It was a chromium mine Tristan. I've been hiking Cyprus now for 20 years, this is one of my favourites. Many times - even during summer - I see no one on the trail, just me and nature!

Been there back in 1992 and it was the best scenery in Greek Cyprus . The relatives told me that there was no walking track and they took us to a cafe and we sat there for hours . They were wrong ! People say that Australia has no mountains true . We do and they are around the same height as the Cyprus mountains . It is funny how they class Trodos mountains as mountains but not in Australia . They just don’t want to admit we do and because people like to pick on Australia. At least Cyprus isn’t treated like that . Great video and it bought me back memories .

@@adamskarga5859 How was it? Is there a trail all the way?

@@lynnecromack4933 It was wonderful! Very quiet and few people on the trails. I changed my plans due to accommodation problems and left Nicosia for Paphos. The road is a mixture of paths and local roads. The weather was great. It rained only on one (last) day when I reached Paphos. So not bad for winter. The temperatures were between 17-21 degrees Celsius, so perfect for hiking. Although on Olympus it was +5 in the morning, but it was sunny and without snow. Great memories and I'm already planning a route from Pomos to Larnaca completely through the mountains for this December.

What a great bit of film. A quality introduction to the landscape and mood of this place, much more interesting than other videos I've just looked at! Is it really one of the least known mountain ranges in Europe ?! Thanks for showing the trees, they do look special. You wonder if people had settled here in the past. Some of the images show some huge terracing on the hill slopes, which must be man-made. Maybe these are recent and built to stop erosion - ? Coming from England, it always seems strange to see so much bare ground everywhere. I know that's probably typical of wilderness areas in the Mediterranean region, but why is this ? Is it very arid, despite all the mist, or is the soil too rocky to support more plantlife ?

@@Tristandewet I did a bit of research and think I can answer my question about the bare soil. It's to do with the soil chemistry and goat grazing, and a long history of general abuse of the island's forests. Apparently most of the soils are "ultrabasic" (highly alkaline, I presume) which makes it very poor for plantlife and vulnerable to erosion. Also during the 19th century, the national goat population was greater on Cyprus than on any other Mediterranean island.

Just to say it's pronounced Troooodos.. I have lived in Cyprus 16 years, there are a number of ways places are spelt on the island. But only the spelling as Troodos is expectable. Hope you found this useful..
