In this week’s episode, we discuss 5 quick summer landscape photography ideas that helped me out on my recent trip to Yosemite. Out of all the seasons in the year, summer is by far the one I embrace the least. It's hot, the sun rises way too early, color contrast is hard to find and the atmosphere always appears hazy and washed out. Most of my landscape photography is done during the fall, winter and spring months and generally slows down during the summer time, but this year I wanted to change that.
In this video, I share 5 quick summer landscape photography ideas in 9 minutes. These photo ideas have motivated me to get outside and make some photos during a time of year when it's much easier to just stay indoors. Summer landscape photography isn't easy, but it can still be a productive time for outdoor photography as long as you just get out and do it. That's the hardest part for me, just getting outdoors and making it happen!

What’s your favorite season to get out for some outdoor photography?
Fall. I have a bad habit of editing all my green summer photos to look like fall colors. Trying to get away from that and embrace the summer green, great tips here to help!

Mabey winter, because I live in Norway and it's always snow in the winter.
I'm glad to hear someone else has trouble with summer photography. You'd think in the summer with the flowers and lakes and warm weather it would be ideal, but I never seem to get much in the way photos (not to mention 5:30 am sunrises are for the birds). Winter is turning into my favorite - more dramatic weather, and snow can make for interesting scenes.
Living in SoCal we have 2 seasons. There's hot Summer and not hot enough to be called Summer (pros and cons to this pattern). I enjoy local photography between November and mid April. If I am traveling I really enjoy the colors and temperature changes of Autumn.
These are also quite appropriate for those of us living in areas that are not as photogenic as Yosemite. Sweeping vistas of corn and soybeans only goes so far. Good ideas, thanks.

Living in The Pacific Northwest, Washington to be specific. Favorite season to shoot depends on what you want to to shoot. Want some crazy amazing colors in nature then spring and fall. Snow capped mountain tops with amazing detail from sunlight, then late winter through spring time. farmland definitely spring time. Crazy seascapes with super dramatic clouds id say fall through spring.

Mark I really liked the silhouette tip. I’ve never made one but plan on giving it a try soon and I also hate the summer and it makes me a lazy photographer not wanting to get out and deal with the heat and terrible conditions

Summer in Michigan has the same problem that Gary mentioned... not a lot of waterfalls, gliffs or more extreme landscapes. However, summer is my Macro photography season and the advantage is that sun is up early and late giving a variety of shooting experiences. So, like you said in part of the video... I look for the details and using angles that are not common or available in the winter or wet months. Great video again Mark... Thank you and hope all is going well. Since I live in the mountains (Alps) directly at a National Park, summer is my favourite season. It's warm (as it can get at 2000-4000m), I can reach the photo spots that normally are too dangerous because of avalanches, the Milky Way is spectacular as you can see the center. With a tent I can spent the nights outdoors (sometimes only with a sleeping bag) and photograph the sunset, Milky Way and the sunrise. And very important, for the reflection photos, all the lakes are not frozen what is normal between October till June. In higher mountains spring is in June/July as the snow gets away, so you have some flowers for your foreground. As a bonus I can also make some wildlife photography of all the ibexes, eagles, vultures, marmots etc. P.S. Of course I like autumn and winter but it's so freezing cold 🥶

Ugh it’s mid 100’s here this week with zero clouds in AZ. This is definitely a brutal time. Hopefully the monsoon storms get here in a few weeks and I can go shoot some lightning! Thanks man for the tips and another great video buddy!

What I like best about shooting in summer, is early mornings at sunrise. In summer, I can catch a sunrise every day if I want to. Autumn, winter or spring, I'm usually preparing for work/family which gives me only the weekends to do so. Going into forests during hot summers at 6 in the morning at sunrise, often results in bathing sunlight coming through thick mist, which gives the best results.

I really like that photo of the waterfalling with the silhouette of the trees.
When I can, I usually love to add reflections into my photos. They seem to really make things more interesting, especially when the reflection is something completely different than the subject in the photo. For example, I shot a landscape photo with no sky. There was a small puddle that I was able to get a nice clean reflection of the clouds in the sky. I did about a half second exposure which caused the clouds to drag a little. It turned out pretty sweet I think.

Great video once again, thank you for the tips. For me, i like to shoot autum but summer time has his advantages too (warm short nights = sunset + astro + sunrise shoot with only 5-6 hours to be spend on place). For me is the most dificult to shoot in winter (if we have snow its to bright).

Exposing for the sky is really quick to do with the AE-L button if you're in aperture mode. Going manual will probably get better results though when it comes to silhouettes as opposed to just severely underexposing the bottom half of the image.
We don't have 4 seasons here on Maui (to speak of)...it's either winter or summer. The winter has better sunsets as the sun sets over the water, where winter sunsets are behind the west Maui mountains. It's ALWAYS green and lush, except for the sea level places like Kihei or Lahaina...it gets brown there during the summer. I kinda envy you guys for fall images...other than that, it's basically the same year round...either hot or cold (yes, it gets cold for us when it dips below 60)

i love winter time.. however, i almost never shoot then. spring and fall for me for wildlife and stuff like that. but, i chase storms and i need summer for that.. hot, crappy humid summer. when its hot like the past week, i almost never head out unless there are storms near by..

Mark some of what you've talked about in this video I can relate to. There are times when it's just no fun going out in what ever weather mother nature wishes to present that day. However you kind of missed a point. You really should have suggested that, no matter what weather conditions are you should at least make an effort to go out and practice shooting. Without practicing you never develop your skills, and learning how to work around the conditions presented that day. Because that day you've decided to get out even though you really don't want to. May get you an image that you would be proud to present, and have a story to tell.
I focus on staying out of this miserable NC heat! #bringbackwinter

I agree about the dappled light in woodland scenes, but I've found that my camera just doesn't have the necessary dynamic range to capture everything. I've had scenes where the best I could do still blows out the highlights AND blocks up the shadows. Yeah, I know, bracketing works, but I'm too lazy.

And summer is usually the most "touristy" season. But if you are going to shoot a sunrise, there's a quite good chance that you'll have the location for yourself due to the early sunrises.

In a climate like ours north of the border, winter is a season where we typically hide out so we don't take as many photos during that season. We relish summer because of the temperatures and the colours, especially in places like cottage country.
Of course, I did make an effort to go out in -35° weather in January to take photos.
One day I’m going to do things like this, just need to get my ‘camera confidence’ up. I’ve recently started with photography, and actually taking it seriously.
