Tewkesbury Town Walk

  • Like most people visiting a town, we focus at shop level, but the real story of its history can usually be found by looking up. Tewkesbury is no exception, and this film aim to show as many clues as we can. Once you ‘get your eye in’ you will never look at a town or city in the same way again.
    Home to the adventurous subscriber. As well as films we have a bi-weekly Vlog to keep up to date on the previous and next week’s videos, and a chance for all to air their views on a variety of subjects, why not join in.
    My passion has been walking, a while ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and walking does not come naturally any more, however the more I walk the easier it gets, for now anyway. I hope these videos will inspire others to keep going and hanging on in there. I try to cover variety of subjects, such as old abandoned railways, and canals. I love the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, with its rich history and I usually take my camera whenever we holiday in the southwest and Cornwall. The rugged coastal paths are a magnet for anyone who loves dramatic scenery. I live close to the Cotswolds Hills and have done quite a lot of walking around there, recently, following some of the lovely rivers. Hill walking on the Malvern’s is a challenge but worth the effort. I try not to let Parkinson’s get me down and take every opportunity to get out with my camera and film, I hope you enjoy watching. P.W.

    A fascinating tour of the upper storey's of Tewkesbury, adding another dimension for the visitor to enjoy in this architecturally rich townscape. I like your eye for detail and some of the local quirks which confront the sharp-eyed observer, such as the elongated bricks which blend in perfectly with their irregular surroundings! Another beautifully filmed video, Ron. Tewkesbury is a favourite of mine, lots of history. The only fly in the ointment is the very large, and very old Mulberry tree, in the Abbey grounds. Each year this is festooned with lovely black mulberries, which all fall to the ground and rot away. All that Mulberry wine, gone to waste! Take care, it’s still a bit hot for adventuring. Ron

    Another great video, Ron. I hope the intermittent audio problems were microphone-related and not any vocal impediment on the part of the commentator! Tewkesbury looks fascinating, with so many historical features (including a traditional Indian restaurant!) and you could probably have made the video twice as long. I wonder how long some of the old timbered buildings will last for future generations to admire. The renovations such as on the pub at the end can only go so far to extend the life of them, and the cost must be considerable.

    I enjoyed looking at the wooden framed buildings, It reminded of the Weald and Down museum at Singleton where many a building has been taken to be restored and put on show. I think they do the TV show The Repair Shop from there.
    Lots of interesting details, brickwork, clocks, did I see a giant key? to be seen up above the ground level as well.
    The channel in the alleyway reminded of a village near here high up in the mountains called Pampaneira, which has channels through the centre of the steep lanes, I'll see if I can find a link in CZcams.

    My wife and I spent time in Tewkesbury in the early 70s when it was a lot quieter than it is now - quieter in that there was much less traffic and very few visitors. Since then it has been 'discovered', but it seems to me that many visitors spend an hour here while en route to somewhere else. The town therefore sees little benefit, which is a pity because as your wonderful 'taster' shows there is so much to see here for those who know how to look. The Abbey is one of the country's finest churches with monuments surpassed only by Westminster Abbey and some amazing stained glass. However, the town would still be a gem even if Henry 8 and his barbarians had flattened it.

  • @757trev
    @757trev Před 2 lety +2

    Hi Ron. Many thanks for today's excellent video and for taking us along with you. With regard to your point about why is the church an Abbey, perhaps I can shed some light on it for you. An Abbey is more of a Monastery, whereas a church is more akin to a Cathedral. So, Tewksbury has been a place of worship since the 7th century with a priory being established there in the late Saxon period circa 10th century. Work on the present Abbey/Monastery, on the site of the priory, did not start until 1112. It was built to house Benedictine monks, and was near completion when consecrated in 1121. No trace of the original priory remains. Re-modelling of a large part of the east end was undertaken in the 15th century with many of the Norman features being removed. At the dissolution of the monasteries in 1540, the Abbey's valuables were seized by Henry VIII and the building was purchased by the townspeople for £453 (the value of the lead on the roof and the metal in the bells), to become their parish church. However, it has always retained it's title of Abbey. The last major re-modelling of the Abbey was undertaken, controversially, by Sir Gilbert Scott, the English Gothic Revival architect in 1875.
    Of course, I can't end without getting a link to railways in here somewhere!! I looked back at your posts on Tewksbury railway station and the walk along the old Ashchurch to Malvern line. I then had a look at the station site today and it is still exactly as it was when you filmed it! I'm amazed that what must be a valuable piece of real estate, so close to the town centre, has not been snapped up for re-development, despite the Morrison's supermarket having been built right on it's doorstep in recent years. I expect one day the site will end up with commercial premises or housing on it, so it's great that you have recorded what is left for posterity Ron. Best wishes, Trev

For me, that was a delightful first and perfect end of the day. I'm still bursting with pride (we were fighting over who was to have the privilege of paying, each insisting it was their turn, which sounds tame once explained. Very nice to visit one of my old places of residences when growing up. Lovely video Ron. My dad had a carpentry workshop in Abbey Mill Lane just next to the mill (you can just spot the doorway @3:23). The abbey is called an abbey "for some reason": it was part of an abbey, but when King Henry 8th decided to dissolve the monasteries over some argie-bargy with the pope about his bit on the side, the townspeople had a whip-round and bought the church from the crown. I'm sure the local museum will have a lot more detail on this -- that's what I remember from being at primary school there in 1971 anyway!

    Hi Ron: I knew it was going to be a good video with your "I'm not sure that's appropriate" comment at the sign on the Abbey! A brilliant walk, what incredibly interesting architecture. We'll never have anything old here...when things start getting old and interesting they tend to rip them down and replace them with 60 storey glass boxes. I reckon I'd better be careful. I was just pulling weeds in the garden and wondering whether you'd know the names of them, and whether they actually ARE weeds. OVM and I are now playing "find it" in the garden. She (reluctantly) drops the ball close to me, I grab it before she can, then with difficulty because she's so excited, I grab her, cover her eyes and throw the ball among the plants. Then I say, you guessed it, "find it!", and let her go. She hunts around for the ball and seems to enjoy the game. I think that's why she likes it when you go looking for railway fenceposts among the undergrowth...she recognizes you as a kindred spirit! Have a good week Ron, and thanks for the great video. James
