals who end up gaining body fat to a level which is out of the norm and causes causes problems are animals who are fed by humans! We live in a food environment which is not natural. Our food is designed in labs, processed into things that aren't even recognisable as food. Food is a way a lot of people make money, so obviously they'd want us to eat a lot! And we need to accept that and work with it, not give into it.

    • @nooneinparticular469
      @nooneinparticular469 Před 2 lety +51

      Yes! I also like to use animals as examples to refute the “stigma/medical malpractice/fat phobia causes health issues, not obesity!” point.
      Animals only become fat when overfed/underrun. Animals that are obese have more joint degeneration, higher chances of diabetes and some cancers, and shorter lifespans on average. There is absolutely no way those outcomes could be caused by fatphobia because pudgy dogs don’t experience societal pressure (on account of not understanding society).

To lose weight for herself, if there is a bodily joint that specially hurts because of her weight, or if she has some cardiac conditions or if she gets tired asap after waking up... And also to take it personally: if other people can, I can do it too! That's what I tell myself. Also 5 minutes before sleeping and after waking up I repeat to myself how my fat is melting naturally and effortlessly.
      For exercise, I walk 30 minutes daily and jump down a rope in my backyard for as many loops as I can. My personal mark is 100 loops! And also do 10 minutes of cardiac exercise with CZcams videos. For the diet, I am Hispanic so my food tends to be naturally healthy (gazpacho, menestra, fish in green sauce are some recipes I really recommend!), but maybe instead of 8 cookies when I want a treat, I eat 3 and I indulge in fast food just one meal in the whole week. If I can do with child portions in fast food chains, I treat myself to two meals weekly! It's very important to not eat healthy and clean all the time, just most of the time and still have space for your favorite food because when you eat all healthy and strict is when you have tentations to drop out. For example: I walked into my kitchen today and saw a box of Swiss rolls, I wanted to eat one but then I remembered the taste and satisfaction a sweet snack gives you lasts about a minute total IF that. Then after the sweet taste leaves I feel like shit again. So just think ahead that’s really all I do and it works for me

      @@Nettspendfan122 your comment inspired me :) I have a horrible sweet tooth but as I've hit my 20s I've realized its started to make me feel sick, make my teeth hurt, and just isn't as appealing sometimes. I went wild my first year in college, got fat (I'm 5'2" so it's not hard) and hated how my joints ached constantly from the waist down. I lost the weight but still dislike my body, I just hate exercise and depression makes it really hard to plan and cook. But I want to try and get healthier so that I can love how I look and feel good all the time!!
      I think being skinnier will make me happier because I will hopefully be in less chronic pain, have more energy, and just enjoy my body more than I ever have. Yet "fat activists" would tell me this is wrong. I still do like soda and things like candy on occasion, but I've cut down on them a lot. Like having sweets every day to maybe every two weeks, which I'm proud of.
      My goal this summer is to get abs and defined muscle on my arms and legs- not too much but enough to not feel weak. Sorry if this is all a bit of a rant for you but your comment really resonated with me today. Wish you the best! :)

I watch these Fat Tok videos and these women are out of breath just sitting there talking. They really think they can do the same amount of work for the same amount of time as smaller people?? If you can't work as long, you won't get paid for what you don't do.

    I am always baffled at these people who say to be on a diet in order to intentionally lose weight you’re going to have to feel starving all the time. I’m 4 months into a diet, lost 20lbs and have only felt that more primal level of hunger like 3 times so far and those had explainable reasons. It seems more psychological rather than physiological if you’re obsessing over food because you ate the equivalent to a slice of bread less for a meal.

If our population was bigger I’m sure we’d be right behind America in just how many obese people exist which is a real shame for both countries. It means access to quality food, having the time to exercise and sleep, living in a place that allows for quality rest and sleep, living in an area polluted or not, having a dangerous job or not, access to medical care etc etc.
    So basically it's very concrete physical stuff. And food is part of it.

It’s not oppression to point out how being obese will cause current & future health issues

    I kinda feel bad for virgie. She sounds like she has a serious food addiction.
    Like I watch what I eat, I try to eat fruits and veggies, not a lot of sugar, ect.. so I do "restrict what I eat" but I can't recall at any point a particular individual case of not eating. Like I know at times I haven't eaten sweets because I knew it wasn't good for me but I don't have a catalogue of "I didn't have a slice of cake at work during susies' birthday party" or "when I went out with my friend visiting from out of state I didn't order a sugary drink". Both of those are made up circumstances because I literally can't recall anything like that. I recall telling susie happy birthday and joe cracking a joke, or I recall my friend visiting and talking about her new job. Food doesn't play such a huge role in my life that I can remember individual cases. it seems extremely sad that so much of virgie's life seems to revolve around eating. Eating is just eating for me, if I'm hungry I'll grab something I feel like eating that's reasonably healthy if needed, and then I move on. I wouldn't even describe eating as a "joy", it's just kinda something that is there. I'll go out to eat with friends because of my friends, not a strange worship of food. If I couldnlt eat for one reason or another I wouldn't feel like I'm "missing this joy in life" because the joy comes from the people not the food.
    It's really sad. You should not be this focused on food, good or bad. You shouldn't stress over every upcoming meal or snack you have in life but you also shouldn't treat it like some glorious fantastic thing. It's like breathing, it's just kinda there.

I'll go out to eat on my own because I'm craving pho or whatever. HOWEVER. I have never looked back and grieved food that I didn't eat! That's just really bizarre. Eating good food is such a short-lived pleasure that it really just doesn't take up that much emotional space. I think Virgie needs to address that whether or not she restricts her eating, she is letting her life be controlled by food.

    So many of these arguments they make are just projecting their own insecurities. I prefer the way that I look and feel when I'm thinner but that doesn't mean I was afraid of or hated myself when I was fatter. It just got to a point where the extra weight was effecting my health negatively which is ultimately why I decided I needed to lose weight. To assume that the only reason for weightloss is due to insecurities or fear of being mistreated is just ridiculous.
    Also, edit to add because I just got to the end, I HAVE to restrict my food. I can't just intuitively eat because I end up eating too much and gaining weight which is very bad for me due to my back problems. Last year I gained too much weight and my back started to hurt so bad that I couldn't even walk normal. Getting up from bed and walking to my bathroom sink was a challenge. I had to go to physical therapy and lose weight for my back to feel normal again (and by normal I mean back to my baseline. I've always got a bit of back pain) So, good for them that they don't have to think about it and suffer any consequences in the moment but I don't have that luxury.

So yes, it’s thought that for example your socioeconomic status you are born into effects your health more than factors you can control. However, I still don’t think this means we shouldn’t *try* and control the remaining 30%. Like, we don’t tell people to smoke or binge drink alcohol every day just because “oh you can’t control 70% of the other factors!” It makes no sense.

    I love how Fergie talks about the job selection stuff without any references. I thought she had PhD in this fatness stuff. She should have at least 5 or 6 studies on tip of her tongue to prove her points

    Glad to have you back! I hope your break went well and was relaxing and fulfilling. I'm excited to see you tear into Virgie specifically, cause I believe she is a bad influence who spews misinformation about weight, diet, and such stuff. Drag her! Slay her! xD

    What I’m hearing, especially regarding the medical community (by which I was told for years my horrible joint pain was due to being overweight even though RA runs in my family - I finally got someone to listen to me and test appropriately and now I’m on chemotherapy for RA, but it’s too late because now I’m bed bound at 190lb due to the doctors who said I was just fat delaying my treatment) in particular, but also regarding the employment outlook of obese people, etc - are excellent arguments for why obese people need to lose weight. How does it make sense to put the onus 100% on society to change, when the power to eliminate these problems lies with each individual that has to deal with them?

    1960's young people were talking about stopping war and racism....now, so much controversy and discussions around the 'fat movement'...wtf...humans truly are regressing.

      Yes! Why can't these people campaign for exercise groups, healthy community meals and communal veg gardens so people don't get obese and enjoy being healthy.

    It's amazing how many of them are _obsessed_ w. food/eating, & yet despite that being the common behavioural denominator, they still flat-out deny that details of consumption may have something to do w. their _universal_ common denominator, which is being fleshier than medical science advises. And I know what food obsession looks like, as it is a problem I have long struggled w., myself - tho I went in the other direction, & have to wrestle w. my _fear_ of the power it has over me, resulting in my own reactive anorexia (in recovery now for 3 years).
    Not to be pot calling the kettle black, but I don't have to be healthy myself to be able to recognise the opposite extreme when I see it. But I'm a fatphobe, so what TF do I know, right? >.>

    I love your comparison to other physical deformities. I have SH scars everywhere (I’m not saying this for sympathy, it’s a good comparison) and get Icked out going to the beach and stuff. I get lots of stares and blatant comments from people close to me about how it makes me look ‘unstable’ or ‘gross’. You know what? That may not be nice, but it’s not a systemic struggle I’d compare to racism or homophobia. It’s not something I’d make a whole movement about claiming it’s everyone else’s fault but mine. (Let’s ignore the fact the original body positivity movement’s intention to be support for people with burns/scars/other deformities for the sake of the argument) It’s an even better comparison because you know what? I put those scars there. Fat people put the fat there themselves too. I won’t act like I’m being systemically oppressed because the deformities I’ve put on myself get shamed now and then.
    And to add another perspective, from someone with a stress disorder, the guilt tripping they give is fucking insane. They say over again “you’re not doing enough. You will never be doing enough. You’re a shitty hateful bigoted person” for not giving 100% of your mental energy to this fight when they KNOW people say the same shit about a million other topics can only push people to their breaking point. The entitlement to expect 1000% of someone’s time to be spent yelling about every social issue and you have the fucking nads to call that “just basic decency” and “the bare minimum”??

    the worst thing... dieting is not avoiding joy. It's a trade off? I enjoy looking certain way, I enjoy being comfy, I enjoy monkey parks (that one with walking on lines around trees?) I LOOOVE lunaparks and rollercoasters... I love so many things that might be impossible to enjoy if I was at certain weight... the cost of eating food I love in moderation is not that high... i can manage. I'm I'm glad I can eat the bag of chips from time to time and that's enough for me, don't need to eat two everyday to feel happy X"D

    My father-in-law lost fifty+ pounds because he was told if he didn’t he was going to get liver disease and that he was already in the earliest stages. He completely reversed the condition. How dare anyone say the only reason to lose weight is “I hate myself.” That’s absolutely insulting to anyone that’s done it for themselves and for their health.

    It reminds me of middle school and thinking everyone is looking at you and the world revolves around you. They seem to be stuck in that mindset while in reality no one cares. We’re too busy with our own lives and problems.
