- Isopods are some of the best pet invertebrates. Cylisticus convexus is an underrated isopod for bioactive cleanup crews in vivariums for reptiles and amphibians. They are not the best pet isopod because they are rather shy, and they burrow, but there is a pretty spectacular pied morph of this species of isopod.

When I was first getting these. I saw that CZcams has zero references for this pod. Glad there is finally one
Hi Rus, a week ago I got about 20 specimen of this "Ukrainian pied" from someone from Slovenia. For this moment they are my favorite isopod. But that can change very fast. Great isopod! Can't wait till I find the first young. Greetings from the Netherlands...
Congratulations on your new Ukraine Pied, I love mine too! I hope they do well for you 👍🏼
I bought 5 kinds of isopod because of you. They're all Armadillidiums.
Nice information. I have a small wild colony I started with 2 pregnant females I caught in my yard when I was lifting firewood. While the wild morph isn't too flashy, I like the shape they have and their long antennae. As someone who is a bit of a night owl, I tend to spot a few of em when they emerge to feed.
Great video Rus. Tons of info. You are correct that there should be more focus on this isopod
The Cylisticus convexus isopods I just got from you in March are doing great. They're now one of my favorite types of isopods. So undemanding and their tub is full of babies. Can't wait to get some pied when you get them in stock.
How about a video on Dwarf Purples? Are the Costa Rican Dwarf Purples different from the regular Dwarf Purples? They're one of the next types I want to get.

I started keeping cylisticus convexus “orange tail” in September of 2020 and I currently have 3 full orange, possibly albino cylisticus convexus! Would love to chat with you!
Sounds great! Look me up on Instagram, @aquarimaxpets
It's like you were reading my mind. I've been curious about these. Please do Oniscus asellus next!
I've been trying to identify these guys for a couple days now. Thanks for the information! I have a lot of different species in my yard that I need to identify, and I can now cross this one off.
Cylisticus Convexus most time hide in debris. They are large, fast and look kind of athletic but will quickly run away from a sight. Thus the unpopularity. Also they are among less dry tolerant isopod species and maybe more fragile (softer carapax) when it goes to enviroment but dominating where present. Jet the pieds looks very impressive indeed. If you can see them. In nature I found lots of different species with darker head and lighter body, this is kind of repeating pattern but not at sutch extent as in vid.
Fascinating species!
I am so going to try to find these for my vivarium for my Uro. Thank you
If you are in the USA, I can ship this species to most states.
@@Aquarimax Man I found this notification 2 days late. I got myself 25 to start a colony which I'll be receiving in the next 2 days or so. Your channel has me hooked learning about these fellows and I can't wait to learn more and more and take care of them. I live in Florida
I didn't know this sp had so many morphs great video russ!
I have some wild type and they just now had babies! But after watching this video I might get some of the pied
Those are some really cool looking isopods collection thank you for sharing this video with us rus
Hello great video information Russ
Lets go love your content rus🙌
Nice to see you again my friend :) Long time no see... I'm happy to see you are doing good!
Can you do a full care guide (with maybe your tips) on Porcellio scaber? I found some color morphs in my garden, and i really want to keep them, but i don't want to kill the colored ones, b/c all of my attempts has been a fail. (I would like to see a more DIY type care guide, with materials that anybody can found! Thx!)
Dude, why you kill my tetras?
@@colinwinkelmann299 Wat?
@@Dwarfgourami I believe that person comment was due to your name -- my guess is a dwarf gourami killed their tetras (old video but just stumbled on this comment as learning about this species)
@@hefoxed lol then that person is wrong. Dwarf gouramis don't kill tetras, poor water condition and bad tankmates do. Also the fish on my profile picture is dead :(
Nice!!!
A little late watching this....work work work....I'd like to hear about the clown isopods. I have a few species of isopods along which are colonizing accept for my clowns. Had them for almost 5 months now. Their doing great, just no breeding :(
I'd really like a video on armadillidium nasatum. So little is said about them.
Great suggestion! I’ll film one!
(First comment) nice woodlice very interested
Never had this species but I always had my eye on them they always looked interesting
Great info! I'm thinking of using them in a bioactive but the rate they eat through cork bark is a concern, that may be why they're not as popular? But also, many people go with the recommendation and don't want to experiment with something new. I'd like to have different isopods in each set up (on my third), so thus researching
I just started keeping isopods and these were one of the species I collected from my yard. One of the wild ones I found was pied! Now I want to try to breed that one, but since I'm so new I don't know how that will go.
If you keep it with a small number of other normal individuals , you mind see piede pop up in subsequent generations. Good luck!
Probably a stupid question, but...what do you do with your isopods when you end up with ELEVENTY BILLION of them?
Good question! In my case, I sell so many that I never need to worry about it. Some people use them as feeders, or decrease the amount of leaf litter they offer, which limits the breeding of most species.
@@Aquarimax Thank you :)
Can you keep them with dwarf whites?
Long boi
Where do you think getting this is best? I'm in NE US and don't want to have these little dudes shipped too far.
I am not sure of availability of this particular species in your area, but I do know and trust some vendors closer to you
Is it dangerous for human being
In any situation...?
Please reply...
I have kept them for years and have never been harmed by them at all. I don’t know of any venomous or poisonous isopod species. Absolutes are hard to work with though. 😊
@@Aquarimax Thank you sir ❤️👍😊
I really wanna get some of these but i wanna keep them in the same tank as my dairy cows, so bigger question, do they like the same temp and humidity as the dairy cows? And what food is their favorite? ( you may have answered this in the video but can you tell me what you think?)
Hi!
They like fish food pellets a lot, but if you keep them with dairy cows, one will almost certainly outcompete the other over time.
Hey do you think these will do well in a tree frog enclosure, substrate moist alot ? Or better off with Florida fast?
I think either could work, as long as they are not eaten too quickly 😁
@@Aquarimax lol thanks. In thar case would the traditional dwarf whites be better off , or to protein hungry?
@@josephg8818 if the others don’t work, you could go with dwarf whites…
@@Aquarimax I have the option to get either one just not sure which 1 would be better to go with
@@josephg8818 which kind of tree frog is it? If the substrate is very moist, probably Florida Fast
