    In order to have more hard disk space, you must use the Windows 10 CMD command (compact /compactOS)

    About Windows 10 x64.
    Atom CPUs surely supports x64 architecture. The matter is that these sticks has 32-bit UEFI modules. And they cannot start x64 boot.
    You _can_ install ANY version of 64-bit Linux (not only Ubuntu/Debian) just because of internal "hack":
    These Atoms doesnt supports legacy BIOS, only 32-bit UEFI. So, 32-bit UEFI can start only 32-bit bootloader.
    UEFI Grub bootloader starts in 32-bit mode and runs Linux kernel in 32-bit mode
    Linux kernel switches to 64-bit mode during boot when UEFI modules completed initialization and arent needed more.
    And then installation (drivers, libs, etc) fully works in 64-bit mode
    Windows just cant operate this way. Installation contains \efi\boot\bootx64.efi bootloader for x64 installation and \efi\boot\bootx32.efi bootloader for x32 installation.

    You're completely stoned out of your mind if you think this is even remotely practical. You're wasting everyone's time. You CAN (I have) wipe these and put a small Linux distro called Peppermint OS on this and it will function well to run a couple apps. Nothing more than that. These failed on the market for a reason. They were practically unusable. I know whereof I speak about these as I have a dozen of them and have spent a lot of time getting them functional. The stock Linux kills these because of the updates. You cannot shrink Windows 10 32-bit small enough to make this usable since there is only ONE GB of memory on this thing. No Windows version after XP could run very well on that tiny amount of memory and this won't accept XP because of the UEFI only BIOS. The most stripped down version of Windows 10 that you create with NT-Lite needs more memory that what this thing has and there is no way to get around that. What you have succeeded in doing with this endeavor is created a completely unusable curiosity. If you want to actually USE this for anything practical, get Peppermint OS...it's the smallest Linux distro I found that is UEFI-only and it works very well. I tried a dozen before finding that one. No matter how you slice it, Windows on this thing is out of the question...making it possible to install it means zero. It's a waste of time. Get the Intel Compute Stick that has at least 4GB RAM and 32GB of storage if you want to install Windows 10. Don't waste your time with the STCK1A8LFC. It's a nearly worthless computer as it stands. Intel painted themselves into a corner very recklessly when they came out with this and prevented it from using a Legacy BIOS (which would have allowed more reasonable older versions of Windows).

    Let's say I wanted to put an older version of Windows on there. Which BIOS would you recommend using? I saw one that said OS Independent which seemed appropriate. After doing that, my plan is to disable UEFI and Secure Boot and enable Legacy then see if I can DOS boot from a USB stick, or else boot from a ISO containing an older version of Windows (XP or older).

      The latest bios version is v38, I would use that. You won't be able to run Windows XP natively because there are no drivers for the baytrail hardware and Windows XP uses BIOS to boot from, while modern computers use EFI. The compute stick does not have EFI-CSM to support BIOS booting so something like rEFInd will not work. If you want to run Windows XP you would have to use something like VMware Player or KVM to emulate Windows XP. If you are just looking for more storage space, you can try Windows 8.1 or buy a microsd card.

      @@mikehelps6502 See my latest reply. I have learned a lot about these since. The issue is no Legacy BIOS, period. It's UEFI-only. Windows a pure exercise in futility with these. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Especially true in this case. I'm sure you realized that our yourself after doing this video. Total wasted effort.

    Windows 10 is asking for drivers, and won't install until I give them to it. went to Intel's website, and it's not giving me any drivers for STCK1A8LFC. I think it wants wifi drivers to access the internet and use that to finish the windows install. any help?

    Why I could not run continuously! Every time I do an update for BIOS and then the device turns off completely .. And when installing Ubuntu the installation does not complete, it turns off completely ... Likewise with Windows I could not complete the installation, the device turns off completely and every time I press the run button ...
    Have you encountered this problem and have you been able to solve it ??

    I don't mean to bust a bubble but this is going in completely the wrong direction!!! This is a false hope destined for failure. Did you forget on you only have 1GB of RAM and 8GB of eMMC on this? Some of that gets taken up by overhead so you have less than that on both of those numbers. What we should be pushing for on this device is a BIOS mod that allows Legacy BIOS/CSM to be added or unlocked as the case may be. I have offered a $200 bounty toward this on two websites. A MUCH less resource hogging version of Windows would be GREAT on this stick, but not Windows 10...not worth doing at all IMHO.
    Even the stock Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit was a horrible choice and that explains why there's thousands of these on Ebay in the shrink wrap to this day.
    Idiots at Intel made a bad mistake and are not willing to own up to it. Quality of support is HORRIBLE. I had one fill up completely JUST WITH UPDATES and here the knuckleheads at Intel are telling me the obvious, that I can't run anything intensive on it...HELL, I can't run ANYTHING ON IT!!!

    • @mikehelps6502
      @mikehelps6502  Před 5 lety +1

      Using NTLITE you can remove features of x86 Windows 10 LTSB and run a build of Windows 10 that actually runs really well on this device. I'm able to surf the web, open office documents, and play games like the original Halo and Minecraft all for under $35, is about the size of two sticks of gum, and uses very little power. You can't beat that price to performance ratio. These things catch a lot of flak for being next to worthless for their constraints, but you can do a lot with them. My windows build used less ram after boot than the stock Ubuntu 14.04 w/ LXDE and wireless working. It would be cool if someone hacked the firmware to allow 64bit uefi/bios for other os's, but it's honestly not needed. A 64bit OS would add additional storage and memory overhead that would strain the 1gb/8gb even more and would run slower than the x86 support we have now.

      @@mikehelps6502 Hey Mike, did you use the paid version of NTlite to strip down the x86 Windows 10 LTSB release?

    • @stevesybesma
      @stevesybesma Před 4 lety

      @@mikehelps6502 Not enough to be worthwhile. Windows 10 is a hopelessly bloated carcass which NTLite'ing to death doesn't really result in something useful. A smaller Linux distro like Peppermint OS is a far better use for these. You're not living in reality my friend. I have 12 of these and I know better what you're saying is completely false. You impressed yourself and you just want the world to be impressed also, but there are people like me that know better. 1GB of RAM and a tiny 8GB storage space is what you're up against, besides a weak Atom processor. You cannot get around that very low limit. If you took a laptop with those specs it would throw fits and ignorant people would complain after a while about why it's not working anymore...you would tell them what BS?
