    It's been about 4 weeks since I last did a video so I hope you're not disappointed as we continue to grow masdevallias together in this virtual world of community spirit a few growers wanted another video on repotting and dividing so here it is.
    Best get a coffee for this one ! I did try to keep it short.

    Always enjoy your videos Mick. I can't fault you for forgetting the name of a plant since you literally have a greenhouse full of them. You always seemed worried about the length of your videos but take it from someone who has watched all your videos. You keep the information on track and don't drift off to other subjects and your content is always informative. Watching your videos is enjoyable especially when you can see that you really enjoy your plants. As always, thanks for sharing your space of the world Mick.

      Thank you for your kind words of encouragement it really makes it worth while doing videos on my hobby especially if people get something out of watching. Yes I’ve always believed that viewers nowadays don’t have the time and commitment to sit and watch YT videos over 30 minutes in length because it becomes very time consuming especially if released daily. I believe get in, get it done and get out. Once again thanks.

    Thanks for the video Mick. Informative as always and much appreciated. I have been growing Masdevallias myself for some years but it’s always great to see your plants and growing environment. Like you I am increasingly using less moss in my mix and have also started replacing perlite with small charcoal pieces. I’m not keen on perlite because of all the dust. Seems to be going OK so far, time will tell. Best wishes and thanks.

      Angela great news you’re a massie grower as well, small world, yes I found out that 1 sphagnum stays too wet in winter and 2 sphagnum breaks down before the bark, I will admit it perlite is quite dusty I’ve only used charcoal in my Dracula mix to be honest. I often get a lot of emails from viewers who send me the links to CZcams channels who use some unbelievable potting mixes for Masdevallia orchids “what they have tried”then when the plant takes a dive they ask me how to save it, I always say stay with what you’ve had success with in the past. Happy growing and thanks for watching.

    Great guide. I obviously searched your channel to find good information when I needed to repot my massies. All of them came crouded in small pots with sphagnum only. I grow them in a terrarium sitting in a few mm water. They seems to like it, but a more open and free draining substrate is proboably better.🙂👍😮

      I found sphagnum moss was not really working for me, it was staying far too wet especially with the colder nights approaching so I removed it all ever since they have been far better, I have even repotted my Dracula orchids in bark now days, will have to see in 12 months time.

    Great camerawork and content! Any tips on repotting masd that got a big large and developed a woody center? Tips on chopping vs just repotting?

      Thanks for commenting on the video. I’ve never had or seen a very large Massie with a wooden centre only ever seen wooden dieback which is easy to remove by splitting the plant and making several new divisions. my large specimen plants I just repot in the next size pot up without to much root disruption hope this helps. Happy growing.

    I can't work in the grow room after the sun hits it, even now temps shoot up to 30+ with a 85/90 % humidity. You just pass out after 15 minutes 😁 Talking about hot and humid. Any Massies suited for such an environment ?

      Tell me about it Ynse it’s been a nightmare during the day on occasions I’ve just opened the doors and windows and walked away, I’m not sure even some of my really cooler ones have been struggling with the weather I doubt if any grow in that heat.

      Even the so called hot growers had some difficult days 😁 Really too bad I don't have the environment for Massies and Dracula's (or other cool growers)

      My massies. dracs, sarcochilus and anything else that grows cool/cold go outside during the summer because it's so hot in the greenhouse. I'm lucky in having a suitable north-east-facing wall that only gets a little sun in the mornings until about 10am, and I use shading over the top and bamboo blinds at the sides to shade and filter the wind. The massies and sarcs hang on wire mesh over the windows, so my living room gets a bit dark at times, but for me that's a small price to pay. The dracs are on those square things with pegs/clips you can get to dry socks and stuff in a small space. That also means I can turn them easily to water. Without that growing area outside I wouldn't be able to grow them at all.

      @@debbiethomas3687 we all have our own way of protecting these little beauties and I agree shading is one of the best methods, but lower down in my greenhouse facing my evaporative cooler seems to help my Drac’s and they are surviving but yes outdoors would be a big benefit so glad to hear yours are doing well . Happy growing and thanks for watching and commenting.

      @@MicksMasdevalliaorchids I don't have time to look in as often as I'd like to, Mick, which is a shame. My greenhouse is only 6ft x 8ft and heats up/cools down very quickly despite insulation, fans, water on the floor... Today it topped 46C, despite door and window being open, and it's not even the hottest day forecast of this mini heatwave. So much easier to add a little heat in the winter than to cool it in the summer.

    Mick, I have a glandulosa but the flowers were dying and I think the leaves were yellowing because the flowers were taking up energy? I decided to cut them off even though the flower stem was still green. Was I not supposed to do that? Do all masdies have the ability to bloom from the same spike? Are they like phals?

    • @MicksMasdevalliaorchids
      @MicksMasdevalliaorchids  Před 7 měsíci

      Some can re bloom on the same spike but not glandulosa, yellowing leaves are usually old leaf die backs or can be a few other things like overwatering and staying wet whilst it’s cold, as for the flowers are they near a draft where cold air can blow on them or direct sunlight but we’ve not had much of that lately or even if they get wet whilst you’re watering can cause flowers and buds to blast. If you have the room I’d relocate the plant to another area of your grow space.
