  • Improve the speed and stability of your 3G/4G/LTE pocket wifi, mifi or USB stick.
    Believe it or not, you can significantly improve the speed of your mobile internet connection using items you have around the house, like cardboard, plastic and aluminum foil.
    I took the old windsurfer antenna template and scaled it up to be much larger and more effective with 3G / 4G pocket wifi devices.
    Template: www.gadgetaddic...
    In this episode, I'm testing with a Smartbro (Smart Philippines) LTE sim inside a HUAWEI E5573S - 320 LTE hospot. It would work just as well for Globe Tattoo or any other 3G / LTE mobile internet service around the world.
    In the next episode, we'll try use the reflector in an area that doesn't have a strong signal and also take a closer look at how the windsurfer reflector is made.
    I've had much better results with this reflector and the internal antennas of the HUAWEI hotspot than dedicated external 3G/4G antennas I bought for my hotspot.

    These really do work, it turns an omni directional antenna into a beam gaining about 10 db but from only one direction, which is probably what you want. As you mentioned aiming is critical. Every 3 db is a doubling of RF power. A round satellite dish for scrap really works well as you are gaining both horizontally and vertically, just mount directly on LNB.

      The antenna on old unused dish, since it is already at the correct distance away from dish for signal focus.

    Thanks for that, it gave me some useful ideas. I did as instructed and placed my mifi to face in the direction of the mast which put the bars up to 4. I then fashioned half a parabolic reflector out of an old bit of aluminium foil hat I had lying about and placed it adjacent to where I thought the mifi aerial was located. Hey presto, that pushed it up to 5 bars. Upload and download figures are greatly improved to 14-16 Mbps and CZcams no longer buffers all the time. Very happy.

    @davepickering997 Před 5 lety

    You would be better calculating the correct distance between the reflector an the mifi patch antenna. Like any parabola they have a focal point. Your Mifi is nowhere near that focal point. Remember you need to find out what band your Telcoms operator is using too as there are differences in wavelengths between 750Mhz and 2100Mhz !! You will only get an increase in data throughput when it has less re-tries due to multipath signals. Your reflector/parabola is going to reject more multipath than increase anything because of the incorrect focal point. Good try though but no fat cigar.

  • @TheRealSasquatch
    @TheRealSasquatch Před 8 lety

    Wouldn't it better to have the phone at the focal point of the curved reflector - for example an LNB positioned on a satellite dish? Alternately, just purchase an external antenna for the frequency your operator uses, open the device, desolder the internal antenna and connect the new external one.

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  Před 8 lety

      Well that's essentially what this reflector does, holds the pocket wifi at the focal point of the reflector. A satellite dish would do better but would cost a lot more and take up a lot more space.I bought antennas for the LTE pocket wi-fi you see in this video. It supports external antennas without having to solder anything. But they actually made the signal worse on both 3G and LTE. They were only cheap antennas. I'm sure large expensive yagi antennas pointed at the tower would work much better.

  • @prathamrao424
    @prathamrao424 Před 8 lety

    doesn't it affect the wifi signal transmitted by the modem...? like the wifi receivers behind the antenna?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  Před 8 lety

      I was wondering the same thing, so I did a little testing off camera. It doesn't make a huge difference because the wi-fi performance when you're in the same room still hugely outperforms what you can pull over 3G/LTE. So even if there is a slight decrease in Wi-Fi signal by using the reflector, you won't notice it :) Before I shot these videos, I was actually using the modem with a USB cable connected directly to my laptop, instead of the Wi-Fi. It didn't make any difference in the speeds I could attain :)

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  Před 7 lety +1

      The time of the day shouldn't make too much difference to the signal strength or quality. Although more users during peak hours could be affecting the performance of the tower. Making a reflector like this might help but ultimately the tower just might be too overloaded.

    @trythisj Před 8 lety

    I might want to #trythis soon, but what i'm using at home is my mobile phone on hotspot. So i might want to modify it to hold a phone with the screen still visible. You reckon i can just fiddle with the curvature of the reflective surface, since i don't have a printer for the template..?

    • @GadgetAddict
      @GadgetAddict  Před 8 lety +1

      I would start with the base design and just make the hole a bit larger, to hold your phone. I wouldn't worry too much about adjusting the curve until you determine if it's really going to make any difference at all. I didn't use a printer for my large version. I connected my laptop to the TV and then stuck paper to the TV and traced it by hand. I then stuck that paper to the more rigid folder and cut it out :)
