After creating their empire, and subjugating Western Xia (Xi Xia) and the northern part of the Jin domain, the Mongols of Genghis Khan started looking towards the west. The actions of the ruler of the Western Liao (Qara Khitai) Kuchlug and the shah of the Khwarezmian empire Ala ad-Din Muhammad II gave the great khan a reason to attack Central Asia and Eastern Iran. Prosperous cities were turned to rubble and the population was massacred during a three-year campaign led by Genghis, Ogedei, Jochi, Chagatai, Tolui, Jebe, and Subutai. The son of Muhammad II - Jalal ad-Din Mingburnu was able to resist the invaders in the battles of Parwan and Indus river... The Mongol invasions were just starting...

Jalals escape across the Indus deserves a lot more attention. The battle was one the toughest Genghis had fought against a foreign foe in his career and victory came only when the flanking movement of Jebe ( across a mountain) succeeded. As a last attempt to turn the tide, Jalal charged the mongol centre with his heavy horse and nearly split the army. When it failed with Jalal fighting in the frontline, he turned his horse and jumped of a cliff 30 meters below into the river. It is said that Genghis ordered his men not pursue him for he was awestruck by Jalal's bravery in battle as well in the matter of his escape. He said: "How can such a weak ruler produce such a brilliant son! "

It is said that respect was earned by both sides, as when the news of Genghis' passing reach Jalal, he is said to have mourned the death of his only equal and rival under the blue sky

Genghis Khan The USA has need of your help against North Korea great khan
Completely agree ^^... EEEEExcept for Civ 5, there Mongols are jsut a laughing stock, sorry great Khan but you're misrepresented in this game :/
Why? Just accept their leadership and be part of a more modern society than the rest! Mongols were quite strict on their wartime policies, friends would be reward, foes destroyed.
You join the Mongols with open arms, you get a whole host of great rewards. Improved trade, better communications, safety of passage, cultural exchanges, and early globalisation. Only downside is the occasional massacres the mongols brought onto rebellions. Also, you get to enjoy 3 great civilizations and cultures in the muslims, persians, and chinese! Great food, brothels, arts, and academics! Another downside is disease. With safe passage and borderless communications, it's easier for diseases and viruses to spread. Although hygene and medicine could have prevented that
I'd rather be an "oriental" than a European in the medieval era. The West at the time is pretty much Cambodia today
Thanks for Lord because nowadays, Mongol become likely a little white kitten 🐈🐈

Mongols being non-discriminatory during a time of religious and cultural conflict in Europe, so ahead of their time, yay?
Well, think Alexander. Pretty tolerant to everyone, but any sign of rebellion, and no matter if you are Greek or Persian or Phoenician, you are dead.
That makes massacres okay then? You libcucks think discrimination is worse than being slaughtered?

Achillez well I did read somewhere that he hated Muslims and killed them like drinking water.
So they are like democrats and USA today?! Destroying Libya or Syria in the name of diversity or freedom.
Killing over 90% of an entire empires population is pretty damn cruel.
Yeah, and also quite stupid economically.
Imagine putting blades through little kids.... that's what they did
No it’s not, the Mongols wouldn’t have survived the revolt if their weren’t a massive slaughter before hand.
It’s not the age of guns and modern weapon...you can’t handle a city with more than 1 million revolting, the only answer is to kill them all, reduce the population to a point where revolting is futile.
@@KingsandGenerals but at the same time, it led to nobody ever revolting. If they kept everyone alive, you'd see the Herat revolt 20 times over.
While the Khwarezmian army was in total larger than the Mongol army they never managed to concentrate their forces properly at other places than Parwan, thus allowing the Mongols to consentrate against them and defeat them in detail. It doesn't matter that you have 400.000 men to the enemy's 100.000 if you're only able to muster 60.000 of them while the enemy can bring all their 100.000 to bear.
Quality comment. March divided, fight united, indeed.
Indeed. It has been a method employed by SO many great commanders: Genghis Khan, Napoleon, Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Forrest, Hindenburg and Ludendorff, Rommel. Even Alexander the Great, famous for fighting battles against numerically superior enemies, would often achieve this on a tactical level at the decisive point of the battle(usually with himself at said decisive point at the head of his companion cavalry).
Yap, that's pretty much the lesson of this story. The mongolian army also had the advantage of insanely good mobility and discipline. This allowed them to concentrate their forces anywhere they wanted really fast, before the enemy could get their forces. Poor Kwarezmians, they never had a chance :(
1987MartinT Yeah I watched a video by Montemayor where he goes extensively in this topic regarding Stonewall Jackson.
The 400 000 numbers is an obvious exaggeration though.
There's a story here in Mongolia that after the envoys were killed, Genghis Khan spent 3 days and 3 nights alone at Burkhan Khaldun, the most sacred mountain in Mongolia and the mountain that blessed his family with the mandate to rule, to commune with the Eternal Sky and ask him for guidance on what to do with the Khwarezmians. He then supposedly descended the mountain and proclaimed Tenger (the sky) himself demanded the end of Khwarezm. Also the reason molten gold and silver was poured into Inalchuk's orifices was because it was widely believed by the Mongols that he captured the merchants to quickly increase his own coffers thus it was a punishment for his greed. This was also confirmed to be the inspiration for GRRM and Khal Drogo's "crowning" of Viserys in ASOIAF.
Fuck off... We'll be back, don't worry.
it is will of Tenger that great mongol soldiers should convert to fake religion and guide the foolish sheeps.

Yeah, and soon we will cover Kalka, Legnica and Mohi, so it gets better (worse?).
Depends on whether you support the Mongols or not. ;) wink2
We all know, what happens when you try to resist them.
+temka088 "We all know, what happens when you try to resist them." --- You kick their asses so hard that they flee from battle before it even begins like Tatars did at Vienna when they heard that King Jan Sobieski is in command? ;P
+Kings and Generals "Yeah, and soon we will cover Kalka, Legnica and Mohi, so it gets better (worse?)" --- A mix of both perhaps. If you mention the battle of Racibórz that preceded the Legnica I'll be happy ;)
If you consider Ottomans, Mongols, you need to reevaluate the books that you have read on history. It's like calling Poles are Russians.
Constructing a false logical chain -> if poles are Russians, russians were tributaries to Mongols- > poles were tributaries to Mongolia? They look similar, dress similar, speak similarly and pray to a naked dude on a cross put on top of their buildings, i dont see a difference. ))
+temka088 I think you have serious problems with reading. I never called Ottomans Mongols. Read my comment once again. I was clearly referring to Tatars from Crimean Khanate.
The khwarezmi empire under the incompetent shah did indeed have a much bigger army than the mongols, some speculate a total of 500k across all his garrisons but the reason he failed to unite them was that firstly he believed the mongols to be poor at siege warfare (incorrectly) and that his garrisons would inflict heavy damage on raiding mongol armies....but secondly and mainly the reason shah didnt unite the majority of hos forces was being a tyrant he distrusted his own army and was advised not to unite his army due to high chance of them rebelling against him as he had a huge mercenary contingent in his armies who were not the most loyal type....I spent years researching the fall of Khwarezm and the struggle of the shah's son jalaludin againt the mongol. Btw this jalaudin was quite the man with an ambition to match even genghis himself, it is said when the situation at the indus river battle near kalabagh became untennable and the prince had to retreat through hordes of mongols and making it to a sharp cliff he rode straight down it to the river, the great khan was so impressed by his bravery and determination that he ordered his archers not to fire arrows at him and let him escape that day..
Great Khaan will never do that. You don't know our mentality. Hehe. HE IS KHAAN. He will never pursue a paltry prince who is worth even less than his sons and also betrayed his father. He just sent his general Subedei and one of his sons to find and kill him. That's all and don't write here your sick imaginations!!!

Just love this period of history. I'm from Kazakhstan and all Kazakh Khans were direct descendants of Chengis Khan (and his first son Jochi) This dinasty ruled here until 1847, when the last ruling Chingisid, national hero of Kazakhs, Kenesary Khan was killed by pro-Russian forces. We have a tribe Töre - which is direct descendants if Chengis Khan, and only Töre could become a Khan of Kazakhs. Even in Mongolia itself Chengis' dinasty didn't last so long
Well Chengis' dinasty didn't existed in first place.

George Kolev did mongols attacked india? If not? Why?
Love both, but separately please :D
Right so, they did raid India as it is mentioned in the video, but no major campaign was launched against them. 3 reasons - 1 They were constantly busy with some other front - China/Middle East/Europe. 2 The climate was absolutely terrible for them and 3 There was no envoy killing/assistance of an enemy. Jalal ad-Din's request for help from the Delhi Sultanate was denied.
George Kolev why is parwan not as famous as ain jalut
Jalal ul din - a heroic general and a symbol of hope for Central Asians even up until now. Legends say even Great Khan himself admired his courage.
Nevertheless a fool of a father he had, who provoked Mongols and brought the worst genocide in the history of Turkic people of Central Asia
It is mentioned that Genghis actually praised the prince for his bravery in the Secret History of the Mongols. Genghis actually loved heroic commanders. He would always give a proper burial to an enemy general who chose to die in battle.

The genocide happened againsts Tajik(persian) people as those regions were filled with Tajiks and the Turks were minority
Although both groups were massacred
It nearly destroyed my country and annihilated all its population :(
I remember during my history session in school we studied that the person who captured those envoys and merchants was relative of kings mother and under influence of his mother he didn't even punish the governor
Yep, the Khwaresmian government was not stable and the court was full of intrigues.
The mother of the Shah was power hungry and was basically manipulating Shah Mohammed. She also had a a stupid and unnecessary feud with her Grandson Jalal Al Dins Mother. Both women belonged to different Turkic groups. Genghis Khan knew of the family feud and basically used it to his advantage by forging Royal documents with a stolen Royal seal and using those documents to further cause disunity within the Kwarizmians. The Kwarizmian Royal family were morons. The Father and Grandmother helped destroy their Royal dynasty and Empire whilst the Grandson made enemies with the Seljuks and Abbasids. Also the Grandson Jalal Al Din massacred thousands of Armenians and Georgians when sacking their cities to obtain funds for further rebellions against the Mongols. The Kwarizmian Royal family were a lost cause.
Are u from iran
@Ariyan Eighty wow nice
Good to meet Persians😊
even if the sultan of the khwarezm didn`t kill the mechants
the mongols would of found a reason or made up a one to invade the khwarezm
I tend to agree with that.
Perhaps the Mongols would have found another reason to invade Khwarezm had the Shah not been so foolish, but before that they would put more efforts on conquering China and the rest of East Asia. The Mongols would then be assimilated like all steppe invaders of China had been and perhaps look elsewhere? Kublai Khan did plan on invading the Indonesian islands after all and might not stop there. Who's up for some Mong-stralian beef?
The envoys were always extremely cocky and would taunt the rulers pretty much baiting them to war.

Imagine how diffirent history could have been if the Shah had not decided to kill those merchant and the ambassador.
it was a matter of time before they found a reason to invade
yes... i agree that i think mongols would find any reason to attack khawarez anyway.
I think they might've invaded China instead, *before* invading Khwarezm. Genghis Khan would be the founder of the Yuan dynasty a little earlier. Then either of these things might happen:
a) they get bogged down in China trying to contain possible rebels during the next years
b) the riches they get from China allow them to conquer even more land to the west than they did on our timeline
I doubt about this part of story.
I think they really were spies, so Mongols anyway would invade.

One of the reason why Kuchlug was defeated was that he insisted in imposing Nestorianism on the Muslim population in Western Liao which led them to back the Mongol invasion of Western Liao. For that reason he was one of the historical "candidates" for the origin for the legend of Prester John. The founder of Western Liao, Yelü Dashi, who defeated the Seljuk was another one such "candidate."
Yes, good note, indeed the local Muslim population joined the Mongols, and probably were in there armies.
True. But it seems Kuchlug mostly went after the Muslims. Part of the reason why must be because his wife, the princess of Western Liao, was Buddhist.
Kings and Generals no Muslims fought mongles
Fun fact, Western Liao was the successor state of the Liao Dynasty in China who fought against the Song and were driven out by the JIn.

Jalal ad-Din Mingburnu ended up in India and after spending 3 years there came back to Iran to continue to lead resistance against the Mongols for several more years.
Yep, we will talk more about him.
You guys call your biggest empire "Osmanlı" instead of "Ertoğruli" or something like that, and I am the bad guy? :p
Kings and Generals well osman was his real name, jalal ad din was not...
There is a small shrine in Sirch_ Kerman_ Iran believed to be his.
What a badass
Great series. Perhaps one day you'll cover all the steppe "empires", from the Rouran to the Khazars and the last Khaganates in Western Eurasia.
Good video. That ride across the desert was amazing
Another Amazing documentary!! Great job!
Thank you for watching :)
Great video, and the timing of this series (assuming it’s still ongoing) is impeccable since Extra History also started their own series on the life of Genghis Khan, making these two series perfect companion pieces to each other.
Yeah, and we actually had no idea. :-)
Kings and Generals
It’s alright... it’s still appreciated.
Kings and Generals
Btw, is your series still ongoing?
It is. At least 4 more episodes on the way.
Kings and Generals
Awesome!
Julius Caesar: I'm going to conquer people and slaughter them.
Temujin G. Khan: Hold my beer.
Another brilliant video👌
keep up the good work.
Thank you, we will. :-0
thank you for this amazing video. hope to see more.
Thank you! Working on the second season. There are 4 more episodes in this one.
Thank you a lot for interesting video. This the most tragic page in our history. Iranians were very traumatized during it. The libraries and universities were burned, canals were destroyed. The Empire could not rise on its feet for the next 300 years, during which we also experienced Timur the lame.
Thanks for watching!
First the Arabs enslaved Iran, then Turks and then Mongols. Yeah it's very unfortunate.
@jhon carry They did enslave Iran. They forced their religion and committed atrocities.
@@grimgoreironhide9985
I don't know what is wrong with you but I feel you got issues! Islam came through the hearts of the Iranians so as other Muslim countries all around the world, otherwise it couldn't stay until now!
@@chek887 What do you mean. I only stated facts.
Yet again, the best. Thanks a lot. Cannot wait the Mongol expedition army led by Jebe, Batu and Subedei battles.
Thanks for watching! Working on the next Mongol video. :-)
The first thing i do when i go on CZcams to see if you guys upload new video . also GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS
Thank you very much! :-)
Amazing work as always👌🏻
keep it up
Thank you! Planning to.
Is this where sultan got the viserys tagaryen treatment?
Mati khorasani the most memorable mongol story is where they were forbidden to spill royal blood, so they put a king inside a bag and kicked him to death. GOT got nothing on the Mongols.
"Guyuk Khan took care of one of his rivals by sewing every orifice on her body shut and pushing her into a river."
No! It was Inalchuq who got the "crown for a king" hehe.
they rolled up the last Abbasid caliph in a carpet and trampled him to death w horses for the same reason :o
oh someone beat me to it lol
''From 2 million to 200,000''
This is not a conquest , this is a genaside💀
Pretty much. The Mongols would not form a real administration in this region until much later.
@@KingsandGenerals nice spelling
The mongols had to shed some of the population to properly control so much land. It was natural rules of wars for those days.
It definitely was not "shedding some population". This level of savagery is not seen in any other empire up until that time.
Well they asked for it Mongol empire didn't let them disappointed.
As always, fantastic work!
Thank you very much!
You guys are one of the best channels on CZcams.
Thank you very much!
Genghis Khan: "I tried to be nice for like once, and you've gone and killed my envoys... Welp... i guess ill just wipe you out of the face of the planet then. And yes! If they still believe the planet is flat, kill them EXTRA brutally!"
It goes like this for them...
"I killed an envoy."
"So? Why are you panicking now?"
"The envoys are from Genghis Khan."
"Oh..."
@@Themultiroleman not just once but three times.
What a stupid comment.
This is how an ignorant people talks, total bullshit 😂
You can't get people rebel against you when there are no people that can start the rebel in the first place
Yeah, but they also can't pay taxes. :-)
appreciate it!!! great series
Guys & gals, a thousand thanks for your vids, which are superb. Yet speaking candidly on the relation of music to spoken material: the music tracks, though consistently suitable, well conceived, and well performed, are a bit “up front” in the audio mix. A lowered dynamic in the former would, I believe, maximize the listener’s absorption of spoken text. Many thanks, again.
So far this is my favorite series.
Happy to hear that. :-)
Your channel is awesome!! Great work. I hope to see Vlad Tepes and his guerrilla fight against the Ottoman campaign, or maybe the Battle of Vaslui lead by Stefan the Great. Probably the most significant battle of both Moldavia and Walachia.
Thank you! We are planning to cover Vaslui, at least. Maybe one or two more battles of Stefan the Great.
Always loving your videos...
Exelent explained with graphics about Genghis Khan thank you sir
Been waiting for this one. Quite possibly the most brutal case of Mongol retribution in the face of an arrogant enemy that didn't know who they were fucking with.
There will be more. :-)
Do Subutai's invasion of Kievan Rus next!
It will be covered.
Ahh good work guys... Finally I’ve found a great chanel greetings from Turkey...
Thank you!
very informative and authentic videos ........splendid work
Thanks for watching!
CONTINUE THE MONGOL SERIES
We will.. Full schedule is posted on Patreon.
Love this site! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Well done. Thanks for naming sources.
Great topics, great content, great channel. Really interesting. Keep it up! ;)
Thank you!
Jalal al-din was a fearsome warrior and hero so underrated 👏👏
He was a idiot who makes mongols conquest middle-east. He destroyed middle east himself. Mongols conquested it without war.
been at the ruins and saw the remainings of Otrar city in Kazakhstan. The bones, ancient ceramic utensils, burnt woods and other kinds of remainings still rest there and all that looks breathtaking... though sooner or later after the reconstruction of the city will be done they are gonne be lost correspondingly i think... Btw, awesome documentary video!
Very nicely done as usual!!!
Thank you! :-)
My pleasure. Although something bothers me here. I have always read that the Khwarizmian army outnumbered the Mongol army. What source(s) say otherwise? I really would like to find out.
Nice job! Can't wait for the next one!
If it's possible I'll like to suggest making a video on Attila the Hun.
Thank you! Yes, it is something that we do consider.
The Mongol Empire's conquest of the Khwarezm Empire seems to show how strong the Mongol Empire's military power was.
몽골제국의 이슬람 호라즘제국, 압바스제국 정복은 몽골제국이 얼마나 군사력이 강한지 보여주는것같습니다.
ty again for ur amazing document
pls creat another documents about mongols
+Mohammad Ghezelli thanks, more on the way!
"Don't give unnecessary offense" one of the rules of wisdom that have been wrote down more than once. The Shah brought it on himself.
Srsly your documentary are more better and better, its really amazing
I always watch this while I ate my lunch XD
Thank you! We are trying to improve with each new video. :-)
When you realize that wiping out a faction over not accepting a trade agreement in total war is actually historically accurate
we have done worse in total war though and u know that :D
@@cjay5641 genghis khan was just playing total war in real life
@@nikolascoffey6453 I usually sack same kingdom and enslave population every 2 turns so that they will never rise nor develop 😂
Hi I'm from Iran :) your videos are so close to the history I learned by learning from Elders ,Adels or reading the true skrifts left in Iran and some from central Asia, since the true history is left in skrifts in the area, again your videos details almost the same as the true history, ty & keep it up ;)
Well done as usual.👍🏻
+Cyrus The Great thank you! :-)
very interesting and great job 👍🎬
It's crazy to think of one mad family of warlords knocking off 10% of the world's population.
It's said that when the mongol army came for the attack jalaluddin requested his father for giving him the position of commander against them(seeing his father was somewhat afraid)but he refused
Jalaluddin heriocly defeated the mongols himself(as in this vid)
The great khan himself admired him for his bravery!
And then after losing there are some views of what happened to him
1)he converted into a pious man(doing ibaadah all the time and saved his identity)
2)he was tricked and killed by some greedy man who killed him to take his clothes(which was expensive$$!)..
He was an evil man who killed Georgians and Armenians because they had money. He pillaged the Armenians and Georgians to gather funds because he needed it to continue the insurgency against the Mongols. Pious men are not excused from murdering innocent people because they belong to a different religion or refuse to give you money.
He failed the mend the hostility between his family and the Seljuks and Abbasids.
And the people who killed him we're Kurdish highwaymen because he killed one of their relatives years earlier and because the Seljuks paid them to kill him. They didn't kill him for his clothes, they killed him for revenge and easy money.
@@grimgoreironhide9985 Georgians and khazars backstabbed the shah
Actually he was killed by some kurds
Very nice video amazing information.
Great presentation!
