Runrig - The Mighty Atlantic

- (Mara - 1995) Live at Stirling Caste - (Donnie Munro's Farewell) 1997.
------------
The roll of the wind
As we sail across the water
The roll of the sea
As we're taken through the night
The dimming lamp of day
Leaves the crimson foam and spray
Across the face of the mighty Atlantic
In this cradle we found love
In our lifetimes we were broken
By the spirit we were turned
Here we touched the hope divine
And in the rapture and the charm
Came the tranquil and the calm
On the rage of the mighty Atlantic
Deepest grave, supreme deceiver
Brave new worlds and cursed emotion
Let your people go, bring me a saviour
White doves rise above the ocean
Oh the brightness of the lights
As they stretch across the water
The excitement of the night
As we're carried through the seas
There's a welcome lies in store
The strongest arms I've ever known
In the homes of the mighty Atlantic
For the roll it is gentle
As the waves, they guide you over
Full new moon across the stern flag
Our different worlds in constant motion
The roll of the wind
As we sail across the waters
The roll of the sea
As we're taken through the night
I'm coming home it's late
And you know I just can't wait
For the shores of the mighty Atlantic
For the shores of the mighty Atlantic
For the shores of the mighty Atlantic - Hudba
This song just brilliant, it was made even better by the singing of Donnie plus the best lead guitarist ever, Malcolm Jones.
I cried buckets and buckets of tears watching the farewell tours, much as I love Bruce Guthro and think he's given Runrig a new lease of life and a different vibe, there are some songs which just need to be sung by Donnie and this is one of them, just epic.
Mirrigold the songs always sound the best with Donnie
Yep good with Donnie and Bruce's live version is very good as well as he sits down and explains how one of the ship's that left Scotland bound for nova Scotia unfortunately it was caught in a storm not to far from the coast and sunk the ship now stands in Bruce's home town harbor as a reminder of darker times when told us this in Glasgow barrowland I must admit I shed a tear or two as he sung
Donnie was always the man for me as well
What a soft, yet powerful song. It waves over you like the Atlantic itself. Close your eyes and you can smell, hear and feel the waves of the Atlantic crashing in...
That’s exactly how I feel with every listen! Especially at the very end with just the orchestra, it feels like you’re seeing an overhead shot of the ocean.
We will forever be grateful for Donnie and RUNRIG - may they never be forgotten for their impact on music and not only because of their images but also for their influence in broadening the use of the Gaelic language.
Malcolm Jones of Runrig has in my opinion been the greatest lead guitarist around for many years. Wonderful work by him in this video.
I say he should make the hall of fame
The guitar at the end is reminiscent of Dave Gilmore, at least to me anyway
@@patterjak Yeh, like Gilmore, Malcolm is a true master of the Fender Strat. They have that same magic touch as each other on the instrument
He is awesome
donnie is the best no one comes close
I got to sit with Malcolm Jones once on the bus in Edinburgh and pretty much told him that he’s one of the greatest guitarist ever! He’s freaking awesome and really creative.
Aye. Scotlands Dave Gilmour
I'm Irish and I love his song too. My hair stands on my neck when I hear it. My heart beats even though it's essentially Scottish..
There is no way you can listen to this song and not feel connected to this song, this band .... SCOTLAND!!!! My dad was born in Edinburgh and immigrated to USA. I LOVE SCOTLAND. I will ALWAYS be connected...RIP- DAD. I will carry your love of your native country on......xo
The man on this guitar also helped write the string section of music for the Scottish national phiormonic orchestra
What a stunning song. The touch of God upon us.
One song that always stills my world, warms my heart, and feeds my soul, anytime.
Malcolm Jones ,we are not worthy. What to play and when to play it and have the skill and touch to do so with such feeling means its more than man and machine at work.Truly awesome.
I heard Runrig in the late 70ties.
Fell in love with their music, bought as many off their cd's.
Love the Mighty Atlantic how Donnie's voice brings the waves off the ocean to live.
When Donnie left Runrig, it was great that Bruce took over.
Yes his voice is not like Donnie's, but he helped to save Runrig for all of us.
I have never seen the band live.
I was lucky 2 years ago, to go to Ayr to see him and his band.
wonderwel experience.
For those who keep whinning about Donnie is better than Bruce.
Stop thee are both great singer.
I've seen them live 7 times since Bruce joined.
brilliant song, I can just imagine the Atlantic in all her moods, soul stiring
The Mighty Atlantic & Going Home simply brill Donnie Munro simply unique voice .they,s songs you just cant get them out of your head best ever
class act ! and proud of my scots who recognised them as such .
This is such a boony, bonny song, full of Deep Emotion and when Malky does his solo, well, words cannane describe that for me. Super Group.
what can you say about runrig & the voice of Donnie Munro simply brill
Scotts+swedes=like a hand in a glove! Love it!
I get so p****ed off by people comparing Donnie and Bruce. Move on guys, Donnie Munro is a great singer, and frankly Bruce is one of my favourites ever.
last week i realised a long held dream to see Runrig live at the Warwick Arts Centre gig..and boy was it worth the wait!! This band are truly amazing in their talent as individuals and as an evolving group..their songs are rich and stirring..even to an Englishman!!The acoustic version of this track had what little hair i have left standing up on end..Cant wait to do it all again..you take the high road...
I just heard about this band about a week ago and can't stop listening to them. They are great!!

Thank you Runrig for this song means so much to me I am just back from Australia after visiting my daughter and family for the 1st time. Going out to see them all it proved to me there is nowhere like the Highlands and Scotland this song brings it all home to where your roots are. My roots are Sutherland so many of your songs brings it home to me.Shed many tears listening to your music.

Fantastic greatest band of the world. Runrig, Scotland.... I love this so much!!!!! Thanks for all that you doing.........
absolutely brilliant track
we were there!, it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. the sun set , the sound and the the figure of "brave heart" illuminated in the distance purely amazing. only thing was donnie was slating the English so we kept quite the whole concert ; )
Fantastic group
Well, Guthro never said he could! :-) I'm quoting Bruce's words for memory: "Donnie has an almost-opera quality to his voice and certain songs were written for his particular voice." I appreciated the honesty and on the other hand, Bruce has a different but also great voice. My 2 cents :-)
and he is CANADIAN!
Thanks for posting this vid, amazing song, I listen to it when I go to the Hebrides... I can't imagine something more fitting...
One of my best. Truly love it. Runrig concerts were the best days of my teens and afterx
Ich liebe diesen Song. Runrig ist meine Lieblingsband. Einfach klasse die Stimme von Donnie. Mein Herz geht dabei auf.
My most favourite song of RUNRIG sung by Donnie.
Too bad I had never heard of that band back then. I only came to know them end of 1999 beginning 2000...
a great description of that evening my friend. I was there also. I dont recall Donny slagging off the English?? Not his style. I attended many Runrig concerts over those years and never heard them say a critical word, other than on political issues. They are all very bright guys me thinks. Glad you enjoyed it
Herzergreifend...welch wunderschöner Song...und welch wunderbare Stimme! Donnie - the voice of scotland!!!
Such a haunting and powerful sound, it's Scotland 🏴 always
Sound of Run RIG 🔊🔊🔊 🎸🥁🎶🎤🎤🎤🎤 🏴🏴🏴
11 seconds ago I'm with gogs064, Runrig as a band is much more than just the lead singer - Malcolm Jones, who also plays pipes and accordion, is just awesome on guitar in this track in particular, and is as much key to the whole band's sound as the singer. And let's not forget Calum and Rory's brilliant songwriting ability. Plus Donnie is now a fantastic performer with his own band - so we have TWO great bands instead of one - I'm certainly not complaining! ;-)
The best band in Britain.
Donnie is the best
this is one of my fav songsbrings tear to my eyes and i wish i was at home in scotland
Can’t wait till August, love this song though it’s gonna be so sad to say cheerio but there music will live on xx
Runrig is the best.
Best way to describe an voyage above deep, not always blue, waters. I already haye some thousands miles under sails over all seven oceans. With great respects from Germany! Max
great poetry, great music!
Deep peace within the evermoving and yet in itself resting ocean
Heyhey,
this one was written by Malcom Jones!!! ;-)
but you're totally right, it's great. One of my favourites, too.
Powerful and peaceful at the same time, just like the Atlantic.
Fantastic Heart Rending!!!!!
Einfach nur Extraklasse!!!!!
runrig have a way of conveying feeling and sentiment like no other band i know of donnie wa s first class but bruce is also gr8 in his own wa

Anschaut pur - ;-)
Guthro could never sing this like that man can!
Honestly, this is the first time i hear this song, and the second song i hear from this band (the first one was, Here we stand in svandinavia.
And to be honest, This song, i don't find it to have the same presence, it just seems too light, too plain, and not near as much feeling.
A guy before me have written: There is no way you can listen to this song and not feel connected to this song,
I must say, i do not feel anything but, it is sad that this song text have been sung like it have.

donnie is runrig, bruce tries, but not good enough x
Oh please both exquisite but so different. They can't be compared
runrig is the only band that change his singer without big lost. But i like Donnies Timbre so much.
