Wendell, K5WAN, is an S9+ (aka VIP+) Patreon team member. He gifted me his spare Yaesu FTM-400XDR VHF/UHF transceiver. I’ve never owned a dual-band base station, so this is a nice addition to the shack.
In this video, I unbox the radio, set it up, and make my first contact with it.
I plan to shoot more videos showing how to program the FTM-400XDR.
At the end of this video, you will be able to see a listing of some of the supporters of this channel who made this video possible. These are people who have supported the channel via Patreon membership, as what I call long-haulers. Long-haulers have supported the channel on a long-term basis. There are 4 levels of Patreon membership, including S5 (Associate), S7 (Executive), S9 (VIP), and S9+ (VIP+). S9+ (VIP+) denotes an S9 (VIP) member who voluntarily chooses to give over and above the amount for S9 (VIP) membership. They help me continue to produce videos even though most people do not contribute toward the cost of my mission. Without their support, I cannot bring my viewers uncensored content.
I hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful. If you find my channel informative and entertaining, I hope you will consider joining my support group by clicking on: www.patreon.com/N4HNH There are 3 levels of support, including exclusive content. Visibility of premium content is determined by the level of membership you choose. The higher the membership level, the more content you have access to. VIP members are invited to participate in periodic Zoom meetings.
Most videos are visible to the Patreon team members long before they are released for public viewing. Some videos are never released for public viewing. Yearly S7 (Executive) and S9 (VIP) members have access to the menu optimizations PDFs I’ve written for the FT-891, FT-991A, FTdx5000MP, FTdx101D/MP, FTdx10, and FT-710 AESS. Yearly S7 (Executive) members can receive one menu optimizations PDF while yearly S9 (VIP) members can receive multiple menu optimizations documents, plus my FT8 configuration guide for either the FTdx10 or the FT-710 AESS. Future radios might be added. The documents are copyrighted. They shall not be divulged to anyone else without written permission from Doug McAlexander, callsign N4HNH.
N4HNH Radio has a Web site where you can purchase T-shirts with some of the sayings you might hear in the videos. Some of the more prominent videos are featured there as well as a page geared toward ham radio training. Go to: www.n4hnhradio.com

If you don't need the money, gifting a ham radio to a deserving ham is the best way to offload equipment. And Doug you are a deserving ham! I think you will like that FTM-400 and having 70cm in your shack.

Curt, you are so right. Wendell had this radio in his truck, before he was confined to the wheelchair. It had just about all 1,000 memories programmed with the repeaters in the area he drove for his job. I’m very thankful. Wendell said it was under his bed, doing nothing. He has a separate one for his base station. Wayne has been very sick, but, as soon as he is well, we are going to raise Wendell’s 2m/70cm antenna, as you know. Thank you for helping with that. You set a great example for the rest of us to emulate.

Great radio, Doug! I have one in the shack, and one in my Nissan Altima......also have a FTM-300.....actually like the FTM-400XD better, due to the size of the display....tested my brand new FT-65R handheld that you sent to me on the FTM-400XD! Thanks again for that give-away! Jeff N5ITU

I’m so glad you like the FT-65R. It’s such a great little HT. The only downside is that there is no mobile charging adapter.
And yes, I’m really enjoying the FTM-400.

I have one of these in the "shack" and another one in my daily driver. Love this radio and so excited to see you do some videos on it. Even after using it for several years, I'm sure I'll learn something. I hope you'll delve into the group monitor and using the compass features. That's one area I find confusing and haven't really played with. I recently acquired an HRI-200 for wiresx but haven't hooked it up yet. Still using a local repeater for digital but often it's under repair, or has issues, so I finally decided to connect on my own.

Doug, that would make a nice addition to your camper when you go to your POTA locations! Greg N4PSA

Great idea, Greg. But I don’t have a camper. My brother has one and my son has one. We usually take my brother’s on SOTA outings. He has both an HF and a VHF setup. This July, we are taking my son’s and my brother’s on a SOTA outing. In fact, last evening my son, who has the Tesla truck, pulled his brother’s Airstream with it. It pulled it with ease. They sent video to me.

You’re getting into the Dahlonega repeater from your handheld from the house?! Wow! Good repeater and location I guess. And then a low power station from Lawrenceville got in? I live in the wrong location haha.

Pete’s repeaters are incredible. He is known for his perfectionism when it comes to repeaters. His repeaters cover North Georgia better than any others. His 2m repeater is also the boss. He also has a 23cm repeater.

I have the FTM-300 as a base station and enjoy it a lot for both voice and digital (Winlink, FLDIGI, and most recently VARAC). I’m looking forward to more of your videos on the 400 to see how it compares and what I might carry over to the 300. 73!

I really miss that radio. It served me well for 5+ years as an eighteen wheel mobile. Right up until a windshield leak caused it to let out the magic smoke...

My favorite U/V radio of all time. NO good reason to have d/c’d it, imo. I have 2. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.. 73
