  • Unlike traditional bonsai demonstrations, it’s not a race to the finish with this unique tree. Watch as Ryan explores the fundamental structure of a rugged yamadori Sierra Juniper that is sure to be a monumental composition. Held at the 2018 Bonsai Society of Portland Rendezvous.

I've never heard Ryan open up about the rejection he felt after returning to Japan, and then using that as the impetus to forge his own path and create this journey we're now on. Really appreciate you sharing that.

I really appreciate the acknowledgement of the interplay between the photosynthetic dynamic of growth patterns and the influence of environmental forces of the wind. The intelligent application of a strategy that incorporates these in the design makes so much sense.

I just got permission from the forestry service to get my own yamadori rocky mountain juniper tree here in bc. I'm super excited and looking forward to having a tree that's hundreds of years old that I've collected myself. I'm new to bonsai and watching and listening to Ryan has been very insightful and has inspired me to learn and create. Just want to thank you for sharing and letting us learn the finer points of bonsai that very few people will share freely.

Love that explanation about how Ryan busted out of his conventional bonsai thinking... Real, real life and I tend to agree that art form is fluid.. I am happy Ryan brought an American style to the Art... We should have that.

Taiga said in an interview, in Japan as the Oyakata you almost need your apprentice to hate you to get the best out of them. It's total respect towards you Oyakata and under Kimura, you are always an apprentice with him and never on an equal level. He is everything!

He is actually thinking like a tree vs what a human would like the tree to be. This is very helpful. I have been making Bonsai off and on for years but I'm always super self conscious about people watching me or judge what I did. I always feel like the competitiveness and all these rules make this an intimidating hobby to get into.

Amazing story of Master and Apprentice hidden in this video. I wouldn't be surprised if Master Kimura purposely rejected Ryan to force him to be the Master he is today. In many fields, I have often seen the top Apprentice handled the mantle from the Master, but they merely repeat what they learned, instead of going on to push boundaries. Sometimes, creativity and genius comes from pain and suffering. I could imagine Kimura in his final days, writing a letter to his favorite Apprentice.

Ryan, what should the new name for this art/craft be? Maybe moving away from a literal description to also include the other accent plants?
'Culturally significant plants' is what they are to me but might not roll off the tongue. It doesnt mention the container though it would include yamadori and urbandori??? For me this new name idea is a way to conect this wonderful art/craft deeper into a new cultural caretaker... If you will.

I still dont know how people complain to do any of these subjective art forms "right". I mean i like hearing this stuff, but lets be honest, he's teaching and showing us what properties HE finds appealing and what HE likes, its certainly not "correct". He continually talks about making it natural, but that tree looks nothing like a large natural juniper, for example. Again, I love the ideas hes talking about and certainly knows more than me, but this seems more like one of those hobbies you take a little here and a little there until you find out what YOU like, as theres no way it can be done "correct".

I reasently learn an art therm aplyed in bonsai that's called focal point. And in these case the focal point is the complete live vane and dead wood, he left exposed.
