    Getting your license is so freaking important if you want to move up in a career. The license shows that you can be trusted to protect health and safety and that you can be held accountable by your professional opinion. That said, it’s not easy, and it isn’t supposed to be. Studying for and taking the ASBOG exams was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, even harder than my research for my Master’s. I studied hours a day for most of a year and started studying 4 years before I took the Fundamentals (Florida hadn’t yet allowed new graduates to qualify to take it). My hard work paid off, however, with my scores of 87 for the first and 82 for the second (70 is a passing, and only around half to 60 percent the people who take these exams pass; I know one guy who got perfect scores, and I work at an agency that is full of geoscientists). Not to dissuade anyone from taking it. On the contrary. I think everyone in the geosciences (not in academia and not in one of the states that doesn’t require it to work) should seriously consider working towards getting it. It really does help your career (I was able to get a promotion and a sizable pay bump after I got it).

    I was a staff geologist for 8 years, documenting and working with drillers etc to assess the extent of soil and groundwater contamination in different areas of the country. Long hours snd physically demanding work, often with drilling crew but often alone taking groundwater samples from test wells alone, sometimes in dangerous remote areas , for good but not great pay. After years i was physically exhausted and changed careers

      Is your concern that you won't have support from family/friends/peers to pursue this path? If so, you are probably right! Geoscience fields are not very well known or at least not widely publicized. When I told my family I wanted to work in the oil industry they thought I wanted to work at a gas station! Yes, you may have to explain yourself to folks that don't understand geology but I promise you that if it is something you truly enjoy then it will be worth it! I've started a geoscience career playlist (only 2 videos but more are coming) to document the different journeys of geoscientist - you ought to browse it if this is something you are genuinely interested in.

    Hey I really enjoyed this video. You asked some really good questions. Not to mention how awesome it is hearing from a geologist living in NYC. ( I live in Brooklyn and was thinking that I may not be in the right city for a geology career, but im thinking twice=).
    I wanted to ask Anna, what is a good first step to getting into Geology in NYC. Is it going to straight to school for a degree? Maybe checking out some conferences first? (if so can you recommend some?) Visiting companies to get an idea of career paths? Geology meetups in NY?
    Just looking for good resources to further spark my interest and allow me to explore it more. I am 33 and looking to shift careers so any info would help thanks =)

    • @kailakaila
      @kailakaila  Před 5 lety +2

      I'll let Anna know that questions have been asked, but if you want my opinion, I'd say to "get into" Geology - as in getting a job, you need to have a formal education. Its a field where a bachelors at the minimum is needed. But if you are asking on ways to find out if its right for you, conferences and meetups are a good start. Also doing research on the companies and job openings near you or in an distance that you would be willing to travel to.

      She did one year at a NY community college, than finished her bachelors at an all girls private college in Massachusetts. Masters in from a college in NYC.

      Kaila what was her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Geology or was it called something else? I’m not seeing it at the school that my husband is looking at.
