    Good stuff. I have been watching other wood threading videos and this was the first one I saw that automated the advancement of the dowel to cut the threads. Only improvement I could see here would be to add something to keep the far end of the dowel from swaying.

      +John Heisz - Thanks John!! What would be great is to use this jig in conjuction with your thread making method: start a thread using the jig, and continue it with your router table guided setup. That would be awesome! Currently I'm limited to cutting some pretty short threads - not enough capacity in the mechanism to make... I don't know... wooden vise hardware :)

      Toolify if you added some gears you could reverse thread also and easily switch from one direction to the other half way through, which could be useful. Thank you for coming up with this idea, I love parallelograms and pantographs for jig structures. I'm going to make a bunch of beam clamps completely out of wood and do this instead of buying threaded rod, it should work fine.

    Might be more stable if the moving blocks riding on a rail. Really nice work there.
    Also, to anyone who need the formula:
    let t = (number of threads per inches on the steel threaded rod)
    let r1 = (number of holes in the smaller square lengthwise)
    let r2 = (number of holes in the larger square lengthwise)
    tr = t / ( ( r2 / r1 ) + 1 )
    where tr = (number of threads per inches on the wooden rod)

    • @jof1953

    My grandfather always used a green pepper, but said that a red pepper will work best, as long as you're below 11,000 ft of elevation ASL. Personally, I don't think it matters a whole lot which color the pepper is (I confess, my pantograph has a yellow pepper that was on sale at Giant ; P ) but I know there are some purists who insist on the red pepper.
    Very impressive and well thought out. A great blend of classic old-world pepper thread techniques with a blend of modern machining!

    Does that little bit of wobble have any affect on the finished product? I'm wondering if you added a metal guide rail through the wooden blocks on either side of the threaded rod if that would help stabilize it a bit? I guess it's not a big deal if the threads come out okay. Thanks for making this video!

    • @toolify
      @toolify  Před 8 lety +1

      +legacyofbob - The wobble is generally because I couldn't drill a hole perfectly square into the exact center of the dowel. The effect it has on the end product is negligible, but you're right that using metal guides can improve the precision if the application requires it.

    • @AdamEarl2
      @AdamEarl2 Před 8 lety +2

      +FastEasySmartTOOL maybe just put a bushing on the far side of the jig. So when the dowel is cut, it feeds through the bushing and use the major diameter of the thread to keep it straight. Like a gatco bearing for boring crankbores on an engine.
