    I can't take the pressure and it's starting to show
    In my heart you know how it pains me
    A life of leisure is no life you know
    Waking up and getting up has never been easy,
    Oh oh, I think you should know.
    Waking up and getting up has never been easy,
    Oh, oh, I think you should know.
    Oh, oh, I think you should go.
    Make a cup of tea, and put a record on.
    I'd work very hard but I'm lazy
    I've got a lot of songs but they're all in my head.
    I'll get a guitar and a lover who pays me
    If I can't be a star I won't get out of bed.
    Waking up and getting up has never been easy,
    Oh, oh, I think you should know.

    One of the best songs I've ever heard

    In pub based conversation, I've often had to choose one single 7 inch to distill that era in the UK. Fittingly, I've often cited this one above even other personal favourites like Pulp, Suede and what have you.
    Why you might ask? In answer, can't put my inner musical finger on it, not for lack of trying.
    But above all, like cross hairs homing in on some intangible target, if it doesn't hit bull's eye every time - it hits the next ring in line...very consistently.
    I can almost imagine Jo Wiley and Steve Lemac introducing it on their then Radio1 evening slot. If only they all aged as well as this offering, for its ability to take me back is quite uncanny!

    This band was amazing. A ton of pop hit type songs that are super catchy. I do keep seeing comments about band claiming this or that about similarities to their music. There's only so many chord progressions and how many years of recorded music... of course a progression is going to repeat but every band listed so far ... Idk other than that the songs have nothing in common. It's not like they straight sampled or something....

    Those saying this song wasn't that great at the time are talking Bollocks! This was a monster smash in the UK indie scene and broke through to the mainstream, it was always on the radio. Connection blew up much later, after it's initial release, due to it being used on film soundtracks and TV shows. I can't even make a cup of tea without my internal music box playing 'Waking up' in my head. Great, great album!

    The band became subject to controversy when several bands sued them for plagiarism. Specifically, the post-punk band Wire (whom Elastica counted as one of their main influences) claimed that many of the band's melodies were taken from Wire compositions, as well as by The Stranglers. Notably, Wire's "I Am the Fly" has a chorus similar to Elastica's "Line Up" and the intro synthesizer part in Elastica's "Connection" (later also repeated on guitar) is lifted from the guitar riff in Wire's "Three Girl Rhumba" and transposed a semitone, and The Stranglers also passed comment that Elastica's "Waking Up" bore a marked resemblance to their song "No More Heroes". The disputes were resolved by out-of-court settlements.

    • @IncredulousMisanthrope
      @IncredulousMisanthrope Před 6 lety +9

      The whole controversy was bullshit to be quite straightforward. Nirvana stole it from killing joke and killing joke stole it from the damned. Same applies here and besides, it's not who does it first that counts, it's who does it better!

      @@mbrady2329 it's been two years since I've commented here lol...time flies...
      Anyways no, I stand by my claim. I do admit, Justine is very basic and bland, but there's no such thing as originality (if that is what you refer to as being a part of "talent"). Humans "rip off" ideas from one another and claim it their own. That doesn't make any of them "talented" or "creative".
      I respect your opinion regardless though!

    • @mbrady2329
      @mbrady2329 Před 3 lety +9

      @@IncredulousMisanthrope, Justine Frischmann diluted the songs she chose to plagiarise, as opposed to enriching popular music in any way; she was / is a talentless hack. I find it rather telling that Wire continue to gig and record new material, whilst la Frischmann left the music industry long ago.
      Personally, I don't tend to respect op-in-i-ons unless they're backed up with something more substantial, but I appreciate that the comments section of CZcams is perhaps not the best format for that!

    • @IncredulousMisanthrope
      @IncredulousMisanthrope Před 3 lety +4

      @@mbrady2329 well, personally I don't usually bring much more than opinions on a CZcams comments thread lmao. Regardless, I'll bring in something factual.
      Guy Deutscher (2005) in his book "Unfolding of Language" noted that 'inventions' and originality is no such thing. We are merely a product of our environment, taking ideas from people and making it our own. We actually discover ideas and simply mix two/three things, and call it our own.
      For example, post punk bands like Wire were never "original". Rather they took things from previous bands, mixed it up and made it their own. So your claim that Wire still brings up "new stuff" is just objectively wrong, since their stuff is a copy of their environment with nothing original of their own. That's all.
