If that equipment would run, that would be a start up man's dream right there. First sawhead cutter I had was a 611b model, with that same side cut sawhead. Moved up to the 711ex, they were great cutters. Hydro ax went to a 70 series,I had a 470,570 and a 670, over the years. Still today,I have a Prentice 2670 with that sawhead,I really like them.

I told Jason over at Hollis Farms to find him an old Hydro-Ax and put a forestry mulcher head on it, a few years ago. It seems that is what a lot of people have converted their purpose to now and it was what most of the first videos I saw with forestry mulchers was running them with.
Glad to hear you made out alright with the weather, my local weatherman was talking like the end of the world was blowing towards us this morning. Its 5 now, it rained from about 9 to 2 and we just have had some gusting wind since then. First time I have seen the sun since last Friday, so that makes me happy.

I remember the first sawhead i seen. June 1992, MA Ragoni out of Perry, Florida was using it up in Tifton, Georgia while i was in forestry school. They were cutting a natural stand of longleaf pine, that was mostly poles, that they were hauling back to a pole mill in Perry, Florida. 120 miles one way. They were using a Hydro-Ax 611 powered by a 4 cylinder silver Detroit with a Hurricana sawhead. It took forever for that Detroit to get that sawhead up to speed. It would about stall it out every time he would start it up. It sounded good though. Good memories.

Those were good machines my uncles had several and later ran Timberking and Prentice branded cutters. Tigercat became the cutter of choice because of durability and longevity.

I can't tell you how many head gaskets I put on those old Cummins. The good thing is you always had a roof over your head when you worked on them.

I always love checking out old equipment, ever since I was a kid. I was always climbing on them and pretend I was running them and stuff. Then I'd crush my fingers or get cut on some rusty metal and get in trouble. Oh the good times.

That would be a great machine to just get up an running I'm sure there's some half decent usedparts out there, put a big ass turbo on a better cooling system some paint an a new blade some hydro lines chains ,I know don't grow on trees ,just get creative with what you got laying around. An use it to train new operators. I just love the old iron they were stronger then hell an always got the jobs done

In 1985-1986 Cameco had some of the first 4wheel cutters then John Deere bought them out and then developed better ones

That series of Hydo Axes were great machines in their day. Ran a 611E and 711E. They were so much better than the Deere 643 and Franklins of the same period. We used the side cut door to cut big trees without have to drive to the other side of the tree.

All the green on the tires show it has not moved in awhile. In a past video you had mentioned that the land owner used them for a little logging. But you can see he does not do much.

I always wanted to know why the side of the head folded up on the left side you showed around 7:17? Blount, Prentice, Hyrdo-ax were great machines.

Some had a hydraulic cylinder that would open that side so u could cut the side of larger trees so that u didn’t have to drive all way around the tree. That just looked like a cover to clean debris off the disc.

Was the big cover on the backs just to protect the exhaust system ? Noticed earlier Deere s and them had those big covers on the back.

That machine looks very similar to a JD 643K, which I think is a newer machine. I'd be interested to know if JD bought that design from Hydro ax.
