  • @woohooboy

Dusty's version of this song is the one most people remember and for a good reason - it's brilliant. She captures the elegence and the sense of lost and longing contained within the lyrics.
The tempo is also perfect. Soft and slow then building to a faster and faster pace - all the while never losing it's emotional impact. Her vocals are also perfect. Sweet, dream like and haunting.
In short, she makes you feel every note and word of this classic song.
    Incredible

Genius all over this song. Legrand's music (thank you, Mozart, for the opening), the Bergmans for the lyrics, and Dusty for the unique rendering. She had the guts to go in new directions throughout her career, the tlent to pull it off, and the perfectionism to make each recording the best it could be. In the case of Dusty in Memphis, I think she hit perfection.

She understood something profound about timing. Listen to the Noel Harrison and Matt Munro versions of this song and hear how they subvert the inherent drama of the piece by singing it too damn fast. Dusty slowed it down and mined far deeper the lode of mysterious ennui that Michel Legrand built into "The Windmills of Your Mind."

Beethoveniac, Hi, I read the article you are referring to, and you are correct. I immediately felt the same way. That is another interpretation of the lyrics in the song, which Michel Legrand, along with Alan & Marilyn Bergman wrote in 1968 for the movie. The Director, Norman Jewison needed a song that was enigmatic & Abstract, such as "Strawberry Fields", however, after listening to windmills, he chose it instead..
