This was SUCH a thorough and enjoyable interview. Always a pleasure to get the practical yet caring advice from Dr. Kennedy, someone I’ve known for a long time.
If you or someone you know has been diagnosed or deals with anxiety, this is THE episode for you. We cover all the ways anxiety, the body, and the mind are connected, where to begin helping yourself (or others) with those anxious feelings, what the therapy and personal development industries often miss out, and way way more.
    (00:00:00) - Intro and Russell’s defining moment
(00:04:47) - How Russell dealt with the complexities of a schizophrenic father
(00:12:36) - How anxiety is a manifestation of something much deeper
(00:16:44) - What are some of the most common anxiety myths?
(00:20:05) - What is the actual purpose of anxiety?
(00:22:39) - How do you talk to people who dismiss anxiety and trauma?
(00:35:33) - Do you think kids are more anxious than ever before?
(00:42:31) - What do we do for kids knowing that distraction culture will likely worsen?
(00:50:13) - What do you mean by “anxiety isn’t a feeling”?
(01:01:31) - Where do you begin helping someone (or yourself!) with anxiety?
(01:11:38) - Is there a difference between anxiety and stress within the brain, and Russell’s final thoughts on anxiety
Dr. Russell Kennedy, aka “The Anxiety MD” specializes in the art and neuroscience of helping people recover from anxiety disorders. He knows anxiety from the inside out, as he developed his own anxiety disorder as a result of growing up with a dad with severe schizophrenia. Dr. Kennedy has degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience, and developmental psychology-but it’s not all science, as he is also a certified yoga and meditation teacher and was a professional stand-up comedian for over a decade (no joke!)
In his award-winning book and audiobook, ANXIETY RX, he shows a practical, actionable program for anxiety relief that incorporates a combination of the latest in neuroscience with the grounding wisdom of the body with the ultimate goal of relieving the anxious thoughts of the mind. Using neuroscience (think "The Body Keeps the Score") and blending that science with a more artistic approach he learned through living at a temple in India, taking psychedelics, and being a natural and gifted intuitive, Dr. Kennedy gives a unique and never before seen understanding of what anxiety truly is, and further, exactly how it can be successfully treated. Dr Russ wants to make sure that nobody has to suffer with anxiety as he did.

I am a follower of Dr. Russell. This exchange was next level for me, especially the part of feeling inherently distrustful of “the world”. Very illuminating and pragmatic in effecting change.

Wow, I suffer from anxiety for so many years. After listening to this podcast I gained a new insight of my issues. I lived with denial that I did not experience any trauma, and the thing with not to trust other people I can relate so much. Thank you

I call the repetition compulsion “being comfortably uncomfortable”. We know how to navigate the situations that traumatized us…so we relive it over and over because we have learned HOW to.

You are enormously helpful ! It was difficult to hear you at first because of the level of my past traumas. You are coming through easier. Very difficult at first. I commend you, Dr Russell.

If anxiety is an issue of physiology of the body from 'old unresolved wounds', then how come a seven year old can have anxiety. Does a child have a younger self or an inner-child?

Great message. I learned some cognitive and mindfulness techniques from that book "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels but I'll incorporate these principles also.

If there is no real reason for normal anxiety then it’s 100% diet, we are first biology and then we develop opinions of what we are, that unconscious stuff which causes all problem in our thinking brain is our brain trying to express that he is suffering but as it not know words our thinking brain have to guess it. Exclude all sugar from your diet, increase meat and fat consumption, stay in nutritive keto state and watch how your thinking brain is changing (which in fact it’s not changing it just stop getting all those pressure from lizard brain and there is no need to imaging and guessing story to resolve problem which is purely biological, it’s all about survival in first place). 11 years of chronic anxiety solved in 1 month here. Wish you all best to all of you I have very high empathy with all ppl with psychological disorders 🙏🍀
