Surviving Auschwitz: A Child Emerges from the Holocaust

  • It’s some of the most indelible Holocaust imagery: a group of children wearing striped uniforms pulling back their sleeves to reveal tattoos. Their young faces, surrounded by the barbed wire of Auschwitz shortly after their liberation, laid bare the evils of the Holocaust. Tova Friedman was one of these innocents-a young girl targeted by the Germans solely because she was Jewish. Marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2024, Tova talks about how she is dedicating the last chapter of her life to fighting antisemitism and ensuring the victims of the Holocaust are not forgotten.

I went to school with and dated a guy, whose mother had numbers on her arm. When she learned my mom was interested in most things Jewish. She told m a shortened version of her story. I'll just say this. She was in a camp as a child. Lost all relatives. Came to the US. Made a life. Only told me once. But I remember.

Marilyn Silberstein from Philadelphia. My mother-in-law, Blanka Silberstein z'l, was liberated from Auschwitz. She was my first and closest relationship to the Holocaust and had a profound influence on my children and now, my grandchildren. My daughter who lives in Adelaide, Australia, is a founding member of their Holocaust Museum, and her daughter honors the memory of her great grandmother who survived by working and lecturing there.

The little girl at the front showing her tattoo was a lady called Eva Moses Kor. She survived Auschwitz/Birkenau and the ‘ministrations’ of Dr. Josef Mengele. Later in life she showed great fortitude and dignity in telling the world what she had seen and experienced in the camp and in Dr. Mengele’s laboratory. She was a contributor on TV programmes about the ‘Final Solution’ and the Nazis, such as the documentary series, ‘The World at War’.

@@thomashunter5707 Both Miriam Mozes Zeiger and Eva Mozes Kor survived Auschwitz-Birkenau. They initially went back to Romania to live with an aunt and in 1950 they emigrated to Israel. Miriam was still living in Israel when she helped her sister, who had now emigrated to the US with her husband, establish the ‘CANDLES:Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors’ Organisation. Miriam died of kidney problems in 1993. These were thought to be as a long term result of the experiments carried out by Josef Mengele. Eva Mozes Kor died in July 2019 whilst on an educational tour in Poland.

Sorry I missed this viewing live, but was able to watch this morning.
Tova, your story is such a powerful message and I've sent your grandson's tic toc page to my young adult children to follow.
I was fortunate to have very good history teachers in junior high & high school. Teachers who never held back on this subject and who brought survivors into our school so we could hear their stories. One teacher was a U.S. Army photographer who took photos of camps when they were liberated. This left an everlasting impression on me.
Thank you Tova for sharing your story. May God bless you and your family a thousand times over ❤

I commend your mother for telling you exactly what was happening. Many schools here in the United states don't teach about the holocaust. If they do, it isn't until middle to high school. By then, many of them have already learned racism and intolerance. What can be done to get the schools to start teaching at an earlier age? So many lessons of the holocaust can be related to world tensions of today. Bless you.

Thank you Tova, for telling your story. I was not born until 9 years after you were liberated. 2 of my uncles served in the US military in the European theater of WWII. My father was too young to serve during WWII, but he and my mother taught me of the horrors that Nazi Germany inflicted on millions of Jewish people. I was appalled by what I learned though out my growing up years from my parents, my uncles and my history teachers. But it was not until I was adult in a college class that I was able to meet and talk with survivors of the Holocaust.
Tova you talked about your faith and struggle with God because, "Where was He, during that time, I am not Jewish but do have a strong belief in God, who loves all his children. I believe that God was with you and every Jew, those who were murdered during that time and those who survived. And I believe that He was shedding tears. But He could not take away the agency of those evil people. I also believe that in the spirit world after death. All those, again, those who were murdered and those who survived, will be able to testify before God, to witness, that those people were the ones who turned against God by committing those atrocities against His children.

Your mother was so intelligent with such good survival skills and she passed those on to you. And your father also survived. He also had good survival skills. In your case, you did not survive because of luck. You survived because of your mother's training and smarts. Out of all the prisoners, she was the only one who came up with the plan to save herself and her child before the march. I am so happy you have your children and grandchildren who love you so much and I am sorry to hear after all you have suffered you feel survivor's guilt. One life saved is a whole world. God did not save you; your mother saved you. She must have been a remarkable woman.

Watching Tovas interview actually changed my whole life ha! For many years, I felt like I couldn’t participate in the academic conversation, because it had become so twisted and evil but she inspired me to face that evil, to run alongside them, I’ve gone back to school, and I’ve become quite successful in academia. Who would have believed it??
Anyway. I’m not letting the bad and the evil prevent me from taking part anymore. I love her stories. She gives such a unique perspective, although general, sounding to many I’ve seen and heard a lot of stories from the Holocaust, and had a really good holocaust education, and her story Wonderful to listen to although excruciating and frustrating to hear
