    For people who are asking why bother if COSC already certifies chronometers. Reasons are really threefold:
    1.Bragging rights. Tradition of the watchmaking industry.
    2.COSC only tests movements. Not watches in their cases. METAS tests a finished device.
    3.Why not? I think it's beautiful that people do things just because. Because why not. Why not push the boundaries just that little bit more.

    So much inaccurate information in these comments...
    Step 1. Master Chronometer movements are first submitted to COSC for Chronometer Certification which tests in 5 positions and the final results must be accurate to -4/+6 seconds a day. Mathematically, that's already 99.9% accurate.
    Step 2. After the movement passes COSC, the entire watch is assembled and sent to a second independent body, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). The watch is tested now in 6 positions with the final results being accurate to -0/+5 seconds a day and must also withstand shocks up to 5,000 G and magnetism beyond 15,000 Gauss.
    It is not Omega testing their watches in-house like Jaeger-LeCoultre 1000 Hours Control or Rolex Superlative Chronometers.
    Step 3. Correct people on CZcams...

    • @kilianblum8161
      @kilianblum8161 Před 4 lety +1

      Good summary! To the best of my knowledge step 2 is actually performed in-house at Omega under Metas supervision. So the watches are not technically sent anywhere but tested on Omega provided machinery under the supervision of Metas employees assigned to work at Omega. The reason for this is partly that Metas had no facilities or processes in place to test watches, but it also dramatically increases up-front cost for any other watchmaker planning to obtain this certification (not that there are any)... Still as you mention, it’s not comparable to pure in-house “certifications”

    Way too many HATERS here!!!! It's a watch and a very expensive watch. Don't buy if you don't like it. Plain and simple. Don't waste time arguing with people about certifications. No one cares, unless you have a mission to the world of proving people wrong about material thing.

    As a person who repairs watches, i have people tell me they don't wear/want/need a watch. And watches are a waste. Watches are for "x" type of people. The craft is dying. etc. etc. I don't see how Omega could take on such a task with all the testing and building if this was a trade that was dead, or that no one is interested in. Nice to see that there is still a market for a high quality timepiece! It's a bit like performance cars. With the regulations and everything, this is still the best time to buy a performance car!! Same goes for watches. A lot of awesome stuff out there. By the way Omega, can I set up shop at your place? lol

      +regalgsme Agreed. The current Gen. just says whatever their friends say. I already get people in the 40+ age range that want to keep a watch in the family, even if it's a low grade watch. 10 Years ago, people were scrapping everything. It was painful to separate cases and movements. Now, since the gold buying has slowed, people actually value the watch as a whole.

    I like the innovation that Omega puts in. But they should've kept the 2500D movement and advertised their SMPc more, then improve upon the SMPc base. Just because it was never worn by Bond doesn't mean it wasn't one of their finest creations ever. Now their watches are paying the price with the insane thickness from the "Master Coaxial" movement that is a giant chunk of 15mm thick metal that people aren't buying or putting back on the used market rather rapidly.

    Does a master chronometer = chronometer ? I know Rolex likes to call their watches superlative chronometer.. Rolex just makes chronometer certified watches, and likes to add a fancy word in front of it ‘chronometer’, because there is no regulating body to stop them. I read online that superlative chronometer is a term roles uses because their watches are within the range of -2 to +2 accuracy per day... but Rolex does not have that accuracy/precision.

    • @Quicksilver_Cookie
      @Quicksilver_Cookie Před rokem

      I think Omega adds this because they have received chronometer certification from pretty much any regulative body they would care about. Is it a cheeky bit of marketing? Yes. But they deserve it IMO. Omega is one of the last large luxury watchmaker's that still put their effort into making their movements accurate in their marketing. Everybody else just apparently forgot that watch needs to tell accurate time. Even considering that the concept of a mechanical watch is outdated for that purpose anyway, it still needs to do it IMO. I think master chronometer sounds great, so I don't mind it.

    • @HyperionTechOfficial
      @HyperionTechOfficial Před 7 měsíci

      Master stands for anti magnetic, which is why older movements are omega Master coaxial after they put in silicon spring and other components. After they got with metas they developed a new naming system master for anti magnetic which is alot of the time for the testing as well as cased up watches. Water resistance, deviation and power reserve. So its a cased up movement cosc with resistance to MRIs.

      Mechanical pieces are not very practical in modern world, however it's not practicality that drives people into purchasing something like this. It's appreciation of beauty of a still very traditional mechanical engineering. It's like having a tiny metal beating heart on your wrist. You wear it every day of your life. It witnesses all your ups, downs, absorbs your blood and sweat. It becomes part of you. Remembers your stories. Then the next generation gets to appreciate it, and have a tiny part of you as a memory.
      There are many ways to express a poetic thought - through painting, music, written word. Mechanical watches are poetry expressed through engineering.

    As far as I know COSC tests include 3 different temperatures and 5 positions over two weeks. Not just 10 days and two temperatures done by Omega in this video.
    This AD is a classical paraphrasing - it might be "a new standard" and "world first master chronometer" but these standards are WEAKER than COSC.

      +tdebug I thing all their co-axial movements are COSC Certificated. but I will check that out. I think it wouldn't be a smart move from them and an error in publicity just advising this tests without cocs. they say that went behind that, what clearly it's not the case if they don't pass the cosc testa also. regars, I'll be back ;)

    • @tdebug1
      @tdebug1 Před 8 lety

      No you have wrong info, definitely not all Omega (co-axial or not) are COSC certified. In fact, not even Rolex certify 100% movements. Only Breitling send 100% of their movements to COSC, since 2000.
      Actually you can find quite a few articles, saying Omega abandoned COSC and switched to METAS. Their tests are different, including strong magnetic fields etc., which is again Omega specific.

    • @Kenbro100
      @Kenbro100 Před 7 lety +1

    cosc movements are tested for 14 days, 5 positions and 3 different temps. If I'm correct most companies only use top grade movements and adjust to postions in house before sending movement for cosc certification. Cosc is not owned by any company, and not sueded by any watch company. This just looks like omegas own testing, and certifying there own movements. I'm not sold. Cosc movements are more than enough accurate -4/+6 seconds per day/ most test way better. Great marketing I must say. I do not like the ploy of Master Chronometer though.

    • @jianliu9420
      @jianliu9420 Před 6 lety +2

      1. COSC only certifies swiss made watches to promote the swiss industry. Not owned but maybe a little sueded indirectly.
      2. Omega doesn't own METAS. They are third party testing facility.

      So, do you think Omega just falsified their certifications? What's the point you are trying to make? This is just silly. They show images that look pretty for what is essentially an ad for their watches. They don't have to show an actual testing footage by METAS or COSC.

      @@Quicksilver_Cookie Yeah, my comment was made 5 years ago. I guess my viewpoint has changed. METAS seems like a good thing. These Omega META certified movements have been going for awhile now and I haven't heard of many complaints. I still think COSC is good enough, but not against META certification anymore.

      @@jasonwb6884main point of metas is anti magnetism where the MASTER comes from, the additional position they test you never wear its untwist of your wrist but metas tests cased up watches and makes sure its 0- +5 but no hate if you think cosc its good enough thats fine.
