The one and only Grace Bumbry. When she set foot on the stage she raised the standard of performance for the whole company surrounding her. She was a true leading lady, a great singing actress and much loved by her fellow performers. She is missed.
I'm glad to read that another experience her singing as I did. When we heard her at the Met in this role we were literally electrified. Now, it's all about this and that subtle touch. I say , yes, finding and presenting the subtle side of an operatic character and reflecting that in one's vocalization can be rewarding to the listener is important. But, please don't hold back the power when it's appropriate. Now, I wonder if singers have the ,"power,".

Fantastic voice and looks. She was known in europe as 'the black venus' as i recall her partner/ manager telling me - who was also a very good tenor and my voice teacher here in Australia regards to Andreas J
That "black venus" thing wasn't just because she was stunningly beautiful and black - she was the first black woman to sing in Bayreuth, singing Venus from Tannhäuser. When she went in, there were protests to "throw the black one out". Whe she came out, she had made history, and from what I heard, no one was protesting any more.

Yes, she had a stroke late last year and never really recovered.
She is the Eboli, closing the mantle with the helping of the wind at the end of the Aria. Absolutely beautiful
