The Rottemeren were created when, after the draining of the surrounding polders, this water started to function as a high storage basin. Due to the settlement and peat of the area, the Rotte and the Rottemeren are much higher than the polders. On the east side of the Rottemeren is a windmill four corridor that until 1952 provided the drainage of the polders east of the Rottemeren.
A recreational area of 900 hectares has been created around the Rottemeren. It includes the recreation areas Bleiswijkse Zoom near Bleiswijk, Hoge Bergse Bos and Lage Bergse Bos between Rotterdam and Bergschenhoek, the Zevenhuizerplas, the Zevenhuizer Zoom and the Nessebos near Zevenhuizen. In the north, the area connects to the Bentwoud.
Since 1968 the name Rottemeren appears on the topographical maps of the present Kadaster. Until then, the lakes were called, since the 17th century: Bleiswijksche Me(e)ren.
