When I first saw semi-canon sensei, it hit me.
He was smiling, just like that Arona's drawing, but his eyes weren't smiling at all.
He tasked himself with the responsibility of being the adult figure who must guide all of Kivoto's girls, being the teacher who accompany them on their journey of growing up, and until now he's been doing quite great at it. But perhaps too great...
The students are quirky and colorful, nobody is the same as the last, yet sensei somehow always manage to find the right way to act around each of them, either a caring friend, a stern paternal figure, or a weirdo who licks feets. Which make it extra difficult to pin down his personality aside from being a self-insert nice guy, and maybe that's the point.
Perhaps we, the players, have been playing as Sensei's mask all this time, as his many facades, but never his true self. We're playing as what he's trying to be, a good teacher. Sure, we may see some semblances of a personality from time to time, but who's to say those aren't flaws that sensei gave himself to became closer to his students, to be a *good teacher.* He's so obsessed with his students, that his desire to help them *overshadow the rest of his personality* , we may have never seen his true self. It's hidden, making him perfect for self-insert.
Being a teacher/sensei is the most grueling task in the world, after all.
