  • We climbed Nevado Mateo (Pico Mateo) in Huascarán National Park. Nevado Mateo's peak sits at 16,896 feet (5,510 m). This climb is 3 miles roundtrip (4.8 km) with a 1,575 feet (480 m) elevation gain, and is located among the stunning mountain peaks of Cordillera Blanca, the world's highest tropical mountain range in the world.
    The best time of year to climb #NevadoMateo is between April to November. You must hire a professional mountain guide to #climb this peak in Peru. You will see amazing views of Mount Huascarán, the tallest peak in Peru that stands at over 22,000 feet.
    We paid around $60 USD per person in September 2022 for the climbing adventure. We left #Huaraz #Peru at 3:30 am and arrived at the trailhead around 5:00 am. It took us 3 hours round trip to complete the climb.

      You would definitely appreciate it because it’s off the beaten path. Most people that go seem to be local Peruvians 🤙🏽 A lot of the videos we searched were vlogs in Spanish. Thanks for watching!

      This climb was surprisingly enjoyable haha! Mainly because it was only 3 miles. We aren’t huge mountain climbers either, but enjoy it once in awhile. If you have questions, let us know. Happy to help share plans and logistics. It was a good dip your toes in kinda climb. Up next we will share our trek to Machu Picchu 🙌🏼

    Interesting that it seems like the hike up wasn't as difficult as the trip back down. 😅
    A couple hours long hike sounds a bit more my speed from the usual.
    Hopefully you got some good sleep after you got back!

    • @HelenandTimTravel
      @HelenandTimTravel  Před rokem

      You’re spot on! Hiking downhill is always tougher for us because we both have knee issues. It did seem harder downhill this time around because the guide had to put some rope up on the steep and slick rocky sections. We like short and sweet adventures too!
      We were very sleep deprived after 2 straight days of trekking right before.

    NO CERTIFIED GUIDES NEEDED IN PERU. WHERE IS THE LAW STATING THIS REQUIREMENT

    • @HelenandTimTravel
      @HelenandTimTravel  Před 7 měsíci

      For this specific hike it was stated at the trailhead to have a certified mountain guide. We booked through a guide for this hike and never would’ve discovered it on our own. We love supporting the local economy and jobs too! 😬
