"Love is Evil" | The Philosophy of The Marquis de Sade

  • There are few philosophers in history as notorious as the Marquis de Sade. He is perhaps the most cynical thinker in history. He spurned love, looked down on morality, and was sceptical of anyone who claimed to be good. But despite it all, it is worth listening to his collection of short stories: The Crimes of Love.

the problem here is you can't just test people for their levels of happiness.
the stoics and buddhists never claimed that virtue would shield you from suffering or that you'd have a perfect life by following virtue.
In general you are happier the less selfish you are and you should follow virtue regardless if people kick you for it. You don't have to be naive though
doing something good for someone expecting them to reward you is just a form of manipulation, not true virtue

I’ve lived long enough to know that the Marquis De Sade is very much on the right track especially about virtue. Virtue without cunning will get you routed in this life. Where I disagree with him about love is that once you get to the point of harming the one you love so that you can possess them, it’s no longer love. It’s obsession and envy. If you truly loved someone, you’d want them to be happy even if they didn’t love you back.

Love is spiritual in the form that it shows you show to give and be without taking and having. The way your essence and self always tries to keek yourself safe through coping mechanisms and traumas, the way your own essence secures itself. The way your essence doesn't hold yourself accountable for whatever you think about it, even if you ignore your emotions, even if you force your body and mind till it breaks. The love is there where you find your consciousness and self existing to just "give" you instead of get. To exist and be as it is, to love what you are and exist as a whole. Love exists not only as a virtue but also as a quality that exists in its own right, hatred rather shows the need for love itself and the value of love.
The moment one thinks of someone, falls for them and wants to possess them and have them wholly regardless of whatever it's not love, it's desire taking control with the clothing of love.
Obsession and possessiveness aren't bad. They're just not something you should take in the form of "they are love". We are human. We obsess at times because the love is beautiful and for our own biological needs we also want things like possession.
Most of the time it's not "love" we do in the real world. Even in romantic relationships, it's not love, it's love added with some more stuffs added.
My wording is crap and whatsoever but love isn't understood wholly in the right manner. It's rather defamed due to our experiences. Something happens because we loved people, something happened because we loved someone. Thus its taken as bad. When in reality love is there, but the problem is believing not having possession would lead to hate. We lose someone and go insane. Is it because love destroyed us? If there was love it wouldn't ever destroy us. It's an essential existence regardless of the state something is in. One can love morality instead of trusting in one area of it, and never follow it.

I think that what The Marquis de Sade fails to acknowlodge it's that love isn't a feeling of ownership, of power over the other. All the things he describes in this video seems to be emotional dependency or some kind of obesession. It's the objectifying of people, treating people like they exist only to pleasure me.
That's not love, at least not for my definition. Love is some kind of misture of reason and emotions. You can feel hate, anger or sadness over people you love. Love is what prevents your bonds with the people you love from breaking.
If someone you love is happy with another one. Even though you feel sad, you just let her go. Because love it's not just about what you feel, but considering what the other feel too.
I don't agree that love is some kind of amoral force. Because saying that looks like I'm treating love as only an emotion. I think love can't be just an emotion. Love needs reason to blossom, otherwise it's just a passion
But I don't agree either that love is perfect or that it will prevent you from suffering. But in many cases I think it can make life easier to go through especially when we are in dark places

@@butterflywind999 I believe that love and falling in love are different experiences. In my first language, we have distinct words for these concepts. Rather than saying ‘falling in love with someone,’ we express it as feeling passionate (a loose translation of the Portuguese word ‘Paixão’) toward them. This passionate feeling is undoubtedly an emotion. When we encounter sadness, anger, or hate within our relationships we require reason to learn how to coexist with someone. Every relationship inevitably involves negative emotions because they are inherent to human existence and reflect our imperfections. The act of living and caring for different individuals who act and think differently from us is a blend of reason and positive emotions. This capacity to be kind and compassionate despite our differences can indeed be called love

  • @the_primal_instinct
    @the_primal_instinct Před měsícem +3

The reason for people's misery and malevolence when they commit atrocities is not the fault of love. It's the fault of greed. I love you, and so I MUST have you, whether you or even the universe itself want it or not. And I will get what I want at any cost. Is this love still true? Often, the answer is yes. Is it love that's responsible for things playing out so horribly? No, it's greed. Even if you don't commit acts of evil, but just suffer quietly, when you can't have someone it's still not love that hurts you. It's greed.
Now, does that mean you should just want nothing and dare not have a claim to a mutual feeling? It does not. But does it mean that your expectations should probably not be detached from your capabilities, objective reality, and moral values? F*ck yeah, it does.

When one finds beautiful flower what do they do?
I think the answer to this question explains it to us what it is we are really talking about (I do not share the thought that the word 'love' is the right word here, but that is just my opinion).
    the answer is
    1) one can leave the flower as is, watching it's life nurturing it, and perhaps be sad at it's inevitable loss.
    2) one plucks it to satisfy their own ego, to have an exclusive ownership to it.
what Sade seems to be showing feels to me to be the second option.
hence why I am not of the idea that it is love, but rather lust and ego coming together.
this can be seen as love in all the given examples seem to be of physical nature.
Now I am not against romantic relationship but rather of the thought that love is more than that which is portrayed in vast media.
to me love seems to be the first choice. to the above question.
Like in the series "Vinland Saga"
there is a talk between a prince and a priest.
The prince had recently been through the death of his guard, Ragnar who was more of a father to him than his biological one.
the price says that Ragnar was the only one who truly loved him, the priest tells him that he missed his mark saying the emotion Ragnar felt toward him was not love but discrimination.
Ragnar watched 62 villagers taken of their food and ki**ed, to ensure his safety.
to give an example of love he points to a d**d body and says, that he can no longer hate or hurt, would provide food to animals and insects and not complain about weather, that is the essence of love.
Now of course we do not have to go that extreme but the idea is there, love being what sets all equal to one person's eyes.
what Sade's story seems to me are the results of ego, wish to posses another person, lust, greed of wanting another at any cost, arrogance in believing one to be worthy of the one they wish to have, obsession.
Other than the use of word love I would say Sade was someone who saw society and saw that which is swept under the rug, he tells us of how the wonderful word love is used by people to justify their actions, and how delusional people are.

Romantic love is about desire, possession and control. It is plucking the flower and shoving it in your lapel. In doing this, the person is not thinking of the flowers future or well-being.
They will adore the flower until it shows signs of death, and then they will throw it away.
Other types of love like Storge and Philia are about watching the flower where it is, and possibly even nurturing it more. Watering it, protecting it.
I don’t think romantic love is actually love.

Romantic love may seem like it is filled with lust , but perhaps lust is but a part of the complete relationship, copulation could just be like any other activity which partners may enjoy and not something that defines them. While looking at much of relationship no doubt your view is understandable, it still stands that we may not see it as possession but romantic love as more beautiful.
2 people sharing their lives, trying to live together and understand each other when none of the two may not know their ownself, living and sharing life, being their for each other.

@@hemantjain2387 honestly, I prefer your more optimistic view to my own. And, ideally, I completely agree on what romantic love should be. I don’t think lust is a bad thing. I just think it’s a dangerous thing when it exists without care for the object of desire. In love, it would be wonderful and, yes, does not define them.
I even think true romantic love is possible. Mostly between two quite young people or two people mature enough to truly understand the value of it. I believe that some people can choose to be true to each other and to death, and I believe two people can be willing to lay down their life for one another.
      Let’s say, I just think it’s rare.
It’s a negative comparison, but I think true romantic love is about as rare as dying in a plane crash. More of us think about dying in a plane crash, or think we’re going to die in a plane crash than actually do. Most people don’t.
But that does not mean that they don’t exist.
I agree that 2 people sharing their lives with genuine care for each other is beautiful.
So often, one does genuinely care but, the other has a very different agenda. Maybe I just think that’s so heartbreaking that it’s not worth trying to be one of the rare people who gets the real thing? Of course, that means I never will. Hopefully, with your more positive point of view, you have it.

I am neither one to encourage nor one to discourage another on what they should do, especially since I can always be wrong, there are so many factors.
What I can do is well choose for myself, and choose not to regret it.

The primary hole in de Sade's view is one of conflation. He conflates goodness with weakness or naivete. He conflates love with desire, possessiveness, lust or passion. I'm guessing he had a hard time understanding this because he was a psychopath. I'm not using the word psychopath as a pejorative, I mean it literally, and thus he did not truly understand the concept of valuing someone more than yourself, placing their happiness above your own.
I love my daughters, I would die for them, I would suffer for them. I hope that have great, meaningful and joyful futures. I hope they find wonderful husbands and have great marriages that fulfill them.
The problem is that love can come with other negative feelings such as possessiveness, passion, ego, etc. Though, that these are often comingled does not equate them, and the actions they inspire does not indict love.

But I think it's important to know that what he showed wasn't love. It was infatuation, corruption, and how our desires can bring out the worst in us. Love can bring out the worst in us too, and even though it may not be as bad as he depicts it (I sure hope not), it's helpful to remember that it unlocks something primal in us, something that needs regulating, but is still a part of us whether we like it or not.

Despite the extreme examples, I also believe that de Sade has a point. Love can drive us to commit all sorts of awful things. Especially the point about how virtuous people only end up exploited by those who are not so virtuous. Of course this doesn't mean we should not be virtuous ourselves, but we need to think about what we are doing, who we interact with, and what will happen.
For me, love is something that needs to be kept in check and made sure it doesn't go out of control. Because at the end of the day, it's a bunch of chemicals inside of us interacting in a certain way. It can be beautiful in its own way, but that's why we need to observe it and make sure it doesn't go out of control.

      @epsteindidntkillhimself69 Před 4 měsíci +2

@@stevenl1706 The love that most people think of is really Sade's conception of love. If you had an altruistic love where you truly only desired the happiness of the one you love, then if you knew they would be happier with someone else, you would be happy for them to be with that person. But that is not how most people would react. The idea of someone's romantic interest being with someone else inspires fierce jealousy in people. That jealousy would not exist if they did not desire to own that person and prioritize that desire for ownership over the happiness of the one they love.
Its not a matter of love being "corrupted by our sinful passions". That's just what love is. In fact, infidelity is considered sinful by the virtue ethicists only to justify their desire for ownership. It is the "non-sinful" and "pure" love which is the most selfish and monstrous, and gives rise to Sade's conclusions.

  • @Thagomizer
    @Thagomizer Před 3 měsíci +3

What de Sade conceives as "love" is better described as lust. Lust is not to be understood as sexual desire, but as an inordinate desire for something. A rapist is lustful, not because he desires his victims sexually, but because he desires to brutalize and dominate them. A classic example of this might be Frollo from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". He is willing to destroy Esmeralda if he cannot have her. Phebus and Quasimodo also desire Esmeralda, but unlike Frollo, they care about her as a person and will her good over their own happiness. They are both content to let her go.

I think one important aspect being forgotten in the debate of whether love can be harmful, is what "love" actually means, especially in contrast with "obsession". I would argue that most of these tales of "Sade-ism" are reflections of obsession rather than love. The way I would define love would include a need to desire to uplift and enrich the object of that desire, as opposed to these tales, wherein I would argue it is obsession driving these actions. Viewing the "love interest" as a prize to be won; idolizing and idealizing them. Putting them on a pedestal and turning them into a monolithic caricature.
But again, it ultimately comes down to the definition of "love" and whether you call into question the self profession or accept it at face value.

But we could say the same about frustration leading to explosive anger when taken to the extreme.
There is definitely value in pointing out the blurred lines between these human concepts, and also, I think there is value in not placing too much weight or importance on small facets that are truly only relevant when seen within the greater context of the capacity of the human mind. I have read some of the stories in this video from a different short story collection along with 120 Days of Sodom and an early addition of Justine: the Misfortunes of Virtue (unfortunately I realised too late that this was a very clean version of the story as Sade made it more explicit as he edited it).
I think a perspective that is neglected in this video is that Sades arguments need not be taken at face value for example Camille Paglia argues that some of Sade's writing is a satire or Rousseau. Either way I would be really interested in a video on your interpretation of Sade's political philosophy as his work has not only ethical implications but also heavily refers to the state of nature.

I can't help but to feel a deep sadness when exposed to Sade's views about love. I don't view myself as romantic, I've never experience this supposed romantic love, but I do know love. I love the people who I hold close, when those I care about succeed at their goals, live their best life and are healthy in both body, mind and soul, I feel genuine happiness for them and celebrate them. I love the beauty of nature and art and the potential we humans have, our ability of creation. I love the flowers I see growing at the side of the rode's I travel. I love the baby ducklings I see each spring. For me love isn't about taking or destroying, for me love is like a new born kitten, you hold it close, protecting them from the elements, feed them, see them grow and become independent, not wanting anything in return but maybe to see them flourish. I guess my practice of love can be seen as the ancient Greek word ''agape''. Obsession, lust and and wanting to posses is not love, at least not by me.

Through time, I start see things as a double-edged sword. Ever human necessity at best, can serve us benefits and give us conduciveness. The other part is where it can give us obsession and abuse of that certain need/necessity.

These things have become part of our thinking since these ideas have been in the air for quite some time.
I dont see anything new in it.
What people should do is be aware of all these things and how selfish we are and still, be able to love.
In my view being a Neitzsche reader myself, I do believe the the feeling of 'love' is enough in itself.
Yes, it can be broken or be twisted since it depends on a number of things. When you attach yourself to a goal and give all of your life and work to it and you achieve it.
    Did the goal betray you?
Maybe it did, or maybe you think its too different from being betrayed by your love.
Which is so stupid as an idea itself.
The idea of a goal or that 'its achievable' - is created by people too.
Being aware of the selfishness in you and others - shouldn't take you away from love but closer to it.
    Understand :
You are not just an Individual.
You are an Individual as a PART of the world.
Yes, a part - so even though you have your own mind and desires but yet,
You are a PART of the WORLD.

yeah so the middle ground is actually someone's ability to vibe with marquis de sade. Because each life brings lots of different experiences that middle ground is gonna fluctuate. Like for me the middle ground is that i agree almost with everything he says and feel nothing about admitting it even with there being a glimpse of a wish inside me wanting love to be all good. It's just not the reality, and I mean like there are people that face a life worse than him and he just was lucky enough to share his tale, what about the others who could not

Thanks for this video. It's an apt one, well suited for Valentine's Day. 😈😁 I subscribed to your channel. Clear and nuanced exposition of ideas by the philosophers you cover.
In many ways, I do agree with the depraved Marquis - especially his cynicism - but certainly not the hedonistic depraved route he took. I replied to someone who commented this current video was describing lust and not love that there is no such thing as pure/innocent "romantic love". "Romantic love" is but a moral/"politically correct" cover for lust or desire. An important "core" of "romantic love" is the ultimate ecstasy of the act of copulation. There is always an element of selfishness and possessiveness in "romantic love". The s3xual animal in all humans is the ultimate "heart" of all "romantic love". "Lust" and all kinds of "depravities" are just an extreme spectrum of "romantic love". We humans are all a monstrous hybrid of animal and the Divine. After all, s3xual desires and desires for food are amongst the most primitive and primeval instincts we share with animals. The prefrontal
cortex where human intelligence resides, and where notions of morality are formed, suppresses those more primitive animal instincts. Jeckyll and Hyde are within us, even morality is a plaything for Hyde. Sorry for this long comment but I want to say again : your videos are superb.

Love is cruel ? Nah. People deprived of love are. Greeks knew very well about it and called it „mania” - the love that is deranged and empty, turning people into monsters that go va banque on love and if it isn’t paying back, well… Sade happens (in not as excessive way of course). I think that the worst myth people are made to believe in is not being a whole but a half of a man when you don’t have a boyfriend/girlfriend. As if for some reason having a partner makes your flaws magically go away without any effort put into self improvement.
