Joel got all the Jaws plots wrong.
The first shark was killed with an oxygen tank blowing up its head, not by the boat, that was in Jaws 4 which is what this game is an adaptation of hence how you kill the shark at the end.
And the shark didn't follow the family (which was Brody's family, not Hooper's) to Minnesota but to the Bahamas... weirdly, though, he did get right the plotline about the voodoo witch doctor from the novelization who sends the shark after them.
