Dude, your channel is amazing! I retired from the Army 9 months ago after a 26yr career. Iraq x2, Afghanistan x2, and Poland. I love exploring and learning new cultures. I'm currently watching your LA video and understand the dynamic when your brain thinks in multiple languages at the same time. I've been learning Russian for the last few years. There's just something that draws me to their culture. The language is beyond beautiful. Is it possible to DM you? There's much more I'd like to ask you. Спасибо, до свидания.

I guess, you can say yes, villages are decreasing in population, because more and more people are moving to cities. If there is some kind of businesses in villages, then they have a chance of upgrading to selo (not yet a town, but already more than a village) and then keep on existing. In USSR it was pretty common that old people would choose to live the rest of their lives in quiet and cheap village with 1 or 3 shops, but now it isn't.

This is another great video! My grandparents had one of those chests, but much bigger. It was beautifully painted with traditional Hungarian red tulips. Inside of the walls had lots of money glued to it, a reminder of the great depression of the 1930s. These almost insignificant things are the ones that we tend not to forget. Amazing stuff!

Watching videos from you, Lars, and others showing abandoned villages, could a person just move on in one of those houses? How would one find the owner to buy an abandoned home in an abandoned village? It seems such a shame those houses are just rotting way instead of being someone's home. I love the look of the village houses. Great video, brother.

I watched your stream with Igor and in a note to this video as well I want to add about reviving cities outside of Moscow, mainly in Siberia I would say, the thing is USSR pursued much different goals in state development and lots of industries, for which cities and villages were built are long gone or are not that important any more, or rather changed in technology. Thus places populated before for working opportunities lost this value, this is important in perspective of now capitalistic Russia (this is not a rant about capitalism just inevitable part of system change) where government and private investors lacking return to support big development of these places, with people moving out its only worse as it might be done in vain in a few years, also who will keep maintainence and adding onto it. Sure basic utilities should be necessary in any case, most of the time its done through tourism, bringing more Russian to visit would help, that's in most cases on regions or cities to implement such plans.
People moving to cities is a cycle, as I wrote about it under video about prices of houses, similar to development, people seek opportunity thus money, thus better life. It goes around, prices rise and people then go full circle back to living in villages due to their better capital (mostly middle class) and overpriced cities, to seek slower pased villages with better money management.
It is sure long way to go, I can only compare to my country Czech Republic, which is much smaller so things move quicker, but it went kind of similar way lf moving from Soviet block, industry went to crisis, countryside was in desolate state for more than decade, then EU pumped money into certain development (this is for another topic, just take it as it is..) so many public areas got lot better, now for few years people started to buy properties back, investing in small towns and villages, financing projects with their enterprises, local tourism got a lot bigger which helps a big time, things are nicer, more small business rise up and people tend to care about litter and looks of their towns.

Similar chests have been used in Germany in the distant past for the dowry. You would store your linens in these chests that you brought into the marriage. I have seen such chests from the 17th, and 18th centuries, etc., decorated with beautiful paintings. The more ornate the more well-off you were. People took a lot of pride in them and their content of course.

Another trip down memory lane! I recall that this was one of the first of video snippets off the old memory sticks (cloud?) where I really met Lars in his survival mode and I couldn't quite tell at that time how Ksenia was taking in the camping thang. I see now that her joy in soviet memories was awakened by the Christmas Tree ornament, and her sleepy (tired in a good sense of a long day and much walking) "Light my fire..." was just too much. You guys are trips!

Hey man, welcome back to Russia!
It's true that many Russian villages are dying. It's a problem that dates back to the USSR as the country had to industrialized rapidly and needed a massive workforce, meaning that many villagers had to move to cities to work in factories. The villages that remained were largely collectivized to feed the growing urban population.
Another factor is the fact that many of those abandoned villages were no longer economically feasible as they were located on historical trade routes that have become defunct over time.
What's reassuring now though is that many Russians who have managed to secure remote work contacts have opted to buy plots of land in otherwise dying villages and build proper houses as opposed to cramped city apartments. I'd actually consider that should I get a remote work contact at my next job; I'm a village boy myself, and can't imagine raising kids in a city.
BTW are you planning any trips to Moscow any time soon? The wife and myself love your videos, it would be lovely to meet up. Would it be okay if I DM you?

I have heard of abandoned villages all over Russia. I don't understand because most of these villages are in good agricultural areas, where they could have prosperous farms. Is it just because of road conditions? Does the government discourage small farms? I know that after the revolution, they killed or drove off the Kulaks (independent prosperous farmers). Did collectivization make farming distasteful to the people in Soviet times?

    • @penthatol
      @penthatol Před 4 měsíci +1

You may be partially correct about how soviet politics affected rural population. On the other hand modern technologies just requier very fewer people to work on land to produce enough food and after all climate conditions and soil quality on the most part of habitable russian territory make farming maybe possible, but hardly economically reasonable, when a comparable tiny patch in south can easily feed whole country
