Dungeons and Dragons Lore: Leonin

- Coming to Dungeons & Dragons via the Magic the Gathering card game, Leonin are a popular new playable character species. While officially available only in the Magic the Gathering sourcebook for the Plane of Theros, there are many reasons why Leonin should have a presence in nearly any D&D world setting.

In my dnd homebrew I have the Leonins have a feud with Gnolls. Just like Lions and hyenas in real life, leonins and Gnolls absolutely hate each other and will attack each other on sight
Im glad im not the only one who did that. It makes sense naturally as honorbound and noble the leonin are wouldnt tolerate the backstabbing betrayals of the gnolls.
"Leonin can roar 25 times louder than a gas-powered lawnmower"
Anything but metric...
America *had* to be different and it's made travel annoying for us for life, hahaha
" how many footbal fields is that? "
2250 db = The leonin yell range.
@@xPumaFangx at most, it would be 114 decibels (which is still very, very loud)
@@AJPickett How is 90 db x 25 not = 2250 db?
I gotta love how ever expanding the D&D lore and games of the like worlds are. Your videos was the reason I got into D&D
Totally agree! AJ is the best, and in my opinion he is the true heart of D&D! Chris Perkin knocks ‘em down and the Pickett brings it right back up!
Me too
You gonna make AJ cry happy tears!
I'm always leonin something new when I watch one of your videos...I'll show myself out.

They're in my homebrew setting, but the only clan of any relevance on the continent the game takes place on are the "Shadowmane". A group of them that had a generations-long war with the orcs and were forced to lose their ancestral homeland. They were on the verge of extinction, and swallowed their pride - asking for help from a neighboring human kingdom, who agreed, with three rules;
- Leonin must serve in the kingdom's military or city watch for at least six years of their lives. They are allowed to retain their ancestral fighting styles or magic if they wish.
- The Shademane clan's greatest shaman is to act as one of the king's viziers for their entire life, as will their greatest shaman after them, and their greatest shaman after them, in Infinium.
- When the Shademane's lands are retaken, the human kingdom is to remain a valued ally and welcome guest. The first two stipulations are to be abolished at that time in good faith.
The leonin agreed, and they're in their second generation as part of the human kingdom, who are starting to realized they got a really good deal, as the lionmen of the newest generation have begun to think of the human kingdom as their 'clan', becoming extremely loyal/fanatic about it.
Secretly introducing Leonin into my homebrew campaign. I have my own lore for them, but the one my party is likely to meet in particular is (appearance-wise) based on Gado from Bloody Roar and is a Squared Circle Pugilist who sees monsters and is just like "You see that Beholder over there? I'm gonna wrassle it!"
Nice, pugilist is a great fit for them.
Tysm, a campaign I recently joined, that has it's first session in 30 mins after this comment, is gonna have me playing this race! This vid is a lifesaver! I like to know my race lore before using them.
excellent.
Glad you are good man. Dope video, love me some lion folk.
I have gotten a ton of great use out of the mtg d&d books and my players love the new race options. So for me it has blended perfectly. I mostly make my own settings anyway and just use forgotten relms lore as a starting point for monsters and gods.
I love your synopsis of lawful good planes xD. My first love of that side of the great wheel was seeing the third layer of Arcadia under the control of the Hard-headed, sliding into Mechanus.
Amazing video and gotta say you sounded really upbeat going into this hybrid lore xD
It's a fantastic multiverse, I'm loving it.
So happy you are, loving hearing you talk about it so far xD
Always a good time to relax and grab a beverage when there's new video out!
Ooh one am where I am. Good stuff to listen to as I drift off. Thanks AJ!
I've listened to this in the background at least a dozen times now as I've been writing out an old guard Leonin whose previous party disbanded after a very upsetting death, pushing everyone else into a normal, stable life that my 54 year old cat man simply couldn't get with. Probably my second favorite character I've ever made, love these videos almost as much as this old Battle Master loves picking birds out of the sky with his well used and decorated sling.
In my setting, Tabaxi and Leonin came from a branching evolutionary line and as a result, have very different social structures. The Tabaxi clans reside in the open fields while the Leonin clans hide away in the mountain jungles to the South East.
If you have Tabaxi in the world, you'll probably have Leonin.
Thanks.
You have no idea for how long I waited for this video.
I was under the impression that most Leonin in Theros refused to pay any homage to the gods at all.
Mostly, yes.
The Leonin family dynamic makes it sound like they'd fit right into Halfling communities, funnily enough
I imagine the Halflings wouldn't be too keen on that, at first.
Excellent
While Leonin are relatively new, they play well into my homebrew species, the Gnollvarg. Gnollvarg are a variant of the classic Gnoll, hailing from the bitter cold tundras of the north, and forsaking their chaotic evil roots, for Chaotic Good/Neutral Good alignments.
The Leogard, a race of lion men, were Lawful Good (read: Lawful Stupid) who devoted themselves to wiping out ALL Gnoll Kind. Even the Gnollvarg who were good hearted, loyal, and relatively peaceful, outside of taking up crusades to fight against unjust dictatorships.
The Leonin are a perfect fit to take this role, and i will be working to bring them into future campaigns.
As a side note:
Gnollvarg have a more wolf/bear like appearance, usually in shades of white, or light gray, and their racial culture is based heavily on a mix of Tolkien Dwarves, and the general mindset of the Knights Templar. they would go on crusades if they heard of genocide, authoritarianism, or other abuses of power. While Good, they would not hesitate to kill a child, if it meant saving a dozen more.
the Leogard as i created them, were lawfully stupid. justice did not matter, in the face of the law.
I was initially somewhat leery about mixing MtG lore into D&D, but I have to admit that I'm warming up to the idea thanks, in no small part, to your videos. Thank you for encouraging me to broaden my horizons.
Just doing my job ;)
In the 90s, I homebrewed some player character races/archetypes based upon the Zodiac signs... most didn't take much. This reminds me of the "Leo" race I created and is much better. Will you please lend me some E-115 or some other E element and help me repair my time machine so I can go back to the 90s and implement these into my games? Oh... and repairs to my time machine will be quite extensive... it never worked. Thanks!
Best I can do is E-117 I picked up at a garage sale in Australia.
@@AJPickett We might over-shoot the date a bit but that should work. That's almost gravity drive starship quality.
Now I've got some great inspiration for a Lion-esque character/NPC!
Great video aj!!
amazing content as always
Love your content. Keep up the good work!
If you havent done it yet, could you speak on the Loxodon?
Especilly the lore on wolly Loxodon.
He did, along side the Loxo.
I run Leonin as another race of Tabaxi in my homebrew campaign. Different history, different mannerisms and customs but shared ancestry
100% legit use for them, go hard.
Really like these guys. Glad your back!
Good to hear your voice is better AJ 😊
So a Leonin and a Tabaxi enter an open air drinking pub...
*Fur flies in this outrageous summer comedy romp! Staring Ryan Reynolds as Xante De Plume and Vin Diesel as Scar Redmane.*
Awesome Video AJ
People have been trying to cross MtG with D&D since the 1990's AD&D game rules were still in play.
Such as using the Deck of Many Things.
Just wanted to say thank you again for all the wonderful content, and hard work :) !
Not sure if you'll see this AJ (and you dont have to respond), but I have a personal question. I'm wondering if you have children? I'm a father of 4 girls :) btw. I only ask because of the many traits you possess. You have a calm, pleasant, and fair voice. Your defined, stern, but gentle rules for only allowing a supportive and safe community, and always reminding people to follow their own hearts and ideas, and lastly that you always remain humble. If you're not a father I only suggest you should try. It's so wonderful, and I strongly belive you'd be good at it :) . Sorry for the long message. I've been watching a long time, and saw no reason why I shouldn't share my thoughts. Thank you again. I wish I could afford to be a patron...4 kids and all lol. Cheers from Canada
Love your work AJ.
Ah geez. Thanks AJ. I'm now mentally building a encounter/campaign using Leionin based off the 2 lions from "the Ghost and the Darkness"
It was the first thing that popped in my head. Lol
Awesome video my friend.
Yikes! Demon lions are also a thing, I should make a vid about them.
Great video as always 😁
I wonder after Invincible, how many people would try and use Leonin to make a Battle Beast build
Every one.
Yeah... everyone :)
/\ I'm Literally watching this video to help homebrew battle beast..although I'm planning to use him as a boss NPC rather then a player character.
So I can expect some crazed lion psuedo-paladin creature to interfere in my mass deicide plan at the early levels while I create the beginnings of my army, but just at some point.
I will make rugs and pelts out of these lions for that. Perhaps I might help myself by creating an artificial lifeform using them as a base.
Ow goody one of my favorite races in d&d
So awesome! I’ve had Ajani as a planeswalker and his army of leonin in one of my games. So excited to have a full video done on these good lion folk.
These guys were the main creatures in one of my favorite decks back in high school before it got way to expensive to play.
Great video man good luck with lockdown
Nice! Bonus Leonin lore from other realms! Great video!
Ty so much for this
Thank you for this. I'm playing a Leonin barbarian from the Spine of the North in a Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign so this will be very helpful
Love this, hope you’ll expand to more MTG planes in the future, I’m running a D&D campaign set in the MTG multiverse, and my players have almost all chosen planes I’m unfamiliar with lmao
This is the way.
@@AJPickett This is the way.
This is why you always make a game world with Continents and shores. Because you can always " a island to the far (insert compass direction here) has been found!" " Mists!" . "floating!"
I'm incredibly excited that they got the Theros stuff out. I kinda like MtG novels, though I never really played the card game after junior high
Yay!
Reminds me of the Vah Shir in Everquest. My main in that game was a Vah Shir shaman that had the head and fur (and tail) of a tiger. Wonder if this Magic the Gathering lore came before 2001 when the Vah Shir were introduced in EQ? 😜
I remember being in middle school in the 90s and playing MTG. I had cat warriors, elite cat warriors, and panther warriors. All were based off anthropomorphic large cats with a middle eastern flare.
Kitties!!
My first character I am about to play is a Leonin barbarian. She was found as a baby as the sole survivor of a crashed spelljammer on Toril and raised by a tribe of tabaxi. As far as anyone knows (including her) she's just an extra big tabaxi that isn't very bright and prefers to just smash and slash instead of focusing on rouge or monkish skills like the others.
Like many barbarians, intelligence is her dump stat so I plan to make her the the classic dumb ditsy girl but with enough strength to pound the average person into mush. She's going to be very curious and playful like a cat would be, and although good in alignment and actions she loves nothing more than charging into combat with a greataxe. Instead of a rage, I think she's going to have more of a mania; getting googly eyes and laughing as she thoroughly enjoys herself like a cat stuck in a cage full of parakeets.
Hello, I wanna make a Leonin with the Far Traveler backstory - anyone know of any canon musical instruments unqiue to this race of Theros?
Ooo, this one nearly rolled off the table! Another stick of glue for the eating.

Fascinating video and excellent work as always aj! Also do you think you'll do a video on the tritons of theros?
Yes, most likely.
Oh, you just gave me some Ideas. If my current character buys the farm any time soon, I may petition my DM to let me play one of these guys!
My normal DnD group had started a campaign recently and I settled on Leonin as a character. I figured it would be fun but honestly I'm having an absolute blast, far more than I thought I would, playing as one. I think that this video will be be helpful in thinking up ways my character would behave as well as things that could maybe make his vague backstory more interesting.
I remember quite awhile back (Decades) in a Dragon Magazine stats for a Lion race of humanoids. Are these the same thing or do you happen to know which # it was in?

Woo AJ is back
Thanks for all you do!
I plan to tweet you a little something you might like on making artifacts more vivid. It's a specialty of mine.
I love the fact that they included the Leonin since the tabaxi rules did not fit with them.
Magic does have a tabaxi equivalence though, in the form of the cat warriors, who are panthers and leopards opposed to the leonin lions.
I can't remember if there exists a plane with both types of cat people though, but either way they really are made for different environment.
Duuuuude, do slivers if you get a chance.
That'd be a rad video
I have done so already :)
@@AJPickett lol badass I'll go watch that right now 😅
Yah...you have survived (sound a little rough still) but happy your back!
Ajani Pridesmane aka the lion jesus and his journey thru Theros is a great read.
Btw Lolth is literally a planeswalker card right now yes it doesn't make sense besides the obvious marketing stunt.
Miletus was a classical Greek city.
Sorry, my bad.
@@AJPickett No worries. Only a half dozen or so people would catch that.
Mirrodin Leonin paladins of conquest can be a thing although fallen aasimar might still be better. Roar + attack or transformation+spiritual weapon, that's the question
If its to lawful it might as well be evil depending on the situation.
The art depicts them carrying the same kind of weapon over and over, it's not quite an axe though. It seems to me to look of Egyptian origin or close to it, does anyone know the name of it?
Adjani, who is depicted a lot in this video, carries a weapon made with the head of his axe, with the head of his brother's axe on the other end, so, they are simply axe blades rotated slightly to be better for a double-ended weapon.
I've always seen them called Egyptian Fan axes
@@AJPickett Thank you!
@@257shinigami Thank you!
The thing that draws me to them is there relationship to the gods. They don't deny the gods as gods, far from it. However, recognizing a being as all powerful and recognizing them as a being of worship are two completely different things.
In previous editions we had a class called the Ur-Priest who basically steal power from the gods (they see them as you described, powerful beings who are not worthy of worship), in 5E we have the Leonin Iconoclast, who are more like cleric bane, they hunt down and kill the servants of the gods.
@@AJPickett and their mana colours were blue-red. oh wait no I'm mixing up my d&d with my MTG, that's UR dragons that are blue red.
Hell yes
The prides sound a lot like the Nietzschean from the Andromeda TV show.

Hey AJ, hope you’re feeling better!
95%, good enough to get back to work :)
Kudos to you for an entertaining D&D/MTG character race lore!! I am curious as to what level and class that Planeswalkers become when converted into D&D stats. I'm sure they have an innate power of planar travel or gate to travel among the D&D multi-verse with ease. Like Emperor Palpatine says in SW: The Revenge of the Sith: "POWER! ABSOLUTE POWER!!"
There is a ranger subclass you can take at level 3 titled Horizon Walker, it’s been a while since I’ve looked through GGR but I’m pretty sure planes walkers are detailed in there
Depends on which era of MtG history we are talking about of course, the original Planeswalkers are stupendously powerful, the latest batch, not much better than Sorcerers with wizard class levels :)
Super
I love d&d, I love mtg, I love this video and the one about the slivers from years ago.
In my world, all catfolk are tabaxi, but the "subrace" of lions are leonin, and this really does help
Kinda did the same ^^ different social classes, though.
awesome
I find the lack of Thundercats staggering
How would you stat a leonin for maximum Thundercatness?
I would gift them a magic shortsword. By using a bonus action, you can say a command to change it into a longsword, then into a great sword. Thunder.....Thunder......Thundercats HOOOOOOOOOOOO

Volo would be proud I know I am.
Thanks James!
Your labor pleases me.
I like the thought of Leonins and Tabaxi are the same species like the Khajit in elderscrolls ... Maybe depending if it's close to the next or last moon ... I wanna say if it's closer to waxing or waning
Also have them be apart of a savannah island with a mountain range in the middle separating a small rainforest for the Tabaxi to mainly inhabit, have a couple of beach islands with small plains in the middle around it full of fisher villages and hunting grounds ... But have their archipelago close like maybe one being like Mont Saint Micheal to a large stretch of beach leading to forests or plains and meadows with one city and small villages but it being lightly populated but well connected with roads with it mainly being hunting grounds
Tabaxi are more khajit-like Leonin are more like honor bound Big ass Cat people who are VERY intimidating
Hey aj can you do video one hundred hander , ps cr 57 dnd
One of my favorite characters was a lion man named Aslan. He died from a crit session 1, I was fine switching to another character but my Dm offered me multiclass into Phoenix sorcerer, good combo for a warpriest. I often described his mane as illuminating when he cast spells.
Wait a second I think I've heard this one before....was there perhaps a satyr named tumnus?
Can't wait for you to do one for Yuan ti purebloods
He did yuan ti a long time ago

Ah, you raise a good topic... I have a video on the Yuan'ti for the D&D Multiverse, you can see how making another Yuan'ti video for the MtG multiverse versions would be quite confusing. This is a problem I will have to figure out a solution to.
Created a monk Leonin named Rock with fangs and claws covered in steel. Despises gnolls..
I feel like we would be friends... I also hate Gnolls.
@@AJPickett we already are mate...we already are.. thanks for this sick content!!!!! Much needed!
Tangath Toborn.
Is there a playable tiger-like race that mirrors the Leo in race?
Welllll... you would have the Greater Rakasta from Mystara who are stereotypically tiger like but they can look like any big cat.
Fantasy Flight Games released "Mythic Races" back in 2001, for the 3rd edition/d20 systems. It included the Artathi race-each type of big cat was represented, including Lion-like il' breed and the tiger-like tal' breed. They included society notes, different stats for each sub race, and religious beliefs. That book could be adapted for use in other editions, I'm sure.
Like I mentioned, statistic wise they are identical, just give them an origin from Bant or Alara in general, planes hopping species would be commonplace in the MtG multiverse.
Gods I love this channel 🙏🙏🙏
I had a PC a while back that used to specifically wanted to make a humanoid Lion so i instinctively used the tabaxi template because i didnt have anything else to go off of...but im glad to see more and more races i hadnt initially known about. might be making some tweaks to his character. Fairly well, same way Americans get along with Canadians or Australians get along with New Zealanders. The one sticking point is that Wemics love to drink, while Leonin typically do not (as a culture).
