To Baltimore, Louisiana and so on, its a handy thing in the craft, .just a note i worked for BF Dimond out of Mobile Alabama on the patuxant river bridge in 1971 I was connecting red iron off of a barge, coolhuh.

The best way to weld socket welds, is to use a cardboard insert ring. than you know for sure that you have an acceptable expansion gap according to asme IX
A good welder deserves a good fitter, a bad welder needs a great fitter!

Fitters and welders need to work together and not against each other , nothing worse than a fitter leaving big gaps fora welder to try to weld

Weld 90 degrees around one side, skip to the opposite side and weld 90 degrees, then complete the unwelded 90 degree segments.

At Dow Chemical we went away from the cardboard inserts 40 years ago or so and adopted the use of Gap-O-Let spacers in all socket welding specs.
