If I'm not under orders and was not designated for stop loss, you don't get to tell me I abandoned anyone. I served a full tour, supported my fellow Marines to the highest possible standard, recognized by 3 certcoms, 4 cert for achievement, 8 letters of appreciation, and a Navy achievement medal, along with 4 promotions (2 meritorious) and winning Marine of the quarter.
As long as I or anyone does the service to an exemplary degree, don't worry about when we choose to do other things in our life. We didn't break contracts and if you feel abandoned that I didn't stay for a 20 year war, the problem is you. I'm proud of every single thing I've done and how well I did it, including training my replacement so the mission carried on without me.

My God, a man volunteered at 17 to serve. He didn't retire after 20 yrs service, but opted to continue. At 24 yrs he sought to continue public service as an elected official, and turned in his papers. He didn't yet know if he was going to be nominated. When he knew this, he informed his commanding officer, rather than a senior NCO. He was honorably discharged in order to campaign for office. He's being criticised by a party who has a leader who dodged the draft several times, and who's deputy served four years as a desk jockey. This is madness.

He instead retires at 24 from Italy, not 25. Lies about his rank because he didn't complete his two year training stint. He was a Master sergeant not a sergeant major. Says he carried a weapon in war, in Italy? Then refers to the national guard as 19 yo cooks when asked to send them in as Minnesota burned. He is what Thomas Paine wrote of as a Sunshine Patriot. Walz retired, that’s a lot more paperwork and verification time. My uncle retired from the Air Force after +20 years, he notified them a year in advance and then the paperwork process took longer than 6 months due to his security clearances.
This guy is mad at Walz for another reason. I think I heard he was promoted to command sargent major which may have caused him to report to someone else not of the same rank, even though this guy had more “time in grade”. His wording and actions suggest he has something personal against Walz and it may be as simple as he got denied retirement and Walz got it? We’ll probably never know for certain.

He only lost that rank upon retiring due to leaving two years before the end of his six-year contract in order to run for Congress. He also deployed to Italy in 2003 to serve with the European Security Force, which was supporting operations in Afghanistan. Thank you Sergeant Walz. I am a 22 year Air Force veteran and I respect and thank anyone who has honorably served any time to their country. J.D. Vance and this Sergeant doing the interview are pure clowns. No one quits the military. They are put out, they complete their enlistment or if they make it a career they retire. Pure and simple. Any person who has served the military in honorable service deserves the respect of this entire nation. As veterans we ALWAYS respect all veterans regardless of branch of service. If there is a stop loss he would not have been allowed to retire. I was forced into two additional years of service because of stop loss due to 9/11. Sergeant Major Walz had submitted his retirement papers before he received orders so he was allowed to retire with an honorable discharge. This Sergeant during the interview is a pawn to a 5 time draft dodger and a traitor to every veteran in America.

I am overseas with the military right now and I am disgusted with this swift-boating of our service members. Walz served 24 years, which is 4 years more than retirement, and it was during wartime that he decided to stay in for 4 more years. At that point, he could have retired whenever he wanted to unless he was designated for stop loss, which he never was. So this is not much adu about nothing; this is pathetic. Vance only served for 4 years as a PR guy, but he served. He also could have stayed in for another 4 years, but he didn’t, so did he leave his troops during a time of war? No. His time of service was up. But compare 4 years becoming a Corporal to 24 years of service becoming a Sergeant Major, and Vance should be ashamed of himself for ever questioning Walz for something like “stolen valor,” especially when his new boss is a draft dodger. What a loser of a human being Vance is, but he did serve. We will not let anyone denigrate Walz’s service. The media should be honoring him, not allowing this nonsense to even be a story.

As a service member who had served over 20 years, he was eligible to retire, and as such dropped his papers, and received concurrence from his Command. The bottom line and focus should be that the Governor received an Honorable Retirement / Discharge for his long service. It appears this did not settle well with the person above who consistently dodged the question that Governor Walsh was eligible to retire. If, based on what the CSM recanted over and over, his issues was personal and he seems to to be harboring some ill feelings which has nothing to do with the Governor’s “documented service”. It is also important to note as said above and confirmed, that Governor Walz was not on the promotion list. At that point a decision had to be made… stay or retire. If Walz hadn’t gotten his orders and had served his 20 years, then this sounds like a personal issue with this Sgt Major - who, if he claims he knows procedures then he should know that someone still in service after 20 years has the right to retire when they desire. Especially if they’re leaving to serve their country in another manner. 😡

This CSM is simply upset that Walz didn't give him the courtesy of informing him of his retirement. There is no "protocol" of this CSM being involved in the retirement. That protocol is between the soldier (Walz) and the Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard. I'm sorry CNN, but you just wasted people's time with this interview. And yes, I am a retired regular Army soldier.

So out of curiosity, their is no code of conduct that states go through your chain of command 1st, and not jump over commanding officers head when making decisions that effect the battalion? Because what I'm hearing is that he was part of the leadership that was getting things ready and backed our leaving everyone else behind once they once they were scheduled to go to Iraq.

@@RichardJr1134Senior non-commissioned officers (NCO)s are not in the chain of command. Sergeant Majors are in advisory roles and have responsibility for executing tactical orders issued by officers and carried out by the NCO corps and the soldiers under their authority. The CSM seems to have a personal grievance with a peer I this case for not having gotten the professional courtesy of being informed. The CSM also struck me as very by the book and possibly inflexible.
CNN did a poor job of highlighting these dynamics during the interview.

After that many years of service, he should have been able to retire with out all this political bs. The man went over your head. Get over it, he's done his time.
