Yeah, it's videos like THESE that I love. The passion, the sense of joy and the fact that yes the remake is fantastic, is all here and accounted for. These are the types of videos I can enjoy and love because due to some negativity around the world right now, you need something positive to get you on your feet and make you smile. Fantastic job with the video Digi and I agree 110% about the remake. The characters, the side characters actually getting growth(special shout outs to Biggs, Wedge and especially Jessie), the music and the combat are all great in making me happy that the remake came out. Hell, I even love Cloud in this game now because of how he is growing and Aerith I also love her too, despite never liking her much before. I still have some complaints about the game, especially with a BIG elephant in the room, but I can't deny how much love, thought and effort Square Enix put into this one and to that, I tip my hat and again, great job on the video Digi!

      @ObviousHUN Před 4 lety +12

Cloud in the compilation was never emo. (KH and other entries I can't really defend) Two of his best friend died before his eyes, his hometown burnt front of him, he has heavy survival guilt, and geostigma was about to take one more preson he cherished in front of him. If he wasn't depressed I would be worried!
A lot of people ignore that the 2nd part of AC after the fight at the Forgotten City, Cloud learned to forgive himself and he moved past his depression. Cloud smiles.
Sorry if this comment came out harshly, and maybe you just meant other SE franchises Cloud made a cameo not the FF7 overall but I'm kinda tired people calling Cloud "emo"

I think Cloud’s VA in this game (Cody Christian) did a great job especially when you consider this was his first ever voice acting role. He’s only 25 and his main claim to fame before this was being in Teen Wolf (quite a few FF7R VAs are from Teen Wolf for some reason, maybe square is a fan)
He’s also a pretty good rapper which is cool: czcams.com/video/V9dHCKOJSgg/video.html

One of my issues with the english voice acting in this game is how particular characters like Cloud and Aerith, especially Cloud, feel like the corresponding actors are just trying to capture a specific personality type with their voice. Often times, their reads feel stilted, lacking the emotional ebb and flow dialogue actually has when its spoken. I know this to be an issue in performances from people who don't have that much experience voice acting; and this also tends to happen when the actors just read out their lines per the emotion they were told to do it in rather than performing the nuances of the emotion as if the line of dialogue was actually being experienced in real time (It's the difference between reading a line angrily and acting in a convincingly angry way).
I often found myself listening to Cody Christian's take on Cloud versus Takahiro Sakurai's and asking: why is it that Cody and Sakurai's performances aim to do the same thing (that is, portray Cloud as this capable but ultimately dorky kid always trying to be the coolest guy in the room by putting on an aloof facade) and yet Sakurai still captures that overcompensating dorky attitude while giving Cloud a multitude of emotions when he speaks? Meanwhile Cody sounds tired and flat, as he doing his best to do imitate what he thinks sounding cool is. And before you say that's the point of Cloud's character, I COMMAND YOU TO STOP!! because you can still assess the quality of an intentional performance and determine whether the intent is a result of good acting or misplaced direction. My point is that both Sakurai and Cody are aiming to make Cloud come off that way, except one performance still makes Cloud sound like he has an array of emotions while the other doesn't do it as well.

@@MrMoises621 I'm a huge fan of seiyuu and Sakurai was Cloud for me (among a plethora of whimsical characters like Osomatsu and Reigen). Burton was ok but given the material he had to work with and the fact that I found his voice a bit too nasally for Cloud, I never truly enjoyed his take and given I'm more biased towards Sakurai, I didn't feel the need to make myself get used to him. When there's an original version in Japanese that has an English version, for any kind of media, I almost always err on the side of the original with extreme prejudice, even when the English version is, for the most part, OK.
Having said that, I actually prefer Christian as Cloud and a whole bunch of other eng VAs here to the JP original (goddamn I love Tifa's English voice here way more than the JP one), which I've been enjoying all this time. I didn't think I'd ever say this but there you have it. If Sakurai was Cloud, Christian is even more Cloud than Cloud himself. I didn't need to get used to him, he had me at hello. I'll admit I only checked out the English voices out of curiosity given that the lines seemed to be scripted more naturally than before and there's a whole new cast but once i did, I absolutely did not feel the need to switch back and only checked out the JP voices the second time around. And even then I found myself missing the English voices. This has never happened before. It's usually the other way around.
So I don't feel the same way you do about Christian's performance as Cloud, mainly because early game Cloud's development is more subtle, and I actually think Christian in all his inexperience may have coincidentally nailed it better than Sakurai, who in all his years of being Cloud, I feel, sometimes over emote for Cloud in this early stage. I'm not saying you're wrong and I'm right but I think we all have different takes on Cloud when it comes to the minor details and for yours, Sakurai works better while for me, Christian does. I'm not sure if he'll be able to deliver when Cloud does go through more significant development (though he does show very promising signs) but as far as part one goes, I'll give the point to him over Sakurai.
I'm not saying this lightly because, like I said, I'm usually extremely biased towards original JP voice casting and Sakurai is one of my all time faves but this is the one game actually prefer the English version over the Japanese.

@@wokmeng *and I actually think Christian in all his inexperience may have coincidentally nailed it better than Sakurai*
See, and that's the sentiment that I just cannot get behind. Trust me, I get the idea that to you, Cody SOUNDS and BEHAVES the way you've always envisioned Cloud being in FF7, but for me, I don't find the performance authentic because as you've noted, the performance only feels more accurate than Sakurai's by coincidence. Cody gives a decent performance as Cloud but there are quite a few times that I can hear the awkwardness in his delivery, which is by no means intentional (Yes, you can evaluate the difference between someone giving an awkward performance by the skill of their acting versus that awkwardness being the result of a roughly-acted line).
Now granted, an argument can be made for a performance feeling superior because it comes of as more authentic. For example, a person might say that finding a legitimate child or adolescent actor to play a child in an animated work would lead to a more authentic product over assigning the role to an adult who could potentially give a better acting performance, but not convincingly sound like a child. In such a case, it could be deemed that the child actor is the superior choice despite only giving a decent performance compared to the seasoned adult actor, an argument that i find has validity to it, and to an extent, can even agree that the authenticity would be preferable over guaranteeing a stellar acting performance. So yea, while an argument can be made that Cody Christian's performance captures that supposed authenticity, I would argue it actually fails at nailing that emergent coincidental superiority that a child actor with decent acting skills can achieve being place in the role of a kid.
See, there this false belief that child actors being awkward in their acting can be handwaved away as "oh, they're just children, it makes the role feel more genuine;" except we tend to forget that there are children who can ACTUALLY ACT and give a veritable performance because they're both talented and can satisfy the credibility of a child's vocals and behaviors (in other words, "they're just kids; it makes for an authentic performance" is not an excuse). If a child actor were to attempt to convincingly portray themselves as going through a super traumatic experience, I would want to be convinced that what I'm engaging with is a real scenario of a child overwrought with anxiety and pain. While their childish mannerisms and vocal inflection is one part of the illusion, their ability to present relatable and persuasive symptoms through their acting is what's going to sell me on the bit, not some presumed authenticity based on the assumption that children actors, having not had the same experience as adult actors, are not going to be as convincing in selling certain emotions. Furthermore, let's say there are natural errors in the childs' speech like improper annunciation of words or uncontrolled stammering; those natural errors aren't a result of poor acting, but rather the articulation limits of your average child. While some directors might try to correct for those flaws, a more perceptive director would probably leave those imperfections in there because there's an emergent quality boost that comes from such authenticity in those behaviors.
That whole tangent was meant to come back to the point concerning Cody's Cloud, in that I don't sense any of that authenticity: his lines aren't stilted out of some genuine feeling of awkwardness or aloof behavior; they're stilted because of a weakness in the acting/delivery. This results in the shattering of any possible illusion of Cody's performance feeling authentic as a result of natural errors, because his stiltedness isn't a natural error. While Cody does communicate Cloud's awkwardness in some clear ways, his stilted voice acting isn't one of them; or rather, I should say that the stilted delivery of some his lines shouldn't be considered as a winning part of the performance. I wouldn't necessary say it's wrong to feel like the stilted way Cody gives his lines enhance the performance as yea, I do believe in emergent aspects of acting coming from unintended circumstances; I just don't find it to be a good illusion of genuine awkwardness. That being said, I think you are justified in feeling the opposite of me regardless;after all, who am I to say that Cody's stilted performance cannot ever be seen as a plus to the performance and to cementing the image of Cloud's personality traits regardless of whether or not the performance feels natural.
To wrap up, I find Cody's Cloud doesn't have the same level of polished emotional inflections and vocal patterns in his speech in the same way Sakurai does. This is why Sakurai's take on Cloud is my preferred one in the remake, as his performance finds a way to capture the standoffish yet socially awkward behavior his temperament is defined by, all the while keeping him an aloof and awkward personality without having him come off as a stilted sounding individual. That's not Sakurai overemoting; that's him speaking much more closely to the way an actual person would talk, even with Cloud's mannerisms. I want to make it clear that Cody's performance isn't bad; I just find it to be Ok; some notable flaws in the performance, but it also contains plenty of promise going forward into the future.
PS. I think Britt Baron does a good job as Tifa. I'd probably say she's one of the better voice actors in this game along with Max Mittelman (who has a better pedigree than most of the voice actors in this game in terms of voice talent despite his role as Red XIII being more subdued); however, I think Ayumi Ito as Tifa is PERFECT and will continue to be so. Now the disparity between Ayumi and Britt performance isn't as significant as that of Sakurai's and Christain's, I just think Ayumi performance is more polished and refined compared to Britt's. Look no further than the moment Tifa and Cloud share in chapter 13. When Tifa breaks down and cries, eliminate whatever biases you may have and tell me which one sounds closer to an authentic cry.

@@MrMoises621 You made some fair points but I don't think we're judging the actors from the same perspective. I am very familiar with Sakurai but I don't know Christian, tbh. I actually have 0 interest in Eng VAs outside of their portrayal of a character I'm interested in and I don't feel inclined to check out their other works the way I do with JP VAs. I still know nothing about Christian beyond him being in Teen Wolf and 25yo and is apparently a decent rapper thanks to OP and I'd like for it to stay that way.
So what I'm saying is, for me, Cloud sounds great in FF7R part 1 to me
with Christian's voice and portrayal. This means that based on the output, I like Cloud having his voice and manner of speech better (even if it's only happenstance) than I do Sakurai's although I still love Sakurai's portrayal as much as I ever did because Sakurai is genuinely a good VA, and not just for Cloud. And like I said, I'm not sure if I can say the same as what I am now when it comes time for Cloud to experience major character shifts but as far as part 1 goes, Christian gives me even stronger early!Cloud vibes than Sakurai. I understand that it's the other way for you.
For example, you probably like the way Sakurai's Cloud sounded more pressed when Jessie queried him about his relationship with Tifa during the 1st bombing mission at the very start of the game because in your head, thats a more appropriate reaction from Cloud. I prefer Christian's more emotionally stilted delivery because that fits better in my head for early!game Cloud. Why? Because it makes his breakdown with the tearing down of his early persona all the more complete and sweet to me in the future which is why I'm also scared and hoping hard that Christian will do a decent job then.
(Sorry forgot to address the Tifa VA bit. I agree the JP actors do an overall better job emoting, given their skill and experience not just as a VA, but as a VA for this particular franchise. Voice quality wise though, I like Baron's over Ito's. I like her lower tones and because her performance is overall good, I decided I prefer listening to her over Ito.)

There are lots of people whining about SE padding this out only for the sake of cashgrab but I feel it's for people like you (and a whole bunch of other fans to whom FF7 really burrowed deep like that other gaming youtuber, Max Dood) that this game was made. You really get the sense that the devs know that they've only got one chance to do this right, and they decided to listen to their hearts with the company willing to back them up. This isn't just work for them, it's a passion project and it's a shame some people out there can't see this.
They could trim it down a lot sure but now that we know what the game is like padded, there's so much people will miss out on if they had gone down that route just to satisfy the more impatient fans out there. If this was a different, less important game in people's minds, then it won't matter as much but given this game's history and place in people's hearts, and not the mention the years it took for them to finally decide to do this, I feel the scenic route is the only way to really do justice to this piece of work. And considering people are actually putting in more than 50 hours of gameplay and then replaying it multiple times, I don't think the devs made the wrong choice.
Padding out the Midgar portion is, for the most part, justified in my books given there are well-loved characters that never got fleshed out in this part of the game and Midgar and the events that transpired there are such a huge part of FF7 itself as a game. Of course, I hope they don't overdo or underdo it in future parts but I think we should be quite safe given how much respect and care the developers seem to have for this subfranchise.
They could hold out and release it all at once but with just part 1 already clocking in at 40-50 hours if you do all the sidequests and optional battles, I don't think it's feasible to release the game in its entirety all at once. For one, they won't know if the reception they'll get for the direction they took with the game would be favorable and for another, people would be waiting for a long, long time and lose hope all over again as the game may get stuck in development hell and get watered down or scrapped altogether.
The time it requires to finish this project in a way that does justice to the OG and the personal ideals of fans may not be something that some developers, actors (RIP Keiji Fujiwara) and even gamers have. This way, even if some developers and gamers can't stick around long enough to see this entire project through, the ones that do would already have experience and fresh blood among the devs would have a precedent to follow. And even if future instalments aren't as good (which I'm semi-confident won't be the case) there's always this part to fall back on.
Also, let's not forget that time moves in a linear fashion and hardware becomes more updated and developed as time passes. So, dividing it into multiple parts would also mean later parts of the game may be developed on even higher spec engine for newer gen consoles as hardware gets updated and as such, look and play even better.
Given there's already an OG and knowing what it made us feel when it ended, I find it truly uplifting that this new journey won't be ending for a long time to come, regardless of whether or not I'll be around to see the end of it. If this ends up earning SE a shit ton more than if they were to just simply release everything all at once, with the sincerity and passion they've shown (if some people don't see it, that's on them not the devs because it's there plain as day to see), as long as they keep up this level of earnestness, I say they would've more than earned it.
(Note: I get it if newer players find it draggy but I think this game was made by fans for fans first and foremost. I think newer players who are more hungry for gameplay and less patient about storytelling should probably play the OG first if they find the remake excessively padded. Older purist type fans who have a problem with the storytelling and characterization....well, ya can't make everyone happy. I have to admit I've got 0 problems with the charactertization and while the storytelling is fine to me for the most part, there are parts of it where the devs decision made me go *insert puzzled guy meme*. Still, it's overall good enough for me to still have high hopes for the rest.)

I'm glad you had a truly great time. Think there is honestly a lot to praise about it. Think that they did a lot of good with the technical side of it. A really good looking game. Midgar looked fantastic and I liked experiencing as much of it as we were allowed to.
The gameplay overall was fun and I like the ways they tried to keep all the weapons relevant depending on preference. It was also nice that they made sure to give motivation to switch around with characters or use different weapons to gain those skills.
I'll be honest...I don't like where they went with the story. Because the title feels like a lie. They didn't remake FF7. They decided to make a sequel. This is the third act of Dragon Quest XI. They want to make their own FF7 and do their own original story. I can understand people wanting to create their own thing. But, I'm out. I haven't loved what they've tried with the FF series for several games now. And this was honestly my last hope that I'd get really invested again. I'll put my copy aside, let others enjoy it, and just move on. No thanks. It's a shame since in terms of the overall package it is pretty fantastic. But what I don't like about it is a deal breaker.

I personally had mixed feelings about the game play Mind, I only played the Demo but the Story from what I've seen so far in Playthroughs is Great and the Amount of Passion I've seen the Fans have is nice to see

I could see them putting it as a mini game in the Gold Saucer, except this time it actually will be challenging.
Loved how they implemented it into this game though. No need to make it a challenge. It would’ve been a shame if you really had to focus on the button presses and miss the spectacle.

Curious if you've heard about the Sephiroth pronoun thing? Since it's something they couldn't really translate into other languages.
Basically, up until he goes completely power mad Sephiroth uses the slightly more formal version of "I" called "watashi" when referring to himself and afterwards he uses the more informal and somewhat masculine "ore". In pretty much all of the remake, Sephiroth uses "watashi", as he should this early in the story, up until the scene with just him and Cloud at the end where he uses "ore". To Japanese players this ac ts as a huge red flag about Sephiroth, but unfortunately there's not really a way for them to put that subtle change into English with the way the original game's script was done.

Well tifa and areif actual play style and no chocies in dialog beside adventure choices like picking cloud clothes.
Makes them alot better and makes cloud feel worse compared to ff7 cloud in certain areas like getting The perfect dress and to be only reward with cloud just sitting there instead hopping around trying to avoid don corneo..

Imma just leave a summary of my personal thoughts on this game:
Gameplay- Fantastic combat system providing more action while still having a ton of strategy involved.
Pacing- The most artificially extended adaptation of a story not seen since The Hobbit trilogy. Impactful moments are stepped on and straight forward moments in both story and gameplay are made overly complex just so Square can run out the clock to get to a length worthy of $60.
Story- The biggest bold-faced lie in gaming since MGS 2, but without Kojima at the height of his storytelling prowess to bring it through. A misguided attempt at meta-commentary that lacks subtlety and tacks on a ton of Nomura-isms that muddle the original game's themes and messages. (And yes, I know he didn't write the script, but he was the scenario writer and the game's final chapters are crammed with his most beloved tropes). The game deliberately pulls a fast one on you to get its point across and in doing so pissed off myself and plenty of others who've waited for a remake of this game for years.

Charles Stiles, Mystery Diners it is a remake through and through, i don't think i was lied in any moment. The developers said with all words that there would be changes.

In the demo I fucking sucked ass, constantly using Cure and potions and it honestly turned me off from the game... but I decided to get it anyway and thankfully I enjoyed myself more the 2nd go around and did way better then continued to enjoy myself the entire way through, well maybe not entirely, that mechanical hand section and Hojo's lab were complete borefests. I then lost my save because I got stuck in a safe mode loop and had to do a factory reset and redo it all over again, but I did it anyway cause it was just really god damn fun. I can't wait for the next one.

I never played the original, or any FF game for that matter. I got the remake and, well, I got the original on ps4, then ps1, then the chinese NES bootleg. And I saw Advent Children, Last Order and machinabridged, and played Crisis Core. I don't even like RPGs. Yeah I don't think that statement to be true, good sir.
