I again about the deep liter method. I’m only a year into chicken keeping and I learned real quick this winter that I didn’t want all that stuff piling up in there. I only use straw under the roost bars. I put down a trap, DE and straw. I use shavings on the rest of the coop. I pull that trap out every couple of weeks and dump it in my garden beds. Works perfect.

Hello from Texas Patara. Happy 2020 😊 Girl I have a PhD in poultry watching you. The first time I saw my birds dust bathing I thought they were having a die-in, laid out sideways and kicking. Then my yard was filled with holes and I would have sworn we had a gopher invasion 😂 On our new place during dry weather we will have a baby pool full of wood Ash, DE and sand. Thanks for all the great common sense advice, you have helped more than you know. Hugs from Houston.

OK. We live in "Wash"ington state, talk about rain. We have had 2 solid weeks of rain. I clean hen house weekly(OCD). I have a plastic kiddy pool under cover, full of sand, diatomasios earth, wood ash. The girls love it. As I grow a ton of herbs. I throw lots of that in the hen house. As I told you my girls are young and I didn't expect them to begin laying until Late February. Guess what. I have eggs coming out my ears. What a surprise. I can't give them away fast enough.

We only do the deep bed method if the weather is in the negative temps for consecutive days. Honestly, I don't like it at all and only do it during the coldest months for as short a duration as possible. We have 80 hens so it gets nasty in there quick! Plus, it takes SO much longer to clean it out when it builds up like that.

Hi, from upstate NY. Recently me and my husband have noticed mite or flea bites on ourselves. We maintain a small flock of birds and now that hard winter is here, they don't have places to dust bath. We think our personal infestation has come from a recent intense coop cleaning and straw replacement. Have you ever been personally infected with chicken mite bites? We will take up your suggestion about installing a dust bath pool in one of our structures. Thanks for you info.

Good info wish I would have found this video earlier. We did deep litter method here in Oklahoma and just realized now our chickens have lice we have 50 birds at least and multiple coops. We dusted coops with DE and will set up better dust bath areas. Looking at getting elector psp to treat them. They free range 3 and half acres most days so concerned about them getting them right back. Also what do with the bedding we pull out of coop? We have bees and other beneficial insects that we want to protect.

01:20 .... that's a handsome rooster. Being a flyfisherman, and a flytyer ... those roosters make my eyes glaze over ~8^) Do you have a peacock .... jest kiddin .... or am I? LOLzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! What about a kiddie pool for a dust bath, or is that overkill? I'm just thinking out loud here ..... I don't own any critterz except a dog myself. I don't have any birds, but have observed many kinds of birds, from sparrows to wild turkeys dusting themselves. Happy New Year to you and your family, plus all your critterz ... take care.
