This is the brand new, recently released, SK Tools LP90 80200 90 tooth ratchet. It's been years since SK tools was seen as a competitor to the likes of snap on tools, Mac tools, and Matco tools but with their release of the lp90 lineup it marks a change where we see SK Tools rise as an affordable American made alternative to the big dogs. For the longest time, SK Tools have only ever made round head ratchets (SK did offer one when they were owned by Facom but I don't think it was USA made) so it's definitely nice to see them step up and create something new. hey buddy... 2 questions for ya... 1 have u done a comparison video between the sk & snapon yet? (cause ive looked & cant find it?) & 2 how is this ratchet holding up? im a long time sk user & im interested in this ratchet, but ive heard some negatives, so itd be good to know if its held up well? ...really enjoy ur videos, thanx & god bless man!

I have my grandfather's SK 3/8" round head rachet. I opened it up after decades of service. It was beautiful, no visible wear. It's my favorite rachet.
I've always liked SK Tools. They're tough as hell and they're priced incredibly competitively. What a great combination.

When I first got into my field about 16 years ago I bought a SK 1/4 and 3/8 socket ratchet set. I'm still using them today. I've never had a issue at all. No breaking except one socket because I put a huge breaker bar on it which completely understandable. No chrome flaking I've never once had one jam or skip. I think their damn good for the price but they were bought a few years back and I haven't used the new stuff yet. Funny thing is Snap On came in and saw my tools and tried to rag on me but mine are waaayy cheaper and maybe even more reliable.
They want over $90 for this ratchet and theyve cheaped out on the green now

I'm 50 years old and been using SK socket sets since I was 4. Hard to beat! Glad SK upped there game on this ratchet. It'llbe a welcome addition to the tool box. Excellent video/review btw👍

Since I've lived in Chicago since the late 1990s, I have a soft spot for SK tools. Because they started out in Chicago, there have been huge amounts of SK tools sold in the Chicago area over the years. You can go to flea markets in and around the city and find old SK tools that are still very usable because they've always made very high quality and durable tools.
I think their best design was actually the original style SK pro round-head ratchets. The ratcheting and reverse mechanisms on these are very reliable and stay smooth for a very long time in between cleanings. If you keep them clean, they can last for years before you need to open them up, clean out old grease, and then lubricate them again.
Back around 2002, I visited their old factory in Brighton Park hoping to trade in a very very old ratchet (possibly 1940s or so) that had a worn reverse mechanism. The guys at the factory told me to take it to their distribution center in the suburbs. I went there next, and the people in the office let me trade it in for a brand new 1/2 inch drive SK pro ratchet, which I still use to this day. I've purchased other SK tools new over the years. I love both SK sockets and SK combination wrenches because they're a tiny bit thinner than tools from most other manufacturers, which allows them to get into certain very tight spots in car engine compartments that are not accessible with other tools.
This new ratchet looks like a quality tool, but (1) I worry that the reverse mechanism may not stand the test of time and may become rough with age, but this is just speculation on my part. (2) I really appreciate when ratchets have a quick release (although old SK pros don't have these either) and (3) I like when pear-head ratchets have a recessed reverse-direction selector.
With all that said, this is probably a great ratchet. I just don't know if it will still be great after 20 years of use. I know for a fact that my old SK pro round head ratchets will still work great after 20 years as long as I don't abuse them.
I'm sure I am in the minority but I wish that grip was knurled like the older SKs. In my opinion they had that knurling perfect.
I dont think you're in the minority, Many say they want it and SK currently have a mock up of a knurled handle version. But I personally like the smooth handle and of coarse the price tag!
Pat Clark-Barnes well said. rough enough to grip when greased up but smooth enough to feel good in the hand.
I'd like to see SK with a contoured knurled handle.
Pat Clark-Barnes knurled collects grease and grime. Not to easy to clean if your doing auto work. But a good grip is desirable
acetone and degreaser.
My father passed down a set of combination wrench set and a set of s&k socket set back in 1969. Still works as good as the first day I got them.
I've owned my SK ratchet set since 1976 and is still my favorite. Still have my SK open and closed wrench set from 1976 too,best tools ever!

did not know sk was still around...one of my old tenants gave me a bunch of sk ratchets and sockets about 15 years ago...he was an army helicopter mechanic for 20 years and he retired to florida. he knew i liked shadetree mechanic work so he gave them all to me..they work great and no issues at all.

I have SK tools from the early 70's when i started doing mechanical work . I have 2 S-K 1/2 inch drive round head ratchets and have never rebuilt them. The wrenches are top shelf tough. I have a lot of Snap On too, and the S-Ks were worth every dime. In 20 years from now i will have to decide which of my nephews will get them, and likely they will still have a full set to hand to their kids.
I'm far from being a mechanic. Or rarely work on things unless they need to be fixed but I find these videos soothing! I think I'm entering a new phase in age (gonna be 47)... Tools are my new thing ⚙️🛠️
I work in a shop for a profession and I have snap on ratchets, watching this video and knowing this exists makes me want to try it out. Maybe in a week or so I'll buy one and maybe do a real work review on it or get with you and you can make a video
I still have my SK tool ratchets from the 70s. They have never slipped busted my knuckles or had to be replaced. They can be a pain in the butt in a tight spot to reverse so this looks interesting

Been using mine for 4 years maybe,I missed the original lunch so I painted the switch green and clear coated it, it holds ups very well I grap it more then my snap on f80 simply because the handle length is a 1/4 or 1/2 in longer. The snap on is a bit smother. I taken the the lp90 from the garage to automotive manufacturing and dyno testing
I have a ton of s-k tools been using them for years great tools but that new Ratchet is bad Ass and sweet looking.
You absolutely put out the best hand tool videos, very professional looking. I plan on picking up the 1/4" drive models when they release them 3 or 4 years from now.....

SK is a great tool. Only issue with them is that you have to send off what breaks in order to get it warrantied. I live in Georgia and I'm also a automotive technician so being able to get tools warrantied in a timely manner is a huge issue and yes I have more than one ratchet but you always have a favorite that you pickup before anything else.

finally they put out something modern.
I wish these had been around when I was turning wrenches for a living. I'd still like to buy one to replace my old SK 1/4" drive ratchet, but only if I can also get a new blow molded case to fit my sockets and the new pear shaped ratchet.
I also had to dismantled this ratchet because mine was locking up...noticed that its from the green paint left inside the hole that tiny bearing and spring sits in. Bearing was just getting stuck, cleaned it out and works perfect! ( I used 1500 grit sandpaper )
u know, as many times as i have used a ratchet to get my truck back up & running & maintained i have nvr ever not once knew how the ratchet worked technically anyway 👍👍👍👍 got a new sub my friend.

Great video. About 15 years ago I bought a old pickup for the transmission. When I took the seat out I found a big half inch drive sk ratchet. It's tough as can be. I have no idea how old it is. The truck sat for a long time. But that ratchet is my go to ratchet hands down.. however I'd love to get a 80200 for a 3/8 drive.

I came across your vid while looking for a new ratchet. Great vid! My first socket set when I was a kid was a S&K in the metal green box.
Looks amazing. Even though I have too many ratchets I want one. This new ratchet will fill the vacuum left by Armstrong's maxx ratchets now that Armstrong is no longer in business. Beats paying 2-3 times for the Snap on equivalent.

If I may suggest, using a tool grease instead of a oil, oil tends to break down faster an doesnt last as long, grease tends to last an can be a protectant from dirt and water or moisture 🤓👍👍

It's great that S-K made a ratchet that looks like other professional ratchets, has a high tooth count and doesn't have that miserable knurled handle. The handle on my S-K 45170 drove me to a Snap-on F730 ratchet (long story) back in 1982. By comparison, the Snap-on was light-years ahead in design, operation and comfort. Perhaps this design will bring back others who had tried but left the brand. Nice fix on that spring tensioner, too. It was interesting that the internals were not greased, but instead had a coating of light oil. I think I would open it up and place some Super Lube in the cavity, which would make the gearing a tad smoother and quieter.

Usually only use a 1/4 drive in aviation so I’ll wait. Started buying Sk tools do to being made in America. Which most tool maker have now shifted to overseas.

I have have the sk mini 1/4 drive I have had over 20 years and have never had a problem with it I love it and now most of my 1/4 drive sockets are now sk I still have a few snap on most notably the 5/8 deep and shallow bought them used the only socket I am missing in the metric set is 4.5 deep and my standard set has more sockets then my tray will hold I have some of the 32 sizes that u no longer get

The old round head SK ratchet is probably one of the strongest ever made. Ratchets like their new one is much like what Snap-On has had for years. The pawls are the weak point. We'll see how the new one holds up. It does look like a nicely made piece.
Nice looking tool. I'm not crazy about using aluminum for the selector lever but the overall shape and size of the ratchet was long overdue.
Now SK just needs to add a locking flex head w/ cushion grip
And a push button lock on for the socket. Then it would be perfect. Its really hard to find one with all these features, I'm still looking.

As long as the socket doesn't fall back off after releasing the button when it's supposed to hold a socket, like a craftsman does.
---you really need the lock. I wouldn't buy a ratchet without a push button lock. When you have extensions on the ratchet it can get heavy and your extensions and sockets can fall off. Same as the extensions, you can get extensions that lock on your socket. So useful on working on modern cars where you don't want to loose a socket down in the engine bay because you can spend a lot of time looking for your socket.

the lock lets go at the most inopportune time (long extension in a hole) and you didn't even touch the button.
So if they fix that I'd consider trying a locker style.
First time it released by itself, I'd drive by the factory and bust a window out with it as I threw it back to them.
MrTheHillfolk I've never had a problem with the button having such a light actuation pressure that the socket falls off. The actuation pressure on then ones we've had/have is pretty strong; definitely not light enough to actuate as easily as you described.
The thing I like about Dual 80's is that they come with many different lengths. Most of them make bugger all noise at all.

Meshed is the word you were looking for. Internally, it looks very similar to the Snap On dual 80's.
Also, instead of oil, try synthetic grease. Will make it silky smooth.

Very good observations. I would like to add that the handle looks a bit short and maybe a bit thin, and I agree, the selector switch scratching up the finish needs to be addressed, I have some high-end ratchets that do the same thing and I don't like it. Oh, and I also agree that the placement of the SK logo is too high.
Hey again sir very nice post. To me, as a old S-K type guy the attractive part of them is the handle it's much more comfortable than the other brands, seems like they copied the type I don't like

Good job as usual I use silglyde I think that's the spelling in my ratchets it's a silicone lube for garage doors but works good in heads
I really wish they'd kept the green anodized lever. One of my favorite line of ratchets, too bad they don't make them here anymore

Love SK wrenches, screwdrivers and sockets, but I never liked their ratchets...they always seemed cheap to me. I definitely don't need another ratchet, but I may need to add one more SK tool to my collection.

S&K stands for, Slip & Kill. That handle feels comfortable because it is a copy of the Snap On ratchets.
I gave up on their tools a long time ago as almost every S&K tool that I ever purchased, broke. or wore out prematurely.
I have vintage set of their hex and torx bits. not impressed at all

I love SK tools and prefer their sockets over Snap On but I was also someone who wanted this ratchet

I love SK tools. Bought a 1/4 and a 3/8 set in the 70s and still use them today. Used them professionally for 5 years and even with heavy air ratchet use never a broken socket. The 1/4 ratchet is still perfect. F all the Snap-on groupies... you overpaid.

acording to SK the lp90 has had an "UpDate" to address the problematic selector switch... if i understood their email correctly, the green switch is the old style (relative term on a new ratchet) & the re-designed selector switch is now plain ol silver... so now, being a long time sk user, ive gotta have one... thanx
good review. nice work. I may consider sk for my next ratchet. im saving up for their x frame wrenches. its very convenient for me to use the snap on tool truck that comes by every week. I've asked sk several times for info on a dealer and I have heard there is one near me but they are no help in getting the info.
I have a long handle 3/8 with a locking flex head. it is the cheap option, the button for the lock is coming loose. I have abused it for about six months now and it just developed the issue, it still functions and it was a fifty dollar ratchet so well see how long it lasts.

Probably going to wait for a 1/2 inch to come out. You should do a review on the x-frame ratchet wrenches. They look fucking awesome. Want to buy like a 13mm or 16mm something I use a lot and try them out but could only find sets.
